Virtual Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown Discussion Thread

Having a wired connection doesn't help if the other person is on WiFi. It can still increase the input delay the game applies and make the game feel sluggish.
From what I have read here, the posts were not talking about people being on wifi or the like apart from NeroOps. The point was that the the chosen netcode for this game is not good enough. I think most people know this about trying to do the best for your own connection hence why I said in my last post:
There is definitely some problems with the online especially with one sided lag (I cannot play one of my friends because of this) or delay but you would expect most people on here or amongst friends who are pretty serious about fighting games in general to be wired.

No wonder you're such a stickler for netcode, you must be absolutely no fun in person.
Never mind that most players will get the majority of their PvP via netplay, but I care about netplay quality because I’m ”absolutely no fun in person.”

A follow up to my post about Google servers. It does seem that these are being used for the online mode of this game so like I mentioned before some parts of the world are going to experience problems like longer matchmaking, worse quality matches and delay. Parts of the world which are likely to include Africa, the middle east and Russia will suffer.

Instead of the promotional netcode stories we got from US to Europe etc. What they should have been testing was the countries without these relays and finding some sort of solution to that.

@Marlow I know this is about VF5 but do you think/know if they will do an updated remake of Fighters Megamix? I have not played that since the Saturn days but for some reason I remember really loving that game! But i was young then. I think an upgraded remake of that would be cool. I still haven't had the chance to play VF5 but i still plan on trying it out once I get time. I'm not good with keeping up on SEGA. all I hear of it seems is Sonic news.

I have never seen such a good side when it comes to in-depth infos for a fighting game.
(basics, movelist (framedata, notes etc.), combos, guides and all that is very easy to navigate through.)
I was playing around with vf last night and I couldnt get these combos to work. The notation kinda threw me off a bit and I tried to find an explanation but some of the notations arent well explained. Any idea what the black direction arrows mean? like one combo said :l:rP:rP and the second:rwas black. Also what is open/closed stance? Game is pretty fun so far but all these rules like "combo works on these characters in closed stance only, these characters in all situation ,these characters in both stances but only on counter hit, these characters only in closed stance and recovery hit" seems overly tedious.

Also according to the training mode information like 90% of my character's strings are - on hit. Even a string that is high high high is like -4 this is weird to my tekken brain lol.

Everything is -on hit in VF lol, like seriously beside obvious stuff there is no hard pressure in this game and mashing gets you destroyed. It's mostly spacing / whiff punishing which i love and missed for quite some time.

Yeah combos change on the weight of your opponent, in the right column you can see what works against who.
The black arrow means you have to hold the direction for a split second, you can also do it while in recovery or in block tho.
Open means your chest is to the camera, close means your back is to the camera (really weird compared to tekken, i know)
Yes this game is crazy on knowledge check, more than tekken with all the properties you have to watch out for combos.
General rule, every low attack is minus on hit and a string that is not finished too

Ya coming from tekken the low attacks being minus on hit is nothing new. But I was messing around with Lau and every string/poke I tried was - except 5P. Makes me wonder what you are supposed to do if you land a string on someone then they are + and in your face. Guess I have a lot to learn if gonna give this game a shot. Obviously lot different than tekken.

I've been watching some of JuiceBox's stream lately. He actually started going hard on VF5 about 8 months ago and has been answering some of the same questions a lot over the last few days about the kind of situations the game puts you in. It might be worth pulling up his VOD's and seeing some of what has been talked about.

He gets into stuff about where the meta eventually lands and last night was going into why nitaku 50/50 situations exist. Stuff like that.

I phreaking LOVE fighters Megamix. That's actually the one fighting game I remember spending time on growing up, before never touching fighting games every again until 2014. I highly doubt they'd ever do a re-make of it, though. VF is niche enough, and there might not even be a VF6, which I would assume would be the next natural game.

oh no, the netcode is bad... like, scary bad but oh my god does it feel good to be back. If anyone wants to play, I'm trufenix on PSN. I'll be keeping it installed a while at least until I get tired of sending people to splash mountain.

What if I told you most players don't give a shit about PvP or netplay? Or do you really think people like YOU are who fighting games are made for?

