The thing is I get the d-bags declining matches. At least they are trying to accomplish something as shitty as it may be. But it's legit like 65% of the people in lobbies just setting there afk.

Sometimes I'll encounter one of these "lobby rats" who aren't present to accept my challenge.

I'll return to the game a few days later and there they are, the same person with the same amount of wins and losses.

I think up stories about how they died whilst there Xbox lowly hums in the background.

Also, when people with unbelievable W/L ratios finally accept, I often question how they can get out of bed each morning without a tutoria, judging by their play.

Perhaps, but I also ran into a lot of DCs with MK9 when I lived in San Diego. Also, I've had no problem playing plenty of other games online while in the Pacific. I'm curious since I've seen things like in 2013 there was a MK9 tournament in Sydney, Australia. Is no one in Australia able to play online either? With over 4 billion people in the Asia-Pacific region (more than 60% of the world's population) is the whole region completely cut-off from NRS online?

My main concern is MKX. I'm getting a PS4 this month, but I'd only buy a XB1 to play MKX online, probably getting a MKX collectible edition XB1 (assuming there is one). Thus, I don't want to spend $400 on an XB1 if I can't play MKX online. I'll get MKX for PS4 regardless, though playing online would be nice there too.

So MKX is now less than 3 months away, and it's generally agreed that now is the best time to invest into next generation hardware if you don't have a next gen system already.

I have since looked into feedback for the systems in question, being the PS4, Xbox One and PCs, and planned on choosing on a "least cons" basis, that DID look like the PS4, until it was recently brought to my attention that the PS4 version of Injustice is STILL region locked.

Unfortunately, NRS implores a very defeatist attitude of "if nobody calls us out on our programming in a certain area of our games, we'll keep doing it for future games.". So it's extremely likely that by now, NRS have already made their decision concerning the online infrastructure for each version of MKX, and I'll bet my testicles that the PS3/PS4 versions are also region locked. Along with the procedures probably being so thoroughly hard-coded that NRS won't be able to do anything about it post-release, and we'll end up getting the usual cliché of "oh sorry guys, we'll make sure it wont happen in our next game."

Some of you may think "well if it's only happening on Sony systems then Sony needs to step their online game up dawg"... but honestly, since 2009, NRS have literally been the only advocates of doing this within the fighting game genre. Try any other fighting game on PS3 and you'll be able to play anyone, wherever your curiosities bound you. On top of personally having played people from the West Coast in Tekken Tag 2 and having a smoother experience than I would playing MK9 with people 4 hours away in my own country on the same system.

Others may think "well damn straight I aint playin no laggy sets with some jabronies from some 3rd world countries"... unfortunately that's not quite how region locking works. It's divided into NTSC and PAL territories. And this is where it becomes apparent how truly redundant region locking really is.

Europe is a PAL region.
North America is a NTSC region.

Sounds simple enough right?

...... the short answer is no.

Most countries in western Africa are PAL regions.
Most countries in the Middle East are PAL regions.

......Oceania is.... a fucking..... PAL..... region.

The fact that I am forbidden from playing New Yorkers in NRS games but I'm supposed to welcome New Zealanders with open arms? It does not compute. It is not economic. It does not make any God-damned sense.

For anyone who joined TYM for Injustice exclusively, there are also several shady offline game mechanics from MK9 that you may still be dealing with now if we had not amassed a big enough community to decipher the lesser known properties of MK9 (I won't go into detail here for the sake of staying on topic). It's only because based Gods like Somberness (God salute him wherever he is) webreg, among others, that did enough research on straight up outrageous programming ethics that the cheeks of NRS's programming team were coloured beetroot-purple with embarrassment that they decided to change their ways with Injustice.

If any NRS personnel are reading this, I'll give the benefit of the doubt and acknowledge that maybe there is something in Sony Computer Entertainment's legislation that prevents you from carrying your vision as you do on other platforms, or that you're trying to do everything to smokescreen that you might potentially have done..... nothing..... to remedy the quality of the netcode you implore, but I would've thought you would have the decency to provide a boundless experience for people who are investing several hundreds (even thousands in some economies) of dollars to support your new product.

