gotta stay sharp!
I am hoping on some suggestions on which variation I should main while I am still learning.

I am fairly new to fighting games, starting with Injustice and only starting to take things seriously in November. I have become pretty good, but still have so far away to go. I mained Lex in IGAU, also Sinestro and Zod and have recently become comfortable with Doomsday.

I am still learning/practicing/getting comfortable with things like armored wakeups and putting pressure on people in a corner, string combos together etc.

I liked Commando, but I rarely get off a parry, so I am thinking Cybernetic or Cutthroat. Is one easier to learn and start out with than the other?
Sounds like cutthroat might be for you, I notice you didn't mention any grapplers so commando is all about grabs, not so much parries.cutthroat combos are pretty short and sweet. With decent setups for extra damage, and decent zoning. Also you have 50/50s so that will help if you have trouble opening people up.

Now that I got my shitposting fix for the day out the way, back to taking TYM seriously.

I recently picked up Kano the other day for two reasons 1) I had originally planned to co-main him when he was revealed 2) I feel like playing Kano for awhile will make me a better fighting game player in the long run since he requires you to outplay your opponent with on point footsies, solid zoning and great spacing to win and doesn't rely on braindead 50/50's and "THETPLAY!"

So, my new fellow Black Dragon brethren, what pointers could you give me to improve my game? What do I absolutely need to know and practice with him in order to maximize his potential? Anything specific about Cybernetic as far as knife chucking to keep my opponent at bay, pressure and whiff punishing? When should I go for the chest pump buff in Cutthroat and what are the most optimal combos I should be doing? Is Commando viable, and if so what are the best ways to utilize his parries and command grabs?

Thanks in advanced, and feed me with as much info as possible mates!

P.S. MK1 skin Kano is godlike.

I mained Lex (I just fell in love with his j3 axe), but I found sinestro just so easy, and I could outspam most deathstroke scrubs with him which is why I started learning him

I wouldn't have thought there was any similarity between him and cyber kano....why do you prefer cyber kano?

Not turned off, I just think it's a little bit too advanced for me at the moment, and I would rather focus on something with a more immediate short term gain. I may switch to commando eventually though.

Yeah I'm not really a grappler. I tend to zone a bit and play defensively, and try and come in on my own terms.

I think I mainly want to be able to deal with scorpions, grandmaster sub zeros and kensihi and quan chi zoning. Would cutthroat be better for this, or cyber?

I saw someone say that cyber is the zoning variation, but how he better at zoning than cutthroat? Cyber also lists grenades, but I couldn't see them anywhere in his movelist :/
Cybernetic Knife toss is the best projectile in the game, it hits mid unlike Cutthroat and it has great recovery. The grenades are the last hits of the strings B13 2+4, B23 2+4 and F3 2+4. There is more emphasis on zoning and space control on in Cybernetic but you aren't going to win buy solely throwing knives all match,so you may want to go Cutthroat since Scorpion is probably Kano's worst match-up at the moment, but the other match-ups don't seem to be that bad.

There's already been a couple of people that've asked about that so if you look through the thread I'm sure you'll find what you need :)

I was hoping somebody would compile everything I need to know into one post because I'm a lazy fuck who doesn't like to read. :(

Cyber I think does better cept for scorpion and kenshi, but if your looking for quick counter for these people your looking in the wrong place. Kano is a easy to pick up hard to master. The characters you named will eat you alive if your not patient, or not on point with your moves.

That makes sense, thank you sir.

I don't want to be purely a zoner, and with two votes for cutthroat, cutthroat it is. How I wish cutthroat wasn't blue, but oh well.

Thank you all for the input, you guys are the best.

edit: specifically for dealing with zoning grandmaster subs, is cyber perhaps better?

Also, since I'm here....sometimes when I do a MB ball...the ball is just kind of hovering and not attacking, and I have no idea how to utilize it. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Use ex ball for extending combos/wake up if they pressuring to much. Ex and then let go. Dont hold it or it will just hover.

Yes, Cybernetic probably is your best bet against GM Sub zero. The ball is hovering because you are holding the buttons, you can actually cancel from the first hit and combo, since the MB ball has armour it's a good way to open people up.

I got you, Bruh.

Pay close attention to the following moves in Cyber:

D4
2,f4
F4
B23

These are your footsie tools. Know them well.

D4: A very + on hit, safe, long range poke. You have a lot of options with this move. On hit, you can run in and use B1 pressure, b31, throw, etc.

