What you need to know

  • From November 12, 2023, Microsoft will no longer allow unauthorized third-party accessories to be used with its Xbox consoles.
  • Players are reporting a warning message displaying on Xbox when plugging in unauthorized accessories, notifying them of the date their accessories will be blocked with "error 0x82d60002."
  • Xbox advises returning the accessory and instead referring to its list of authorized products on its website.
  • The message is shown due to the latest console build, which is said to be causing console issues when using these third-party accessories.
  • UPDATE: We've heard from sources familiar with Microsoft's plans that this may be related to Microsoft expanding its program for approved third-party wireless Xbox controllers. Most Xbox third-party controllers right now are wired.

In a significant development for Xbox users, the era of tinkering with your console to use unapproved accessories is drawing to a close. Xbox has taken a definitive stance by instituting a new policy that will block the use of unauthorized accessories with its consoles, effective as of November 17.
This decision has already begun to reverberate amongst the gaming community, and many have already had a warning about it on their consoles in the form of error message 0x82d60002.

The post from Brook Gaming reads:
    "DEAR GAMERS,

We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering support and interest in Brook. We find it necessary to share crucial information with you regarding our Xbox console-related products, which may encounter functional disruptions in the near future.
Recently. we have received player feedback concerning these products when used on Xbox consoles (the latest OS version 10.0.25398.2266. released on 10/16) during online gameplay. An error message may appear: "A connected accessory is not authorized." We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause you. The Brook engineering team is fully committed to developing a solution to maintain product quality and functionality. Please trust that we will spare no effort in identifying potential solutions. Once further updates become available. we will promptly notify you through our official community platforms."

Affect products listed by the brand are:
    • Wingman XB 2 converter
    • XB Fighting Board
    • With partial functionality affected on its UFB fighting boards and steering wheel adaptors.

Brook Gaming's statement highlights a series of issues that have been plaguing third-party, unlicensed accessories, particularly since the rollout of console build 10.0.25398.2266, which was released on October 16. Interestingly, digging deeper into the matter reveals Reddit posts dating back to September, with users on reddit voicing concerns about a wide range of accessories, including joysticks and racing wheels like the Thrustmaster TMX Pro. This brand regularly features on this site and in our Best Racing Wheels for Xbox discussions.

While it's unclear how many products are affected by this issue, there's no indication yet that it has impacted Cronus or XIM accessories. Cronus and XIM accessories are controversial since they allow users to mimic a mouse and keyboard as an Xbox controller. This functionality provides them with a competitive edge in FPS games like Call of Duty, since they offer boosted turning speed and rapid-fire functionality without sacrificing aim assist. However, XIM and Cronus accessories have been used for accessibility purposes as well. As of right now, we haven't seen any evidence that these types of accessories will be affected by the recent changes since Xbox has historically been unable to detect them, but we're investigating.

      Why is Microsoft doing this?

Our sources indicate that Microsoft is lifting restrictions on the ability for third-party hardware manufacturers to build wireless accessories for Xbox Series X|S devices. Indeed, this year we saw the PowerA MOGA XP-Ultra launch, which is among the first official third-party wireless controllers that isn't simply a re-skinned Xbox standard controller, or a patent holder such as some of SCUF's accessories.

Excellent Xbox controllers like the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma are let down solely by the fact they are wired. Microsoft previously had no easy path for third-party manufacturers to get wirelessness into their controllers, with only headsets getting approval via a special Microsoft security chip. Now, we're hearing that Microsoft does have an approval process for official third-party wireless controllers, and this new restriction may be a result of new security measures to put restrictions on inputs that could circumvent play or inject unfair advantages.
The downside, of course, is that Xbox's new policy is affecting many "fair" accessories, particularly in the case of fighting game joysticks and other similar accessories.

Will this affect my third-party accessories?

As long as you're using a product from manufacturers that have officially paid for the Xbox license, you should be in the clear. Brands like Turtle Beach, Razer, and others featured on our Best Xbox Headsets and Best Xbox Controllers lists fall under this category and won't be affected by the recent change. Wireless headsets already need a security chip approved by Microsoft to incorporate wirelessness on Xbox, but it seems this is now being extended more broadly to controllers and similar accessories too. The problem seems to revolve around brands that haven't acquired this licensing but still market their products as compatible with Xbox. It appears that Microsoft is actively blocking these items.
Revy's TLDR Version:

For those who use a Brook converter such as a XB Wingman 2 or Brook XB Fighting Board - Xbox will completely block them starting November 12th. After watching ECT using the Xbox Series S, this will effect hundreds of players who rely Brook products to play at tournaments that use Xbox consoles.

Well damn. I have two xboxes and two Brook XB Fighting Board's used to build controllers that have no "official" equivalent.

I don't like the sound of this. It's also basically and F-All on warning. Internet please forward a large array of poop emoji to MS over this

So far I'm not running into this. I updated my Series X to latest and plugged in my XB Fighting Board based controller and everything was normal so far. I turned the console off and back on and still OK.

Brook does have the statement on their website when you navigate to their XB Fighting Board page so I believe people are running into it.

It’s funny. The FPS communities are jumping for joy & celebrating because Xbox is finally doing something to deal with cheating devices but I don’t think they realize how many other communities they’re impacting by implementing this policy & not just the FGC.

