Lord Raiden General Discussion Thread

Obviously it's not a variation meant to really compete. But Raiden would have:

  • Great Anti Air in Summon Lightning
  • Great Corner Carry in Electric Fly
  • Great movement via Teleport
  • Great reversals with Quick Charge/Discharge
  • Great plus frames, hit confirms, and staggers with his strings.
I could see someone going with that variation just to force themselves to really work on their fundamentals. Basically a training variation if you wanted to try and work on something specific.

Actually when you put is this way there might be some actual potential lol.

Been having a bit of a character crisis since returning to this game for Ultimate, but it seems Raiden may just be what I'm looking for. He has a lot of tools I feel are pretty much required for a character to be competent in this game:

  • An advancing (relatively safe) mid string in B12.
  • Multiple options off said string, allowing for staggers, an overhead and general mind games. The overhead being +1 feels really good during corner pressure. Overall he feels very oppressive when he has his opponent cornered.
  • The ability to punish moves that are -6 on block with Discharge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any other character in the game can do this.
  • Storm Cell gives access to high damage combos with great corner carry.
  • Two respectable, albeit flawed, anti airs in S1 and D2.
  • Can play lame if necessary with the right loadout.
  • Fun, intriguing options with moves like Lightning Storm and Super Bolt for when things get a bit stale.
  • Easy Krushing Blow with 121 that you are almost guaranteed to see every game.
  • Christopher Lambert skin.
Overall, he feels a lot more fun to me than most of the cast presently. The only things I don't like are the over-reliance on B12, and Lightning Bolt being way too slow to be any use in fullscreen projectile wars. Other than that, he seems solid as hell.

I light lighting storm fly a lot
like yeah character to character you can get poked out on b12 but whatever, b12 got its own new life with b14 also being added and being plus

what it is at least in my testing, is an unstoppable tool for f4

even if you were to somehow flawless inbetween the f4 and the lightning strikes if f4 connects all 3 strikes connect on block destroying a fastest possible timing u2 so you just gotta accept it

little over 6% chip on block 18.5% on hit, worth a bar imo for such ignorant offense being able to use f4 safely and wildly.

The only problem for me is that I can't get the hang on the timing for doing F4~float AMP at all :(

That's amazing. And at least it costs a bar, so we're not quite at old Raijin staff levels of auto-pilot.
This is better imo lol. Electric burst does only 2% chip. You may reset the neutral but against many characters you’ve definitively lost your turn. If you cross up the stomp Raiden is only -1, and that means you can mash out a D1/discharge and beat even 9f mids. All at the cost of a bar.

to the corner where they will die.
This is probably the most interesting comment about Raiden I've seen on here .. I find that part very true. When I get an opponent in the corner it's game over. It's so much you can do however would u mind to elaborate? Maybe it's something I'm missing lol. But on wake up I catch ppl with neutral jk or teleport from behind or pressure with f3 if they delay wake up sometimes I whiff a f3 then go for another f3 as they start to get up etc.

Just stand back and threaten with f1/f2/f4/summon lightning etc. Raiden controls the perfect range for covering rolls and jumps and all that bullshit.
Once they're scared let the f3s and b2s rip.

It's also because even with the recent nerfs to knockdown advantage, Raiden still has very good knockdowns imo. Fly is still +30, summon lightning is still +47, float into stomp is +38. So you have time to walk back and bait wakeups, rolls, jump over them, etc. Raiden's B14 plus frames also don't have pushback in the corner, so they are easier to enforce in a traditional sense, not to mention all his plus frames on hit are easier to enforce for the same reason.

Took Rooflemonger's video and extrapolated on it. I didn't realize he was +18 on hit if you cancel as early as possible from Stance, which means he can pretty much set you up for a scenario where he has a bunch of options that you have to guess about, and I think that's pretty dang cool, considering F4 is totally safe to do this from on block as well.

The +18 you can get off any string as well as normals like F3. It just leaves them further away if you use strings mid screen. But this only really works mid screen, in the corner you have to cancel differently and you don’t get as much hit advantage.

Too bad. I think Quick Charge + Lighting Storm + Electric Current could be really good.
I've been having success with that variation, just with his burst special in place of Lightning Storm. I need to mess with lightning storm more because it does seem much better than burst, I just like the mindless safety lol.

I love that Current turns f3 and b1 into staggerable, mildy-reactable 50\50s that dish out solid damage. I need to utilize Quick Charge better for punishing, but it's such a pain to lab...

Question for you Raiden players: how do you approach the Buzzsaw Lao matchup? All I can really seem to do is try to zone him out, since his Buzzsaw beats out every pressure option I've tried. Any tips or tricks to make it a bit less painful?

So basically Raijin lol

Float offers the exact same, but does more chip damage, offers more options, cannot be OS'd, but doesn't reset neutral, which is good/bad depending on what you like.

I haven't played it yet, but Raptor made a video about punishing F13~AMP buzzsaw, which would be Lao's main pressure string. I posted the video in the MU thread. Raptor didn't cover this, but discharge also interrupts both regular and AMP buzzsaw if you stand block F13 and reversal discharge before buzzsaw comes out, so there's that (it's in the punishing sheet as well)

Is there a trick to getting the down-up input to come out consistently after strings? Seems that no matter how much I practice, it only comes out about 5% of the time (literally like 1 in 20 tries). That's the only reason I haven't integrated Lightning Storm into my main variation. (edit: I've gotten it to be a little more consistent by slowing the down-up motion. So like f4~pause-down-slight pause-up.)

And am I missing someththing with amplified Lightning Storm? Sometimes it shoots out 3 bolts and I keep flying, other times it shoots one bolt and I immediately drop to the ground. I'm not pressing anything after the down-up motion other than the amplify button.

All of their DU inputs require a delay to be able to get the special cancel, basically like you have to wait until the move is supposed to come out to do the input. It's a recurring feature of Raiden at this point with teleport, easiest way to start is to use a string like B12 to keep the input timing as consistent as possible.

I think you press 4 to cancel float, sure you aren't pressing that? He can end the lightning early for pressure shenanigans and hit frames.
