MK11 'Leaks': A Case-by-Case Analysis

The cool gimmick is the return of an all new variation system.

And the misses:
  • Like the Salina/Dominic Leak above, this leak makes no mention of Custom Variations, which are apparently the primary new game mechanic in MK11.
Just a quick note about the part I have quoted above.

While this leak makes no mention of Custom Variations (which is true), you list it as a miss, but it's actually a partial hit/miss. The leak clearly states that the cool gimmick is the return of an ALL NEW variation system.

When this leak was made, it's quite possible that the "Custom Variations" hadn't been given an official name yet. The fact that this leak makes mention of a new kind of variation system is definitely a hit in my book.

Mortal Kombat 11 Leak (You don't have to believe me)
Anonymous Mon 23 Jul 2018 15:47:05 No.425216552 ViewReplyOriginalReport

Hello, I work for the art department at Netherrealm Studios, and I have some leaks for you regarding the next Mortal Kombat. MK11 will be called **Mortal Kombat: Extinction**. The game is about a war between multiple Realms, in which one side is led by Dark Raiden and the other by Kitana/Lui Kang. Earthrealm joins Raiden in the beginning, but slowly begins to realize the massive war will lead to an extinction level threat. The war is a master plan created by Shinnok (and being carried out by a secret character), in which will awaken Onaga. Onaga wants to destroy the Realms and recreate it in a new-bleak image.

**Mortal Kombat: Extinction** will launch with 32 characters (including Pre-Order). Here is the launch Roster:

Returning from MKX:
1) Cassie Cage
2) D’Vorah
3) Goro
4) Jacqui
5) Kano
6) Kenshi
7) Kitana
8) Kotal Kahn
9) Kung Lao
10) Liu Kang
11) Raiden
12) Reptile
13) Scorpion
14) Sub-Zero
15) Takeda
16) Tanya

Returning from MK9:
17) Jade
18) Noob Saibot
19) Rain
20) Shang Tsung

Returning from 3D Era:
21) Sareena
22) Kai
23) Ashrah
24) Kira
25) Onaga
26) Daegon
27) Taven

New Characters:
28) Shimmer
29) Killian
30) Mercia
31) Ruin

Pre-Order:
32) Shao Kahn

We have 10 planned DLC. There will be 2 packs of 5 characters each. Here is what’s PLANNED. Keep in mind this could change:
DLC:

**Kombat Pack 1***

1) Sindel
2) Pinhead
3) Fujin
4) Baraka
5) Pennywise

**Kombat Pack 2**

6) Johnny Cage
7) Nitara
8) Ellen Ripley
9) Enenra
10) Michel Myers

As you can see, no: Johnny (at least at launch), Sonya, Jax, Mileena, Quan Chi, Ermac, Kung Jin, Erron Black, Triborg, Kabal, or Nightwolf.

There are 4 new characters; two of which are female. Shimmer is the woman who saved Jade from death and is the second Elder God who will be playable in lore. She is the Goddess of Life. Killian is Kano’s son, and is an anti-hero of sorts. He has a great disdain and hate for his father and wishes to take over the Black Dragon Clan; and joins forces with Earthrealm to take his father down. Mercia is a new female Witch and resides on the moon in Earthrealm. During the Sindel Masacre, Mercia saves Johnny and Sonya from death as she saw Cassie playing a role in saving the realms. She also secretly imbued Cassie as an Embryo with the green magic that stopped Shinnok. Ruin is a male from Nightmare Realm (first ever appearance in a MK game), whose parents were murdered by Dark Raiden. He joins the fight against Earthrealm and wishes to show Earthrealm what a nightmare truly is. We learn that the Nightmare realm is where dreams, hopes, and ideas went to die. Unrealized dreams are sent there and are twisted by it’s dark energies.
The next game in the MK series was delayed slightly so that the team could expand the games scope and vision. Story mode has been completely reworked, as to attract non-fighting game players to the franchise. Story mode is now an RPG action adventure in the vain of Assassins Creed: Origins or Witcher. Chapters are no longer character based but is instead based on story arches. You’ll switch between characters based on story and location and will have to sometimes use multiple characters per Chapter. There are 20 chapters in all, and about 5 boss fights per chapter. Bosses are classic MK gameplay.