And don't bother saying that it's still being released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the build for those systems has still not seen the light of the day publicly and everyone with a brain knows those versions will be a massive sack of shit.

TL;DR - IDK if anyone else feels this way, but I don't know how to grin and bear an investment approximately equivalent to $650 USD being single-handedly flushed down the toilet by some absurdly useless feature. /rant over

region lock is necessary because dumb ppl in the US dont realise you cant connect to places like australia without lagging out to the max. happened in mk9, will happen in mkx. places like australia need their own region due to our isolation. with fighting games we can only really connect with asia without it being p laggy.

yes there are exceptions to the rule congratulations you connected successfully, vast majority do not though

mk9 example, host lobby "Australia Only" i might collect like 3 other aussies then US ppl try joining out games and rooms and it breaks everything up because its not a decent consistent connection. ppl do not listen they just continually ruin KOTHs and then actually blame us aussies in our own room for being laggy. honestly

For the record you do realize both the 360 and PC versions of MK9 and Injustice were region free right? NRS are obviously cutting corners when it comes to having to deal with Sony's infrastructure.

And again, this does not make sense for Europe, we're closer to the US than Oceania no matter what metric you try to slice it by lol.

The answer is region lock is helpful to some nations but not others.

Being from Indiana, I hate connecting with anyone outside the USA except Canada. Even playing west coasters can be rough. I would not mind a region lock at all. But I can understand the OPs argument.

I play on the 360 and every time I lag out and disconnect I go to the persons profile to see where they are from. nine times out of ten, its because I was playing someone from another continent. Russia, Italy, and the UK are the absolute worst to play for me...which I see a lot of since I play very late at night because of my job.

@ Imakeitlookcool:few things. A. Says who? We dont know yet and B. What does tournament preferred console have to do with better and more options regarding netplay? Regardlesd if ps4 is the tourney choice or not, xbox factually is better online. Plays better, no region lock and last mk game played smoother on the 360 if im not mistaken. Just saying...

Other games handle this by simply adding a region filter and lock. Why can't MK just do the same.

Better yet, use GGPO netcode so cross oceanic netplay isn't an issue.

If this had anything to do with..... anything, we should all be playing MVC games on a Dreamcast still.

Factually, this has not been the case since the original Xbox vs the PS2. The PS2 didn't even have a dedicated online infrastructure. The whole "well it's better cus you pay for it" fallacy is about as significant as the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis having "blast processing" or whatever it was. It's all just marketing buzz essentially.

Just keep upgrading the training mode and it's all good. Who wants to play in laggy kross-kountry matches anyway?
In the grand scheme of things, I agree, but it's still nice to get some sets in with guys across the pond without zig-zagging out of hotel rooms during EVO weekend every year. :p

Yeah. For me I just play whoever I kan offline when I see them. Playing online for me is almost like not playing the person at all since I kan't do so many useful things like instant airs on reaction, backdashes, fuzzy guarding, reacting to 50/50's, other defensive options, set ups, etc.

With Arrow it took so much of my game away and with Martian it just made it a game of when to teleport, no set ups, no reactions, just orbs and teleport.

And in MK9... Let's not talk about that.

Sadly, Google Fiber hasn't made it's way all across the world. When that happens, region lock will no longer be a thing. Until then, Russia will have shitty internet, Australia will be forced to play with Australians and Non-Americans will only be able to prove themselves by traveling. It's a major inconvenience but even if they didn't have region lock, it'll just be a bunch of losses on your record because disconnecting.

I think it's good for people in the United States but bad for everyone, everywhere else. It's a sad reality.

i came from xbox360 to ps4 and region lock was always my nightmare.

but i have made only positive experiences with it. always good connections (havent really experienced any bad) but still a good amount of competition (if you count the unplayable connections from the unlocked version out, it seems like even more than before).

a solution could be that you get the option to invite americans to private matches, while lobbies and matchmaking stay region-locked.

It's basically shipping 2 games at the same price, but one doesn't have as much stuff on it.

I'll be so pissed if it's region locked. It's not like people are forcing you too play on bad connections.

Here... I am a god!
Region Lock is stupid and limits the player's experience for no good reason. That's why I'm getting the game on both X1 and PS4, so I can at least play people from the US on my X1.
