Hidan, Insuperable, AdmiralAugustus, RTO Toxic, Under_The_Mayo, IniquityDM, anyone else I can't think of ATM who knows the sorcerer well...

I've been trolling with the Quancheesy one for some time now, but I've never really gone the extra mile of mastery.
And the more I see of him rising up the ranks, the more I feel like he's a more-than-worthwhile character with a lot more to offer than just the Rune & Mayo Traps.
And unlike all my previous pursuits...Shang, Jade, Stryker, Mileena, etc...he appeals to me enough that I know I won't just get frustrated enough with failure to go back to one of my regulars; I really WANT to make the effort to learn his ways rather than just keep him in my pocket stuck at basic level.

What can you guys tell me about him that'll be instrumental to my improvement?
I'm not yet concerned with seperate matchups as I am building the stiff, solid fundamentals and avoiding bad habits and avoidable mistakes.

Who can help the Boxy One get his Woolay to MAXIMUM DAMAGE?

Standing 1 AA > 1,1,3 > Trance

D1 or D4 > Trance for crossovers

Learn those, they will be your lifeline on defense....

What specifically do you want to know?

Hells yes :D.
I think that why he appeals to me so much...I've spent enough time with Cy, Sub and Mac that I've picked up on almost all of their tricks, but my problems lie in execution and counter-attack, whereas with Quan, there's so much about him I haven't figured out yet that learning the dirty deeds while building his foundations will make the experience that much more awesome.
Hell, just the fact that I'm FINALLY motivated enough to rep my old main again is hype as fuck. Makes it FUN again :D.

So far...definitely changing my inputs to make his combos more comfortable.
X = 1 + Square = 2 + Triangle = 3 = B3 1+2 never misses, Traps feel smoother, and juggles stop dropping.

Precisely things like this. The little instrumental bits and pieces that comprise the best possible iteration of the character, especially defending against the retarded things people are capable of in this game.
Solid AA combo = Augustus makes Boxy's day better :D.

It`s my opinion that quans best "mixup" is his 1 1 2 string inbetween runes. 2 1 2 rune can lead to 1 1 poke pressure into another 2 1 2 rune, and the 1 1 poke is building meter and taking chip. But opponents know about this so they poke out after 1 1 so you dont keep Runing them. When an opponent starts poking out thats when you commit to 1 1 2 trance, they try to poke and get launched by the 2 into trance. Now you`re taking combo damage, building meter with whiffed runes and trances, and setting up another rune trap at the end and the whole thing starts over again. It`s not hit confirmable, but you have to understand how big of a risk this is for your opponent too. If they DONT try to poke out, they`re gonna be eating runes all day. If they do try, and you commit, they`re even more fucked. I don`t see Quan`s doing this, perhaps for fear of the trance being blocked, but you really just have to detect if they poke out or not. When they are poking out, you nail them.

Okay, the credit for the 1,1, 3 goes to WelfareChef, but the one him and I use is:

1, 1,1,3 >trance (insert meter building tech here), 1,1 xx Skydrop (looks so fucking slick)

D,1 (or d4) > Trance (insert meter building tech here), 1, 1 xx skydrop

Standing 1 is absolutely retarded for AA's when you get the timing down. I AA'd Reptiles jump back kick. D1 is the same.

You mean that flimsy little wrist flick of a D1 does have a practical purpose? Awesome :D.
I can extra salt somebody by beating them with a pansy smack...

Mayo, I'm gonna be trying that out tonight. It's amazing how many people online don't know how to deal with him.

Its seriously great. No one wants to sit there and let you build more meter inbetween your rune traps so they HAVE to poke out. But then they get hit with 2 trance. I nail my team with it all the time and they just go "gooooooddddd daaaaaamnit!"

watch the final round fight between Dink and CD Jr. When CD jr was smoke. Jr blocked 1 1 and got hit by the 2 because he tried to poke out. If dink had commited to the trance, he would have had him fucked.

I'd take a look at ShujinkyDink's quan because imo it's the best right now. Look at the replays of him at FR, and other tournies. Other than that take a look at his bad mus that you might need to cover or what you can and can't do in them... Basically breaking down the character. Keep in mind that he can't take too much pressure up close because his D1 is pretty bad, and your uppercut will be the best escape, and a good AA option. Once he gets you in the trap with meter he's deadly though, as everyone knows.

