"Prepare to be Astounded!" - Zatanna General Discussion Thread

I know it has only been a day but how is everyone playing Zatanna right now? Like what space do you want be in because I feel like she has a really weak footsie game, mediocre zoning, and a tough time with rushdown heavy characters.

I just don't know what it is but I just can't seem to get anything started with her.

Also how has everyone been using her trait. I feel like it is only really valuable in very few select matches.

I know it's kinda dumb saying stuff like what she is good and bad at on day one but man I need to vent because I got my ass kicked so hard using Zatanna, lol.

How are you guys switching stances with her? They must have deliberately made it so you cannot continue a combo after switching stances. Even if you trait right after MB Trance, any move in trait will not continue the combo. The best way I have incorporated trait is cancelling into it after 223 at the end of a combo. That way you get a meaty fireball when they wakeup. Also, absorb does ridiculous meter building (like 3-4 absorbs and you build a bar) so trait may be more viable against a Batman or Superman.

EDIT: Alright you can d2 into trait to continue the combo. I really think trait can be REALLY good in some matchups.

Its not really tech per say but does the camera go crazy and put the opponent off-screen when you grab them and get knocked out of your grab by her mb flame ball? maybe free trait? thoughs?

Stuff I found while in the lab for 5 hours today

-Her trait she has a move called lightning rod (aka db1) that has a frame of armor on startup. This hit of armor is similar to Lex Luthor's lv1 armor where she will take in all of the damage but not flinch (allowing her to stay in her trait).

-While Zatanna is in her trait, whenever she cancels one of her normals into teleport she reverts back to her original stance. This allows Zatanna to combo from her trait into her normal stance via mb teleport.

-The sample combo I found was (start in trait) 2 xx magic pillar, 2 xx mb

-She has a glitch in her trait that makes her spend two meters to cancel into b3/f3 via ffmb/bbmb even though nothing will come out.

-Her absorb in trait is ridiculous as the move can absorb projectiles the frame that it is active and a few frames afterwards.

Overall Zantanna feels like a character that can do a little bit of everything. She kinda reminds me of a crossbread between Juri and Rose from Street Fighter. I'll be posting more zoning setups tomorrow. Hopefully those that read this wall of text got some tech out of it.

Btw please stop sleeping on her trait. It is amazing. I'll be posting a thread about it tomorrow. Sadly I don't have equipment to record a quality video, but I'll try something!!

Not against Black Adam, Nightwing, or Aquaman though...
Against Black Adam and Nightwing I can see your point. As for Aquaman, I sort of agree with you. I feel like trait is useful against Aquaman with a life lead. You can use lightining rod whenever he does from the deep and then start zoning again.

I'm having more success playing super lame. Just teleing full screen and chucking shit. I'll usually go into wand stance after I hit a MB ring and go right for a low wand shot thing. Her zoning is ridiculous in that stance. The attacks come out so fast they have a hard time hitting you out of it. Plus you shut down all jump ins with the Lightning Rod move. Untill they fix the bug where BF3 actually reverses inputs im ending my non-vortex combos with F211 and going right into wand stance.

Also, her normal stance zoning with her rings isn't as good as we all thought :/ It basically goes like this: you throw a ring, the opponent blocks it. You throw another, and it trades with Aquaman, Nightwing, Black Adam, anyone who can hit fullscreen or most of the screen..

I have some tech that might be able to combat Aquaman. I'll post the results tomorrow.

Trait can be used as an offensive tool. Cancelling her 2 trait normal into fireball leaves her at +5 with little to no physical push block on the character! Unless they waste a meter and push block, it is a frame trap with ridiculous chip. Ending a combo with MB Trance gives you enough time to switch to trait and for some reason you cannot continue the combo so you can just keep 2 xx df1, 2 xx df1, rinse and repeat until they decide they want to get hit or suffer 60% chip.

EDIT: Push block knocks you out of your trait but there are short combos you can perform at the beginning of the match that will not allow them to build 1 bar so they cannot have the ability to push block.

EDIT 2: Also, don't even get me started with how much meter this builds. Even if they decide to get hit after 1 rep, the 1 fireball will give you enough to make the combo meter neutral.

EDIT 3: IMPORTANT - Apparently it only works on Superman and Wonder Woman.

EDIT 4: I did not test it thoroughly and some reversals beat out 2 xx df1, 2 but get stuffed by 2 xx df1, 1. This tech may not be completely dead against bigger hitbox characters but it definitely needs more testing and research before anything can be set in stone. If anyone else would like to tinker with the idea I would love the help.

EDIT 5 (I'M DONE NOW I PROMISE):
When I was testing on Superman, trait 2 into fireball does not give ANY push back and I can do it midscreen forever. When I try it on any other character, there is pushback and will wiff by the 3 rep. Apparently Superman has differently block properties than the rest of the cast and caused me to waste a bunch of time getting my hopes up due to a bug in the game. Netherream needs to fix their game lol.

This bug isn't just with Superman! Wonder Woman also has no pushback on trait 2 xx fireball and this string can be done continuously midscreen on her too. These are the only 2 (out of about 20 that I have tested) that do this. So strange.

wow this is like the greatest corner trap ever if you can get them to start blocking, they HAVE to push block at that point. I'm honestly ok with my opponent spending a bar of meter to get me out of trait for 5 seconds lol

Exactly, just teleport backwards and you are back to full screen zoning. You can also do this trick midscreen since both 2 and df1 do not push the opponent back at all.

Lol all the ideas I am having are being tested before I get home from vacation to test it. First the infinite and now the trait loop! Oh well, good to see there are other people with innovation out there!

That can be ducked after the 2. I just tried that online and got punished hard :(
