That runjab style of UMK3 play is unwatchable, in my opinion.
It is for most people. The main reason is lack of understanding. You don't realize the level of skill involved or how hard you have to train to get to that level. Mind games are also something that go largely unnoticed, which is the main meta game of UMK3 AND MKT. If you do not understand these things and why each player is doing certain and often subtle things, it will look extremely boring. Even for experienced players who do not use or fully grasp the jabs, they also view it in the same light. It's the main reason UMK3 has died off, and it's really a shame.
The N64 version is fun as hell to watch, though. Love it.It's INCREDIBLY interesting watching things like this that I NEVER would have noticed as a kid. I had the N64 version and although it seemed a bit faster to me, I never knew the extent of the differences. I'm looking forward to more of this stuff in relation to MKT on N64, especially the specific character differences. For example, things that are possible with Classic Sub Zero on N64 because of him having both unmasked and classic moves.
Fortunately, we have N64 MKT. It never really got the respect or attention it deserved here in the American tournament scene. And since the block jabs weren't a big problem back in the day, there was no reason to play MKT, especially since it was considered to be a broken piece of crap. Propaganda prevented MKT from ever getting traction, and like I said, it wasn't even needed since we had UMK3. But now, the block jabs for most people, are a big problem. These very same block jabs are in N64 MKT. However, they're far easier to beat, get around, avoid, and strategize against in MKT, as is shown in the video. There's also so much more things you can do that are not shown in the video, so the options are there.
What this does is allow more depth. With every character able to use most of their tools, it allows the game to evolve and develop. There's also great balance. Nearly every character can compete, and there's not that many terrible match-ups.
And this is all in regards to 1v1 play. The level of strategy and depth added in 3v3 makes the game even better and more hype. Building a strong team that complements each other is another part of strategy. And you also don't start the every round with the same character. Round 1 is your 1st character, round 2 is your 2nd, and if you get to round 3, it's your 3rd character first.
Not to mention that N64 MKT takes more skill than UMK3. This is just my personal opinion. But everything is much faster in MKT, which means your reactions need to be much faster. You have to think quickly and come up with a strategy very quickly or before you know it, all of your characters will be dead. Also, execution is so much more important in N64 MKT. You need to do as much damage as possible or put them in a position you want.
I could go on and on, but you get the point. N64 MKT is by far the best MK game for so many different reasons. I'm glad people are finally beginning to realize it here in the USA!
