I personally enjoy this game a lot more than all other MKs from NRS. I got my money's worth by now, except maybe chaos which would have been ok for 30$. Too bad it'll die ouț after kp2. I hope if they don't release anything else major, at least more skins/bundles, I'd buy some more, and continue to patch it so we dont end up with a Fujin/Jaqui situation. Chaos was straight up shit tbh, the story, the big bad, the robots. Hoping that pro-komp has a half million dolars prize pool, then it'll prolong the game's life a little more, sneak in some more skins and kameos and it'll be fine. But my biggest hope is they keep balancing it and adding gameplay relatef stuff. Shao needs a mid ma'boon.

Is anyone happy this game flopped?

This game (IMO) felt like just an abandonment of anything I liked about MK. Years down the road when we get another MK and hopefully they have learned LOTS of lessons we can all look back and say, “remember MK1? Yeah that was a low point for the series”.

I know that’s not how everyone here feels and to those I apologize, but yeah I hated this game. Just wondering if anyone else felt this way?

Less than 100h played since launch, says a lot.
But the game is finallty in version 0.8 now, which is where it should be at least on release, definitely won't get anything online, but will casually play offline free from the stress of competitive scene, if there was ever a thing for this game.

MK1 is the best MK period.
It felt empty soulless. Mk1 felt off from the jump.

I hope they go back to the mk11 (VISUALLY) look and presentation of characters in that game was beautiful to look at.

I remember how well triborg Sektor and cyrax looked in mk11. Their MKX moves looks gorgeous in mk11.

Why can't they just give MKX a makeover with the visual brush of mk11 and build from that point onwards?

This alone proves they can but they don't. Majority of the fanbase wants this and thought this was the case when mk11 was revealed.

Happy? No. Why would I be happy a game in a franchise I love flopped? That's some spiteful shit with no thought to the consequences of future titles (or potential lack thereof).

Shocked? Also no. Kameos were a HARD sell for the casual audience, poisoned the more dedicated audience out the gate with Kopter Kombat into Hat Kombat into Grenade Kombat, and an immediate eyeroll as the newest iteration on variations. At the same time, this is an interesting, decently balanced fighting game coming off the heels of MK11 and MKX which were both heinous disasters for balance; yet it's also always been an abysmal product. I liked MK1, but hot damn was release clearly a year+ early. Lack of features, lots of errors in movelists, multiple reworks of the singleplayer mode needed until it was basically scrapped in favor of towers, rushed story clearly designed for DLC expansion, one thing in the Shrine at a time, all of 3 or 4 kameo costumes on release, no online training, no queuing while training, no online lobbies -- objectively speaking, MK1 is a barebones product. Fun, but barebones.

Cheers to a year and a half at most of MK1 I guess. Let's see what weird take NRS can have on variations next.

WB heads themselves have already said that MK is a franchise they want to focus on so me saying I wanted this particular game to flop is not wishing death on the series. MK as a brand is valuable and has fans, but MK1 was just a failure in a lot of ways imo.

It feels validating to finally see what I’ve known to be true. MK1 in general should be glad it had the name mortal kombat to ride off of and even if you hate MK11 that game gave this one an early boost. MK1 would have flopped all together if it wasn’t for those 2.

What does this mean exactly? Even if the leak is true, It’s not like the game is suddenly going to stop being played or anything.
What it says? Turns out playing with the mindset of "wow new tech" vs "jesus they fucked up again" affects things.

thank goodness. this game needs to go. NRS needs to go. Everything from the top bottom needs to be thrown out and refreshed. at the very least, whoever is in charge of gameplay direction needs to go. Ed probably should retire like Ono did. It's INCREDIBLE that this franchise needs another MK9 reboot already. Twice now they've needed this. Twice. That's...something.