Like the games mentioned above, exploration is key to the story. You gather resources (each character has their own inventory), make relationships, getter better armor (will expand on this in a bit), learn more about the worlds and lore, and level up (same as inventory). Story mode will also involve dialogue options and actions, which WILL change the course of the story. These are the characters you can play as during the story: Cassie Cage, Jacqui, Kenshi, Kitana, Kotal Kahn, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Takeda, Jade, Sareena, Kai, Ashrah, and Taven. Characters who you don’t play as are still very important to the story mode, and we made sure that no-one was a throwaway. Story Kombat is similar to games mentioned above, as well as the Arkham games (Rocksteady consulted on Story Kombat to make it as immersive and smooth as we could).

We implemented a Kombo system, which emulates the main Kombo system as best as we could. You have three different kinds of attacks: fast, medium, and hard. Stringing these different attacks together gives you a Kombo, which you can then string into another Kombo if your enemy is in the air (or string into another Kombo on a different enemy). In addition to this, you also have a jump button which if you hold, allows some characters to hover/fly or air dash. This is essential to Kombo strings, as you’ll need to jump at times for more efficient combos. Another feature to Kombat is dodging. By default, you dodge frontal attacks. Dodging allows you to change direction quickly. In the Kombat tree, you unlock: new Kombos, abilities, and enhancements. These abilities are attacks that are a character’s special attacks in main Kombat (plus some). You can graft these to the d-pad for additional Kombo strings and attacks.

In addition, most environments are destructible. You can throw a shield into a pillar and knockdown the enemy when the construct crumbles. When a sword and shield are out (or similar weapons), you block instead of dodge.

For Kombat in the game, Variations are out. Instead, we have implemented a new version of Tag team that is balanced and fair. Damage scales appropriately, and it now much more difficult to Kombo while switching between characters. You’ll be able to choose 3 characters per game. Tag team will be optional but will be available in a tournament mode. Blocking and Kombat will remain relatively the same as MKX. Characters will rely less on constant 50/50s (50/50 will still be relevant, but will be slightly easier to react to), and more rushdown. Additionally, zoning has been toned down, but will still be there. Each character has an ability to get around zoning, but only if EX. Running will remain in the game. A new addition to Kombat will be a feature which is called “Dim Mak”, allows you to parry an attack, push your enemy back, and decrease their defense by 20%. This feature is like push block but is more difficult to pull off and acts more like a parry. It requires 2 bars of meter.

Gear is making a comeback from I2, but with a complete overhaul. Due to the new structure of story mode, you’ll be able to craft the gear that you want. Some gear pieces are exclusive to the Krypt, but you’ll be able to find the pieces that you want/need without having to go through a random generator system. Gear will also have no effect on vs. gameplay and will only be cosmetic. During story, gear will change your stats. Skins will also be present in the game, which will be unlockable through doing specific tasks. For example, you can unlock MK1 Scorpion by winning 100 online matches with Scorpion. Each character has 2 unlockable skins, in addition to the base skin/gear loadout.

Faction Wars are also making a comeback but will be heavily altered. From the start, you pick which Faction you want to join, but you won’t be able to change once you do so. There will be maps, and each faction will fight to control different areas of the map. To gain control of a section of the map, you’ll fight both a mixture of AI and real-life opponents. After defeating each opponent, you weaken its strong hold. Once you defeat each person controlling that part of the map, you’ll fight a “boss” with your faction, and once you do, you then control that area. Each faction has multiple “Battalions” (this games version of Guild from I2), in which you join that control each sector. Battalions have a Captain (creator of the Battalion), that will decide where to attack next. Captains select Lieutenants, who are also the main “Boss” that will be available to fight once a sector is taken over (there can be multiple Lieutenants). The more sectors your Faction controls, the more buffs you’ll get in combat. This new Faction War system will be ever changing and will be live. It will allow you to interact with other players and will grow as community.