Honestly, the feeling i've gotten from this game more than anythign is that I wish this had some vipers in it. Fighting games are finally ready for all the wall and weapon shenanigans that game tried.

okay, why did they do the titles like this?

Shoutouts to the NRS ui team. You can always tell which developers actually PLAY their games.

Netcode is the heart of any competitive fighting game, period.
Okay.....I understand wanting good netcode to be standard but this statement is completely false. It doesn't matter to some people how good the netcode is on a fighter if the game is shit. If mk11 had zero lag in all matches and a wifi filter, people who hate the game aren't gonna say it's the best fighter ever.

No one is saying you can't give constructive criticism. I believe people (not you in particular) have forgotten what that even means. They just shit on a game and call it "constructive criticism". It's statements like these that label you a complainer.

Completely false? Maybe in your eyes it's just the half-truth.
I like VF but I quit playing because of the netcode, so no it can't be complete false, else I would still play. (I will revisit on updates tho) Why would I even have bought the DLC? Guess Maximilian is also a complainer than and is completely false in what he said ... as he basically said what I said but more through a "flower" ...

On the other hand, you are right, if the gameplay is terrible (taste), great netcode can't help it.
(but there is no taste for good netcode, either its good (state of technology) or it's not)

Sorry but for some (if not the most) online is the way to play fighting games on a "competitive" level these days. If you have a great local scene, sure you can ignore netcode but the way they build up on VF5US, you feel its made to be a "true" online game and here is the netcode the heart, imho.

If you have fun with it and don't feel any issue, cool for you, really. Enjoy it.
(I will always follow: "No feedback (or "complaints" for most cry babies) no change ever!")

PS: I actually think I do "constructive criticism" else I would just say, fuck sega you are trash ... or something like that.

This I 100 percent agree with. But this is different than saying "Netcode is the heart of any competitive fighting game, period".

Like I said in my post before, no one is saying you can't give constructive criticism. You should always give feedback. I was only referring to that one statement in your post.

I'm going to presume I'm a tad older than you cuz I was a teen when Fighters Megamix was out. lol. but actually VF was a really big deal from what I recall when it was out. It just got a bit taken over by Tekken and Soul Edge/Soul Calibur. I think if SEGA utilized it's properties more like they do with Sonic they could be pretty big. A lot of what I remember too was there games were really kinda short. Fighters Megamix was one of the games where they really started to take a look at games with a large roster and going crazy. Capcom also sorta did the same thing with MvC2, but I digress. I think this is one reason why I was a bit bummed with MK11's starting roster. The roster we have now or at least most of it should have been ready to go from the beginning.

I've been lucky enough to play a lot of good quality connections. I've gotten Taka up to Hunter and El Blaze and Goh were deep into the Dan ranks. I'm really enjoying it, more than I enjoy Tekken right now. It just sucks that my experience isn't everyone else's.

I do however wish there could be discussions about this game that aren't about the package of its re-release.

What would you like to talk about? I'm a 4th Kyu Jeffrey player. Probably still with him for a while then move back to hawk when I understand grabs again.

So far I've only had time to go back in and start learning the moves again, and start working on some basic combos. I'm planning on maining Jeffry, and then eventually moving on to Lei Fei.

Well how's everyone's learning experience going?

I just hit Hunter with Taka. Guy's a big scrub killer for sure. If you know how frame data and throws work in this game and they don't you can legit just try to launcher through anything on hit. Then when people start stepping, you throw em around

I've played a few people who really fucked me up tho. A Shun player named Blackmore and some Jeffry player who had a 91% win rate. The gap in knowledge was very apparent.

I'm interested in playing El Blaze and Goh again, but I'm sure I'll miss that 15 frame safe launcher lol.

For me this game now feels a lot more intuitive than Tekken ever did. I'm really enjoying it

Also helps that some combos simply don't work on him, so unless the opponent knows the matchup and has memorized their character specific combos you can avoid some damage.

Definitely true, but he has to take more damage and hold more pressure in other ways. The big ones are that certain strings are natural combos on him, he takes longer to get up so he's easy to OTG, and apparently cant evade/fuzzy until a frame later than everyone else. The latter I cant find in any of the guides, but Tricky said it and I tested it and it's true. I'd like to think everyone at low level just learns universal combos