On block, you have a lot of options. If you think they will hit a button after a blocked d4, you can link in a knife for a little damage, +frames, and conditioning. Once they stop hitting buttons you can do other things.

If they block a d4, you could check them with f4 depending on your spacing. On hit, you get + frames for pressure or if you're good at hit confirming you get a combo with MB Knives or laser.

F4 is your go-to whiff punisher. Try to dance within it's range and bait unsafe actions. It's safe if blocked and you can cancel into mb knives for pressure or a poke check.

2,F4: An advancing string that you can use at the beginning of the round or at one character space away. The 2 is a high, but is +2 on block and advances him forward. The f4 part of the string is safe, has great pushback on block, and leads to a hard knock down on hit. Use it to create space between you and your opponent, or end combos in the corner with it for set ups. I believe Decay did a video about this.

B23: This move covers a huge amount of space, is hit confirmable to 1+3 or 2+4, and is -4 by itself. The priority on the move is mediocre so you can get hit out of it and it can be jumped. It's best used outside of your opponent's attack range for whiff punishing or to carefully get in once they respect your knife tossing.

I will write more about b13 pressure, b312, and general zoning later. But this should get you started.

Thanks! Like everything in life, it seems so simple now that I understand it.

Interesting, thank you. I think I will still main cutthroat, but will need to be proficient with cyber as well.

I started maining Lex in IGAU which everyone considered a difficult player to master, but I feel that mastering him first made me a better player in the longrun, learning to overcome pressure with a weaker character. Hopefully the same rule will apply here, especially since Kano is no where near as disadvantaged as Lex..
Right haja, and sorry if I come off like a jerk. I don't mean to, I'm just letting you know in case you come back in a week and say like "yall said cyber did well but I'm still losing." Like you said you mained lex, you will do fine.

Both sinestro and kano have really fast mid-hitting projectiles and boyh have really good footsies/space controlling options. also in the neutral they both didnt have good ways of opening people up, which makes both of them very dependent on good spacing to get damage. The obvious difference is that kano doesn't have a meterless vortex like sinestro does

Well I think cyber is now my main variation. I like being able to deal with spammers (yes, I use the word spammer because they are still a problem for me...), and quite like some of his combos, although the animation for many of them seem the same although I note they do different damage. What I mean is at least2, maybe 3 of them seemed to do the same thing..get up close and use the eye laser. I may be doing something wrong, but they just didn't seem that varied?

I also feel that the power up move for cutthroat kano is wasted on me, as I can't utilize it effectively under pressure. I think I'm going to get good with cyber as it lets me maintain my space a bit better, and then will switch to cutthroat when I am at a level I can use him effectively.

I noticed while looking at the move list for both variations, that all of cutthroat kanos variation specific moves were mid. Why then are people saying he has better mixups and 50/50's then other variations? Cyber still has an overhead and good low attacks(or so I thought), so what am I missing?
you're confusing your variations. Cutthroat has 50/50, commando and cyber does not.

MsMiharo

Kuff Bano
I'm not mixing up the variations, I just don't really understand what a 50/50 is, apparently.

I had thought a 50/50 means equally good high and low attacks so the opponent can't be prepared for both and has to guess, or something close to that.

In which case, I don't understand why Cutthroat is the only variation with 50/50s when all the variation specific attacks are mid, and all variations have low and overhead.
where are you finding these overheads? The only overhead Kano has is b1 in Cutthroat.

Kano players, you're doing God's work.

The Kano forums are the last bastion of TYM that hasn't been engulfed with hysteria and disgusting downplaying. I actually learn a lot by checking this forums out, as opposed to most character forums.

Respect.
(But most of what you have read is wrong)

also the buff in Cutthroat is usually used after a Hard knockdown on your opponent or as a combo ender.

edit: Mannimal, you keep sayin stuff like that but I don't see any tech or info comin' from you ;__;
I know and I feel bad about it but I don't have the energy to argue with people who I've seen be completely unwilling to change their opinion. I'll start doing it when I disagree with things now, though. I'm really only talking about a few people

Idk, I think most of us in the Kano forum are just trying to figure out as much shit as possible, any squabbles would most likely be a side effect of not breaking anybody's ribs in too long.

edit: in fact I just a few days ago COMPLETELY changed how I approaching playing Commando kano all together after a bunch of input from a local guy who is much more knowledgeable then me.