Maybe if you think you need NRS to keep your game alive for you ¯\(ツ)

Xombat here is perfectly describing why I never even gave this game a chance in becoming "good".
The Meta is trash and when you chase competitive gaming, you want to reach that "trash", no thanks.
---
I personally still play it because of brutals, besides that, I would have stopped awhile ago.
  • Invasions is trash (you don't really learn the game but bad habits, (full armor cpu, trash gimmicks interrupting the gameplay, trash talisman design (fart to victory meta, really?), awful elemental stats, sometime you win fast sometimes it's a torture ...))
  • towers of time has to long loading times, turns me off, even here cpu armor and gimmicks killing this mode on top for me, ... (remember ps5 advertised ssd power @NRS ... let me skip the fucking tower animations. I feel like in MK2 snes 1993 it was faster, is it by design, to keep us longer ingame? Playtime stats, for your greedy boss? ...)
  • online experience is trash (nothing to do, only staring at a screen, declining wifi scrubs, no separated ranks, ...)
  • story done in few hours (not a factor to keep you in)
  • Extra point, people play Tekken8 as a "fashion" game, in MK1 customization is trash, a design to hunt 95% ugly palettes, ...
Take this as feedback, not as "hate" ... I want MK to be better and more fun ...
(even tho I personally really think, there is a "force" purposely hurting MKs brand ...)

Why are you trying to imprint meaning that isn't there? It is literally just that I have been fucking swamped with work and real life and would have enjoyed playing slightly more if it wasn't under the "ugh..yeah they fucked up" umbrella of recent news. Chill

So when I asked “what does this mean?”, was I supposed to just somehow intuitively know all of this?

The people shitting on the meta are so weird to me, because every fighting game ever has a defined meta at the highest level. And MK1 currently has one of the most flexible ones. We're far away from the days of Cyrax or Bust.
If you only have MK in mind, when it comes to meta, I understand you.
(Mad broken games in the franchise, you can make people quit playing the game. IceClone knows ...)
I also "deeply" play Tekken and there are no "safe" mixups, you have to take.
All lows are punishable, can be low parried, can be low crushed, can be sidestepped. Throws can be broken on sharp reaction. It's called, options and skill.
Now look at Ghostface, b3 restand TAKE the mix ... how long will the clearly broken setup be in the game. (The one with freezing you. Learn it, go ranked and show them current meta ... seriously tho, the community should do it, so NRS gets forced to fix it FASTER ... they don't care for you, jet you defend them, funny ...)

Armor is not even a universal option, it also cost resources and can be broken, hi cyrax f2 ...
TT2 didn't had such a crazy ambush system, jet it was not popular, almost killed Tekken.
I loved it, it was just even more learning, which I don't mind. They even added a kinda balanced option to play solo. (Bryan/Bruce ff2,ff4,tag,df4,n,db214,b31+2 mad fun wallcombo ...)

Pretty much what he said.

Only played S1 invasions.. dabbled in S2 then gave up. It's shit and pointless and just not fun.
Towers of time just isn't fun for any reason
Online - how can a game in 2024 not give you something to do while waiting for a match?
story, well it was ok to playthrough.. but i'm not paying $50 for the expansion. if it drops to 20, i may give it a whirl.
Kameo's - not a fan of them. although the idea as a means to get more characters in the game is quite smart.

And maybe i'm just getting older and don't care as much about the game?

Oh yes, Maximilian dropped the bomb, I asked for years here on TYM:

Transskrip:
"horrible matchmaking that lets me look at this menu, I'd argue NRS players or
people that have been playing MK1 consistently and I've played this shit
since it came out my dudes, you have seen that opening default stage menu thing
where it says, like connecting to matchmaking, your ass has been looking at
that for like a year, you have spent days of your life, with that menu open looking
for ranked matches um and doing nothing ..."

Watch it, to get more, great video.

I am a "toxic" no one, I get it (and this won't change me), but maybe the heat is now hitting NRS ...
Trash online experience, if you @NRS, think your time sink Invasions, keeps your players in ...

He starts the video by saying that the new characters are great, that the game is fun to play, and that it's fun enough that he wanted to put time into it. It's crazy that people skip that completely. Most of his arguments are based around matchmaking and rooms.

Max understands how to give a balanced, constructive critique, and it seems like that bothers some people, so they ignore all those parts.

You must have missed what IMMIEDIATELY follows...

"However, it was always held down by I'd argue the worst feeling NRS game out there. A game with some cool ideas but not great execution"

I didn't miss it. I said that he gave a constructive critique. Read the post again.
