Can I add you Skkra? Could you make time to beat up on a green horn with a mic?
Sure. I have a mic too, so I could give you a bunch of advice. You were on my list but to be honest I removed you (and a lot of others) when I dropped MK9. I'll very likely be on on Saturday afternoon some time. Maybe a few minutes tonight but it'd just be to mess around with Bruce or something for a few minutes before football.

Pre-fight advice: Hit the Zaibatsu forums for your characters of choice and try and get a BnB juggle or two down cold.

Random side thought: can you guys imagine how good the MK community could've been if MK9 had had online as good at TTT2? I loved MK9 but my Ermac was relegated to perma-scrubtown because the online was a complete joke, and I'm too busy to constantly attend offline sessions just to practice. In TTT2 I can actually get REAL practice from my house whenever I have a free 30-60 minutes. Makes me so sad for MK9. =(

I agree completely. as much as online in general gets shit on, if its legit like TTT2 and VF5FS....people will level up like crazy. MK9 coulda been a whole nother beast.....

Yeah, I think I actually could've been really good at that game if the online had been tight. I loved to play, and LOVED Ermac, but without being able to play online, on my own schedule... that was it for me.

I still don't have enough time to really be "good" at TTT2 like I was at T5, where I knew how to fight every character, knew frame data on every move and how to punish it... just too busy now that I'm older. But at least I can actually have REAL matches in TTT2. Hell, I can break throws on reaction in this game, thats how good the online is.

Man, makes me so sad/angry, such squandered potential in a great game in MK9... the high-level community could've been so much bigger...

I'll take you on brah. Lemme guess your team based on what I know about you... you need a serious character and some semi-troll... maybe a jack...

Lets say Jack6/Nina?

I'd like some input on my character choice in regards to training tactics from you guys, if possible. So, to start off with, my mobility is beyond horrible. To make up for this I've been using slim bob as his roll helps me get away from and into my opponent when need be. Do you think this is going to hurt me in the long run because I'm not practicing my foundations like i should be, or do you think over time my habits will adjust because the roll itself isn't as reliable as basic movements, as well as limiting a lot of my options of attack strings when rolling in? Basically, is Bobs roll nearly as good as it seems, or do most people not have the talent to punish it yet?

I've also been using Bryan. He seems to work best in whiff punishment, but like i said my mobility is terrible and that translates into a major lack of ability to create whiff punishing opportunities. Instead I use mk like strings leading into a launcher of my choice. Usually his df sweep or roll back kick. Do you think i should put him aside for a later date and work with someone who better suits my mk style and if so who? Or does Bryan have the potential to be an offensive string player?

I'd say I'm at about an average casual player level right now. Win some lose more. Could i change that with simply a different selection of characters based on what I've told you, or do you think leveling up what I'm working with now is a better option? I realize without playing me its almost impossible to see where I'm struggling so i don't expect advice to change me overnight, but any help that you could give would be appreciated.

Picking up a Mishima (Heihachi/Kazuya/Devil Jin) character will help you improve your execution with everything. Being able to pull off EWGF's and repeated wavedashes with a Mishima is going to help you to be able to backdash-cancel faster too. Playing Heihachi has leveled me up not just as a new Tekken player, but as a fighting game player in general. The Mishimas are hard to use, they have no braindead semi-safe super fast mids or long range crush moves, fast crushing launchers with ridiculous range and other EZ-mode BS like some of the newer characters in the series *cough* Lars, Alisa *cough*. I have played Bob a bit myself and good players will definitely hop kick you if you roll at them. Just pair Bryan with a balanced character or an offensive character and you have yourself a good team, Bryan/Bob should work just fine. Bob has a Mishima-style crouchdash which is infinitely better than his spinner ball for forward movement and offensive mixups.

I have been wondering about my character choices myself, but I have decided to run 2 teams: Bryan/Heihachi and Bruce/Jinpachi. I have also been messing with Bob/Kazuya/Jin in training too see if they would suit my style better, which is essentially defensive.

I'm no Tekken veteran myself, but it goes without saying you should work on getting movement down. Backdash canceling isn't as hard as it seems; in fact is one of the few accesible high level techs. Practice backdash cancelling and sidestepping. Those 2 are the cornerstones of current generation Tekken's metagame.

Using Bob's move is good to a point: it helps cover up for your weakness. What you should be doing is start practicing movement inside and out of matches. Do your hardest to use Bob's roll only when you're in panic or in an uncomfortable situation.

As for a character with strong strings, you'll likely have to pick up a female or a capo. IMO those character have a better fit with the playstyle you're describing.

But we'll see if you make me play my main team :p

Imma head on PSN now. Send me an invite.
I work M-F 8:30-6:00, boy! By the time I get home and maybe have time to hop on, it's minimum 8:00 PM.

I should be on for a bit on Saturday afternoon I think. Hopefully I'll catch you. I've never fought Ogre (fuck this ANCIENT OGRE shit, it's fucking OGRE and TRUE OGRE) before so you'll need to give me a bunch of matches to get destroyed while I try and absorb his strings.

I could've stopped reading here.

This game IS movement. You don't need to be able to move like a Korean, but you should be comfortable with midrange dancing around, and very simple backdash canceling. bb~d~bb~d~bb~d etc. Do that as fast as you can until you're moving around decently. Try bb~d~ff~u over and over. You need to be able to dance around comfortably right outside of poke range at a bare minimum.

So, is the technique for backdash canceling a matter of preferance? MYK on some of the levelupyourgame-videos instructed that the correct way is to do bb-db-b-db-b-db-b... I personally find this technique slightly harder than bb-d-bb-d-bb-d-bb... but I can input the bb-db-b-db-b... method easier now and I believe it to be the superior technique due to increased speed and less strain on the thumb (I play with a pad).

bb-db-b-db-b-db-b is the "proper" way to do it... it's the way that, when done super fast, is a korean backdash.

If you're not super worried about winning Evo and are just trying to have fun and play, bb-d-bb-d-bb-d is quite adequate. You may also try doing bb~qcb,b very quickly, you'll notice you get the same result pretty much and it will feel more natural.

Well I decided to play Heihachi because he is so fkn boss and I want to be able to execute him correctly with different EWGF-versions, repeated wavedashes, his "broken toy"-throw and all that so I want to be good and play the game properly and I like the challenge. In my opinion every Tekken player needs to play at least one Mishima.

Get into the habit of doing the actual KBDC. It's actually not super difficult once you understand exactly how you have to do the input. On pad, you have to position your thumb at the edge of the direction so that you will barely touch the down direction when going to d/b. On stick, you have to use the start of your fingers to push the stick down. There should be videos on YouTube that show you what to do.

its one of those things where... its hard until it isn't.
I still personally think its hard to do... i sometimes will ge tit... and sometimes i'll just backdash duck. That rhythm just hasn't been found yet.

It doesn't have to be fast at all actually. I thought it was hard until I learned exactly how to do it through a video. It hasn't been hard since. I told my brother how to do it over the phone, and he started doing it and went "OH SHIT WTF" lol.

It's easy once you visually see how your hand is supposed to move.

I spent the better part of yesterday practicing EWGF for the first time with Heihachi and decided to apply the technique I used, slightly modified, to backdash cancelling and the cancel animation is almost non-existent, I tried to do it in an actual match and was able to backdash quickly enough to induce whiffs and block/defend without getting hit during the cancel.

If you can do a basic EWGF as Heihachi or Devil Jin (without dashes or sidesteps) it well help you with your movement too.

NO but that one I'm trying to make. I'm not too worried about the MK thing. I love Tekken. I always feel like I am getting better... where I felt like hit a wall in MK.
