Yeah, so the key is to never use it from in front of a team; and as much as possible, to use it while dropping down into the middle of or behind a team.
You can get on a ledge overlooking the enemy team, jump, trigger it in the air while falling down and then land and wreck them before they have a chance to do anything about it.
Used this way, it's very hard for the team to be able to react at all until at least 2-3 of them are dead. So it's best saved for when they're grouped up, pushing a payload or otherwise focused on something together.
