Guys this is a tier list and its an opinion. Stop trying to argue with absolutes when they don't exist.
I also think fisticuffs is a solid variation. My opinion. He has excellent stagger pressure like a-list and great chip and ex nut punch is on of the best reversals in the game. Lucky for fisticuffs, cage as a base is good, and has good offensive pressure in MKXL.
A-list is supposed to be S tier in most players books but our A-list players at tournaments must suck because we can't hit top 8. Kano is in the same position. Is it the players representing them being bad? Is it the characters themselves?
My personal opinion is that unwhiffable multi-mid hitting strings that lead to mix-ups mid string are the best characters for tournaments. Its easy to do, it relies on your opponent to guess right and requires extremely low execution. Hell tremor is good, could you imagine if f1 was mid and was 9fs and he had a 6 frame d1, Take a seat Kotal.
Scar gets ALOT of mileage out of sonyas long mid attack into grenade and its his spacing on this that makes him one of the best demo sonyas.
Characters with D1s that are 6 frames, catch jumping opponents and can lead to conversions (especially in the corner) are also strong characters. It gives a bit of defense without the use of armor. I believe jason without his D1 and its strength would be alot weaker.
Safe armor with pushback or plus on block pressure. This is one of the reasons why ermac had such a good showing. Big D played out of his mind and with his great defence being able to stop jump ins or pressure with safe armor won him so many games.
Air game. The highest placing characters at either all had broken jump ins usually full screen or with combination of this are able to cancel into a special (divekick, tail-flip)
All or most of the above make an S-tier characters in MKXL tournaments with ease. Gunslinger is a special case, I think its S-tier, I know most don't but his options in the neutral are beyond most other characters, armored half-screen ultimate tackles are OP!
If your character doesn't have the above it doesn't mean its bad, it just means the neutral is harder and opening your opponent up requires you to make the better reads and spacing which just isn't as braindead.
