Hello, I work for the art department at Netherrealm Studios, and I have some leaks for you regarding the next Mortal Kombat. MK11 will be called **Mortal Kombat: Extinction**. The game is about a war between multiple Realms, in which one side is led by Dark Raiden and the other by Kitana/Lui Kang. Earthrealm joins Raiden in the beginning, but slowly begins to realize the massive war will lead to an extinction level threat. The war is a master plan created by Shinnok (and being carried out by a secret character), in which will awaken Onaga. Onaga wants to destroy the Realms and recreate it in a new-bleak image.
**Mortal Kombat: Extinction** will launch with 32 characters (including Pre-Order). Here is the launch Roster:

We have 10 planned DLC. There will be 2 packs of 5 characters each. Here is what’s PLANNED. Keep in mind this could change:
DLC:
**Kombat Pack 1***
1) Sindel
2) Pinhead
3) Fujin
4) Baraka
5) Pennywise
**Kombat Pack 2**
6) Johnny Cage
7) Nitara
8) Ellen Ripley
9) Enenra
10) Michel Myers
As you can see, no: Johnny (at least at launch), Sonya, Jax, Mileena, Quan Chi, Ermac, Kung Jin, Erron Black, Triborg, Kabal, or Nightwolf.
There are 4 new characters; two of which are female. Shimmer is the woman who saved Jade from death and is the second Elder God who will be playable in lore. She is the Goddess of Life. Killian is Kano’s son, and is an anti-hero of sorts. He has a great disdain and hate for his father and wishes to take over the Black Dragon Clan; and joins forces with Earthrealm to take his father down. Mercia is a new female Witch and resides on the moon in Earthrealm. During the Sindel Masacre, Mercia saves Johnny and Sonya from death as she saw Cassie playing a role in saving the realms. She also secretly imbued Cassie as an Embryo with the green magic that stopped Shinnok. Ruin is a male from Nightmare Realm (first ever appearance in a MK game), whose parents were murdered by Dark Raiden. He joins the fight against Earthrealm and wishes to show Earthrealm what a nightmare truly is. We learn that the Nightmare realm is where dreams, hopes, and ideas went to die. Unrealized dreams are sent there and are twisted by it’s dark energies.
The next game in the MK series was delayed slightly so that the team could expand the games scope and vision. Story mode has been completely reworked, as to attract non-fighting game players to the franchise. Story mode is now an RPG action adventure in the vain of Assassins Creed: Origins or Witcher. Chapters are no longer character based but is instead based on story arches. You’ll switch between characters based on story and location and will have to sometimes use multiple characters per Chapter. There are 20 chapters in all, and about 5 boss fights per chapter. Bosses are classic MK gameplay.
Like the games mentioned above, exploration is key to the story. You gather resources (each character has their own inventory), make relationships, getter better armor (will expand on this in a bit), learn more about the worlds and lore, and level up (same as inventory). Story mode will also involve dialogue options and actions, which WILL change the course of the story. These are the characters you can play as during the story: Cassie Cage, Jacqui, Kenshi, Kitana, Kotal Kahn, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Takeda, Jade, Sareena, Kai, Ashrah, and Taven. Characters who you don’t play as are still very important to the story mode, and we made sure that no-one was a throwaway. Story Kombat is similar to games mentioned above, as well as the Arkham games (Rocksteady consulted on Story Kombat to make it as immersive and smooth as we could).
We implemented a Kombo system, which emulates the main Kombo system as best as we could. You have three different kinds of attacks: fast, medium, and hard. Stringing these different attacks together gives you a Kombo, which you can then string into another Kombo if your enemy is in the air (or string into another Kombo on a different enemy). In addition to this, you also have a jump button which if you hold, allows some characters to hover/fly or air dash. This is essential to Kombo strings, as you’ll need to jump at times for more efficient combos. Another feature to Kombat is dodging. By default, you dodge frontal attacks. Dodging allows you to change direction quickly. In the Kombat tree, you unlock: new Kombos, abilities, and enhancements. These abilities are attacks that are a character’s special attacks in main Kombat (plus some). You can graft these to the d-pad for additional Kombo strings and attacks.
In addition, most environments are destructible. You can throw a shield into a pillar and knockdown the enemy when the construct crumbles. When a sword and shield are out (or similar weapons), you block instead of dodge.
For Kombat in the game, Variations are out. Instead, we have implemented a new version of Tag team that is balanced and fair. Damage scales appropriately, and it now much more difficult to Kombo while switching between characters. You’ll be able to choose 3 characters per game. Tag team will be optional but will be available in a tournament mode. Blocking and Kombat will remain relatively the same as MKX. Characters will rely less on constant 50/50s (50/50 will still be relevant, but will be slightly easier to react to), and more rushdown. Additionally, zoning has been toned down, but will still be there. Each character has an ability to get around zoning, but only if EX. Running will remain in the game. A new addition to Kombat will be a feature which is called “Dim Mak”, allows you to parry an attack, push your enemy back, and decrease their defense by 20%. This feature is like push block but is more difficult to pull off and acts more like a parry. It requires 2 bars of meter.
Gear is making a comeback from I2, but with a complete overhaul. Due to the new structure of story mode, you’ll be able to craft the gear that you want. Some gear pieces are exclusive to the Krypt, but you’ll be able to find the pieces that you want/need without having to go through a random generator system. Gear will also have no effect on vs. gameplay and will only be cosmetic. During story, gear will change your stats. Skins will also be present in the game, which will be unlockable through doing specific tasks. For example, you can unlock MK1 Scorpion by winning 100 online matches with Scorpion. Each character has 2 unlockable skins, in addition to the base skin/gear loadout.
Faction Wars are also making a comeback but will be heavily altered. From the start, you pick which Faction you want to join, but you won’t be able to change once you do so. There will be maps, and each faction will fight to control different areas of the map. To gain control of a section of the map, you’ll fight both a mixture of AI and real-life opponents. After defeating each opponent, you weaken its strong hold. Once you defeat each person controlling that part of the map, you’ll fight a “boss” with your faction, and once you do, you then control that area. Each faction has multiple “Battalions” (this games version of Guild from I2), in which you join that control each sector. Battalions have a Captain (creator of the Battalion), that will decide where to attack next. Captains select Lieutenants, who are also the main “Boss” that will be available to fight once a sector is taken over (there can be multiple Lieutenants). The more sectors your Faction controls, the more buffs you’ll get in combat. This new Faction War system will be ever changing and will be live. It will allow you to interact with other players and will grow as community.