Quan Chi is garbo IMO but if you master him he will be a boss. I have no idea how to stop those damn infinite strings. The last two good ones I played got owned the first round and the first half of the second then went ahead with that rune trap/mind control infinite and won. I played ShujinkyDink's Quan in ranked once, I heard he was the best and I beat him but it really didn't seem like he was trying very hard.

Will definitely be looking up the footage, THANK YOU FELLOW SORCERERS :D.
I haven't felt this good about mastering someone new since I crossed paths with Ermac.

I would really recommend running through the expert ladder and working on mastering the range of Quan's trance. I'm still working on that and man, is it important. But yes, I highly recommend watching Dink's gameplay. I still hold onto my believes that Quan is a rushdown character. Expect to have your B3 1+2 blocked and that's okay, all that meter is going to turn the tables once they make a mistake. I like to follow up a blocked B3 1+2 with a d3 (7 frames) and a F12 1+2/trance. Raiden and KL are the only two characters that I truly feel are unwinnable for QC because they're awful awful MUs. Quan just dominates with his comeback factor. Once you learn to pace yourself with him and really capitalize on that he really overwhelms people big time.

Oh, and his JIP trade is F12~trance. Quan's JIP trade is ridiculously good just like Ermac's and Scorpion's. Mayo, I totally dig your idea with 11 throw/2 that's a nice 50/50 you've got there. I've just been doing 11 throw myself.

Dink understanding of the character is second to none, only a couple mistakes against Jrs smoke and it could have went either way, we all know what happened to jax.

Dink has no problem helping fellow quan players either, hit him up and talk quan with him man, and you will see how deep the quan rabbit hole goes, shit blows my mind, and that character makes me salty on a regular :)

IniquityDM, you always knock me on my ass with that Woolay Fu.
The next time I have Kombat time to throw down, we've gotta get some games. It's been too long, and my connection is no longer shitty, which means no more ass-lagging :D.

But in the meantime, the Ladder will definitely be the way to go for the time being. That's how I learned all my matchups with Cyrax, looks like Quan'll be going to the same Expert school.

MileenaOTR - it's not an infinite, more like the ultimate frame trap. Soooo good.

Yes, if you're reading this, or you find me online, and you play Quan Chi, Boxy wants to pick your brain.
I'm trying to start from scratch as far as my fundamentals and habits, and I want to gather as much useful info as possible to build him with. Since I've started playing again, regardless of whatever stupid shit I lose to online, I feel a LOT more confident and swift with my movements, instead of being a hesitant goof all the time, and I want a character who accompanies that mindset and MAKES me behave in a calculating and mindfucktastic manner.

Woo to the Lay.

I rarely ever Skype, but should I in the near future, you'll be the guy to call :D.

How do you guys feel about Woolay Stomp or JP/JK into it as an anti-air into pressure?

This is one of the FR moments I missed and it's also one of the most sought moments I can't wait to see.

I use Quan, but like Boxy, never really decided whether to try and really get him nailed down, like I did with CSZ or Kano. After seeing Hidan reach a final, and Dink taking out CD Jr with Quan, I don't think there is any question that this character isn't good now.

Guys, I can`t stress enough how important it is to NOT use F1 2 after an anti-air jump punch. You should ONLY use F1 directly into trance. F1 2 adds no extra damage, and only increases the change that the combo will drop. Again, I`ll cite Dink`s games at FR. There were 2 moments where he hit CD Jr with an anti air collision, and then he hit F1 2 trance, and the 2 completely whiffed after the 1 hit, which resulted in a dropped trance and rune trap set up. If anyone wants to see this in detail, please look up my video The Dawn Of A New Quan (http://testyourmight.com/threads/mayo-presents-the-dawn-of-a-new-quan-new-video-guide.9508/) and watch the section on Anti Air. Everyone needs to stop with the F1 2. You`re losing guaranteed trances just because of your muscle reaction to automatically follow F1 with pressing 2. If you can change this, you`re gonna see a huge difference.

By the way, I would agree right now with Dink being the best Quan. Particularly watching his first fight at FR. I`ve never seen such a VICIOUS rush down. And thank god, a Quan player that has intelligently incorporated the B1 poke. Just using that poke made his rush down so chaotic and effective. I had a huge grin on my face the whole time. I think everyone could learn a bit from him.

about that 112 mix-up, I've been using it, and one thing that I found cool to do in Mayo's rune scenario is to do 11 b3 1+2. If your opponent's used to blocking the entire string and you may be able to catch them off guard with the b3 or a throw.
