Amid a myriad of delays, setbacks, issues, and adjustments this weekend, the main question on many viewers' minds was, at the end of it all -- would the matches deliver? The setup for MLG was perfect; the nation's best alongside a few world travellers, coming from their respective states and territories, would finally meet in one venue in Anaheim with very little filler in the bracket, and a number of rivalries and storylines to be settled and culminated. If all roads in the FGC lead to EVO, in the NetherRealm community those roads often run through MLG; and the effects of these tournaments' notoriety are often lasting.

But while circumstances may have threatened to break our spirit, the field of competitors came together and delivered a set of matches on Saturday that was a strong as anything we've seen to date. The tournament was a whirlwind of quick upsets, stunning comebacks, and pretty much every flavor and style of match you could want. We saw slow-paced tactical matches, like the meeting of Theo and Jupiter, which ended in a hard-fought tit-for-tat 3-2 edge for Theo. Then there were fast-paced high-stakes contests, like the set between Sonic Fox and Slayer that ended with Sonic coming back 3 straight games to prevail in one of the craziest finishes of the day. There was 16 Bit's decisive runback against Sonic Fox, who dispatched him in the final round of Final Round earlier this year; and a resurgent Tyrant who looked incredibly sharp as he pounded both DarthArma and Gross into the pavement in 3 games apiece.

The extent to which members of the community have levelled up over the past few months was very evident in today's top 8. With a fantastic assortment of matches, and a ton of exciting turns, twists and finishes, the overall level of play was incredibly strong, and it was not immediately clear who would be the victor in each match. We saw an incredibly close set between Theo's Superman and Whiteboi, who has never looked better and rampaged through his way through a minefield of a bracket to reach top Four. But Theo's patience, poise, and knowledge of the game (and yes, Aquaman's trident rush) proved to be too much to overcome, as he notched his record 3rd major victory in a row at MLG.

At the end of the day, what could have been a significant negative became a positive by Saturday and a fun-filled, incredibly strong showing both for Injustice and its crew of top players. Although MLG will definitely need to go back and take a long hard look at both their event and stream production after this event, the players transcended it all in order to deliver a memorable performance that will be talked about for some time to come. And with both CEO and EVO in sight, we're in for a high-octane summer and a bunch of juicy IGAU action to come.

A horribly run tournament with 20 Pizza Hut commercials after every first life bar taken. Capture card crashes every third match. Switching commentators every match. It took 3 hours to get through top 8. A thunderous WTF, MLG is not the way to go.

Conquering CEO next weekend maybe? He's got the funds to make it for sure :p

Grats Theo, what is that like your 3rd or 4th major win this year? On fire!

I hope that damn MLG tourney didn't rape everyone's wallet. CEO should be so much better next weekend. I'll never complain about Twitch streams again, ever.

I think MLG and FGC just aren't meant for each other.