You missed this one, which I think has the best roster, story and is the most in detail (read all the way through the page). I'm really hoping this one comes true. If they really came up with this story, then kuddos to the NRS team.

https://boards.fireden.net/v/thread/425216552/

It also had Shao Kahn as pre-order. Differs from the previous ones by boldly stating that KAI, KIRA, (wow, never seen those names before), Sareena, Daegon, Taven, Tanya, Ashrah and Rain are together with the classics and 3 kombat kids as playable (specifically says no Kung Jin). Gives the names Mercia, Ruin, Shimmer and Killian for the 4 new characters. Of course, one is an Elder Goddess and Killian is Kano's son. Has Cage or Jax NPC, but Kano playable, so it differs pretty much from the others. Said it was to be announced around Halloween under the name Mortal Kombat Extinction, but they may have pushed it back a little and changed the name in order to keep the hype. It had a point with Shao Kahn as pre-order. Definitely not debunked yet.

Huge misses on that one. Italian Gamespot leak says 6 characters and 6 battle passes planned. No mention of custom variations. Says will be announced on Halloween and released June 7th. Says will be called Mortal Kombat Extinction.

All of this could've been changed. Overall I'm a little suspicious, especially of the roster. Dvorah and Goro in but Erron Black out? Very bold though.

We should find out Jan 17 if this leak is legit because the gameplay will show the "Dim Mak" system.

I Think there is a small chance that the 10 chars DLC thing is true. I think, there may be technically 2 Kombat Packs with 5 chars each, and the reason the Premium Edition says 6 DLC characters is because they are counting Shao Kahn.
There is precedent. Goro and Darkseid were both DLC, but did not belong to any of the actual fighter packs
This is an excellent point! I'll update the post if that turns out to be the case. The Italian GameStop leak is obviously something we'll have to assess as we go, especially given the language barrier.

This is not credible. The fact that the game's title is completely different is a pretty strong indicator, along with being completely wrong about the timeline of the announcement and the game's release. That aside these guesses are not even particularly good IMO, and the new characters in particular don't fit with the established lore. I sincerely doubt this Elder Goddess is named 'Shimmer', which sounds like a character from She-Ra or Jem or something.

Also, "I work in the art department"? Please. Direct from NRS is not where leaks come from, historically.

This is along the same lines as the "music department" leak I dismissed in my introduction. Not a plausible leak.

Just a quick note about the part I have quoted above.

Nope, I disagree. The leaker specifically describes what this cool new system is: a system by which there are two variations, each representing the character pre or post the MK9 timeline reboot. There's nothing about customizing them, and there's nothing left vague about the 'all new' system and what it's supposed to be.

What do you mean by "Italian Gamespot leak says 6 characters and 6 battle passes planned"?? I don't understand.

From the supposed leak: "Gear is making a comeback from I2, but with a complete overhaul. Due to the new structure of story mode, you’ll be able to craft the gear that you want." Could the custom variations actually be referring to this? Do we know exactly that they're called "custom variations"?

And the fact that the woman is called Shimmer. Well, see this video again:

Notice how she's described? And the new charcater does kind of "shimmer" in the trailer.

As I linked in the OP, the Italian website for GameStop has posted details of the premium edition of the game, presumably before they were supposed to. It describes a 'Kombat Pass', which includes 6 DLC characters and 6 'Battle Passes' (we don't know what those are yet). More details will probably come to us at the community reveal in January.

From the supposed leak: "Gear is making a comeback from I2, but with a complete overhaul. Due to the new structure of story mode, you’ll be able to craft the gear that you want." Could the custom variations actually be referring to this? Do we know exactly that they're called "custom variations"?
From the Announce Trailer description: "The all new Custom Character Variations give you unprecedented control to customize the fighters and make them your own."

It would be bizarre to use the word 'variations' to describe something purely aesthetic, when variations were a major part of MKX gameplay.

And the fact that the woman is called Shimmer. Well, see this video again.