I’m not surprised by it at all since they now own some of the most popular competitive first-person shooter franchises (Halo, Call of Duty, Overwatch 2) & have been having issues with cheaters for years.

Annoucing this when TOs were thinking of getting XSX due to cheaper price point & better performance is a real kick in the head

Don’t use Xbox anymore but this is fucking stupid. And I really hope this isn’t something that catches on or becomes the norm. Like jesus christ, does fkn MICROSOFT really not make enough money to where they NEED you to buy only M$ approved shit? Greedy fucks.

But come on guys.. using a 3rd Party Device compromises your gaming experience. M$ is just looking out for you as a way to make sure the box gives you the best experience.

We have already seen tournaments like ECT make the switch to Xbox & who knows how many others? EVO is the only tournament that I’m 100% sure that will use PlayStation because Sony owns EVO.

The community to really feel bad for is the Killer Instinct community, as they can only play on Xbox or PC. Xbox really fucked them over.

Welcome to PS bois )
Nope. If I didn’t already play on PC, I’d have an Xbox. I can’t play Killer Instinct, Halo, Fallout New Vegas, Perfect Dark (2010), all the backwards compatible games & upcoming Xbox exclusives like the new DOOM & The Outer Worlds 2. Xbox pretty much owns all my favourite franchises & PlayStation doesn’t have a single exclusive I’d play (R.I.P. SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals).

I mostly play on PC so for the moment I guess I'm largely unaffected, but it would be nice if tournaments could opt to not be stuck on Sony PS.

There are lots of us using various devices that all work for us that there may not be a good alternatives for. It's pretty short notice for people given how serious it is for those it affects and I'm extra annoyed at the "return it" wording in there.

I'm sure as shit am not buying T8 on Xbox now. Rip any of those preorders. Rip KI update players and I hope Wheels uses official.

I'd like to complain but I'm not on social media so I don't exist

Wheels has been vocal about it on X/Twitter, so has Maximilian along with several other well-known people in the FGC like Jebailey. A lot of FGC folks are just hoping that PlayStation won't adopt a similar policy (seems PlayStation 5 controllers are quite hated) but they have bigger issues to deal with at the moment.

Now that Twitter is the way it is, I can't really see much of anything unless Google highlights a tweet in their display. Hard to know what's going on in there

What's even the point of owning an xbox anymore?
There's a whole host of reasons. This generation, there's very few things PlayStation does over Xbox. Off the top of my head, those things are:

  1. Play Sony first party titles
  2. Serves as the fighting game tournament standard
  3. And now, can use unlicensed third party peripherals
I don't believe there's anything it does otherwise, and Sony first party titles are now on PC and they're all single player experiences (meaning you don't need to buy them right away), so that point doesn't hold the weight it did last gen.

Conversely, off the top of my head and in no particular order, here's what Xbox does over PlayStation:

  1. Has the hugely successful Xbox Game Pass, something PlayStation's convoluted PS Plus tiers can't match
  2. Has slightly more powerful hardware in the Xbox Series X and a much better value console in the Xbox Series S (both in far better form factors for an entertainment centre)
  3. Xbox Play Anywhere (by a game in that program once and get the Xbox console and PC -Microsoft Store versions together at no extra charge)
  4. Significantly better cross progression and cross play support between PC and Xbox consoles
  5. Microsoft Rewards. Just doing simply things for a few minutes a day, you earn free money to buy games with.
  6. Significantly better backwards compatibility
  7. Auto HDR added to many games that lack official HDR
  8. An overall superior first party pro Controller
  9. Smart Delivery
  10. Quick Resume, the feature no one asked for but everyone loves
There's more, I'm sure, and these are factual, not opinion reasons.

At the end of the day, support the platform of your choice, both have great things to offer, but Xbox has come a long way from the disastrous Xbox One launch in 2013.

Goddamn it. I spent an hour typing a response to that was pretty much this plus a dozen of other reasons & your points more expanded. lol

Don't mistake me though, I'm not crapping on PlayStation. Both offer great experiences and it's up to the user to determine the best fit for them.

I generally find PlayStation and Xbox have re-established their general identities from a decade ago.

So PlayStation is the way to go if you want 3rd person action/adventure games, fighting games/compete in fighting game tournaments, Japanese RPGs.

Xbox is the way to go if you like shooters, western RPGs, racing games, and strategy titles.

Sony has the same policy, right?
No. At least if they do they aren't enforcing it. Evo ran off loads of unlicensed controllers.

At no point in my life can I recall a console not having unofficial controllers.

Am I wrong assuming the Hitbox isn't licensed? There is only one version you use on whatever right?

Consoles are just easier "just works" solutions for your average person and simple to toss in a living room or even cart around. I don't know that equating it to an affordable PC is apt. PC's come with a lot of other things to deal with that is a win or a loss depending on the person

Generally speaking, PC gaming is the "top platform," though there have been a lot of performance issues with games over the last year.

Really though, it's all up to personal preference.

I prefer a mix of PC and console, and PC and Xbox work best in that regards due to Xbox's significantly better cross-support with PC.

All these people going on about how this will stop cheating and improve gaming on the xbox once people upgrade to allowed devices and the 3rd party guys get their license sorted and all that.

I'd just like to remind you that Xbox has crossplay with PC as default for all games. So this "no cheating" excuse is utter bullshit.