Notice how she's described? And the new charcater does kind of "shimmer" in the trailer.
I mean, yes, she does shimmer. But I sincerely doubt they would name this character 'Shimmer', when other divine beings have had names drawn from world mythologies -- Japanese in the case of Raiden and Fujin, and Greek in the case of Argus and his Edenian wife Delia. 'Shinnok' is the only one with a name that's totally made up, but it sounds sort of faux-Babylonian (like Marduk).

'She shimmers, so her name is Shimmer' is a weird justification. Raiden crackles with lightning, but his name is not Crackle.

While we're at it, let's look at the other two original characters this person claims are in the game, besides the Dream Realm woman and Kano's son (characters almost everyone is expecting in MK11):

"Mercia is a new female Witch and resides on the moon in Earthrealm. During the Sindel Masacre, Mercia saves Johnny and Sonya from death as she saw Cassie playing a role in saving the realms. She also secretly imbued Cassie as an Embryo with the green magic that stopped Shinnok."

She lives on the moon? A cute nod to the silhouette of a witch in the old Pit stage, I guess, but that seems unlikely. More to the point, this doesn't bear any resemblance to the actual lore: Cassie's 'green magic' is established in MKX to be something passed down through the Cage bloodline, as they are descended from a cult of warriors in the Mediterranean that bred empowered warriors for the Elder Gods.

"Ruin is a male from Nightmare Realm (first ever appearance in a MK game), whose parents were murdered by Dark Raiden. He joins the fight against Earthrealm and wishes to show Earthrealm what a nightmare truly is. We learn that the Nightmare realm is where dreams, hopes, and ideas went to die. Unrealized dreams are sent there and are twisted by it’s dark energies."

This one's clearly just somebody's DeviantArt OC.

Personally, that particular truth doesn't hurt, character sounds too edgy even for MK standards.
If I had to choose the leak I'd want to be true, It'd probably be the one you dubbed The Female Antagonist Leak.
Same! It's the one I gravitate towards the most, and I think it's the strongest in terms of predictions. But there are a few clear misses, and the totally debunked bullshit about a new comic book feels hard to overcome.

Also, this is not very definitive, but I've heard that the pre-order game description on the digital stores says that local players are 1-2 and online players are 2-8. That could be an indication of no tag mode?

The Oracle Leak is the one I REALLY want debunked. I don't want the roster set in stone yet, I don't want THAT roster set in stone, even though it is actually not a bad one at all.

I think that's a bit of a reach, re: Tag Mode. I hope so, anyway, because I really want Tag Mode back! It's my favorite.

And I agree. I don't have a huge problem with the roster listed, even if it doesn't have my favorites, but a) nothing deflates hype like a total roster leak and b) the Onaga plot it describes sounds boring.

Maybe just a difference in opinion. The point is that we don't really know enough about what is so "custom" about the variation system to really know if it's a hit or a miss, hence why I really think it's a partial hit/miss.

If it's just that we get 2 variations (one old timeline and one new timeline), and they can be customized via the gear/moves system we have in Injustice 2, then those aren't really customizations, particularly in terms of competitive gameplay, they're just cosmetic. By that, I mean we have 2 variations (old and new), and customizable attire and Injustice 2 style move additions which won't have any bearing on tournament play.

If that's what it is, then this is a hit, and not a miss. If it's truly customizable variations (and thereby a miss), then the game is going to be played competitively in its vanilla form with customizable variations turned off, the same as INJ2.

Sure, but my point is this 'leak' doesn't say anything about customizing them. It presents the variations as two static options with cool differences between them.

Either way, it's not as big a problem as that same person claiming to know about a comic on the way that we now know wasn't in development.

Terrible times breed terrible things, my lord.
Pretty good analysis of the leaks. Really impressed with the in-depth scrutiny and soild attention to details. I really really miss reading things like this on here.

I thought there were 2 more out there that I've seen on Reddit and discord but I never really pay attention roster leaks. My lost I guess.

As much as try not to pay attention to the roster I still wonder what engine it's running on. Or the other tweaking they've done to the mechanics.

Also the MK9 backwards compatibility that was mentioned before has me excited as they've done the same thing with Injustice for Injustice 2.

Anyways I look forward to reading more from you. Thank you for such a great well written post.
