well ..... it's a polemic itself this thematic aspect of the franchise, but, let's talk about it

in MKX we had this variation system, but people complained about they being unbalanced, with one of them being always the most prefered and chosen over the others; so .... was not 100% well received and accepted by the mk fgc, that's a fact

in MK11, yep, the game was at first promoted as being based on 100% customized free of choice builds, aroung the characters .... once tha game came out, we saw the mess NRS did about it, and so, this system is not working that well so far for this game

in fact, the only way I see a MK12 game working more or less, is coming back to the roots , using a MK9 system, where you have complete characters with all tools they need for the game;

or in the worst scenario, NRS keeping the variation system of MKX, but using only 2 fixes pre determinated variations per character instead of 3. That could work if you just put useful moves/special moves in the 2 variations, and cut off all the crap useless stuff remaining of/from previous games.

Just teasing 100% free customization and total control of character building as MK11 did , but, in the end, putting a crap restriction in the game, due the fear of competitive level to be bad tainted, was a dirty move and fake propaganda by the developer, so, definitely , the MK11 variation system is a major fail and should not ever return back to this franchise

I'd prefer it like MK9. Complete characters, no bullshit.
There's no reason they can't just combine all variations and give it to a character, other fighting games don't seem to have a problem giving each character a wide aresenal of moves. Variation system is just a lazy form of balancing which really looks like it has been counterproductive

In MKX it wasn't so bad, I mean... I think new characters like Cassie and D'Vorah were favoured by this system, because each variation clearly provided different fighting styles.
And to some extent, I think other characters maybe had this benefit too? Even if some variations were absolute trash. My biggest gripe was how the movesets of characters like Kitana for example, were butchered just to justify the three variation system. This applies to some other characters like Mileena, Ermac, Reptile, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Quan Chi... some variations are way more viable than others. Even more, some variations are just gimmicks. Poor Shinnok, he feels pretty bareBONES lmao really, think how his character would be a lot more interesting if he had all of his moves in a single moveset.

Then MK11... didn't improve a single thing. It's a terrible system.

Go back to unique movesets, complete characters, no variations.

This is a good post to check myself on my last post like remembering Crimson and Eldriken (unless I'm mistaken) saying "be careful what you ask for". Not trying to diss but sometimes you just have to remember NRS is not another game developing company....

Did hatin on MK9's engine or broken-ness get NRS to change the engine? Would be fine if they added 10 characters and retconned after learning from balancing issues. If you're going to do an engine at least make a 2nd model

What? who hated on MK9? I've always wanted complete characters. As I enjoy complete characters in every fighting game I play. This variation thing that they started in MKX was concerning back then, and look where we are now.
The term complete character gets thrown around all the time, but it seems to me is ill-defined. If any singular variation in MK11 was the only choice, would that be a complete character to you? Do they need to have every tool for every situation and no weaknesses? Is it a certain number of special moves or strings? Is it just viability? What is the metric here?

I don't understand either. It's not like every character would have all the moves from all 3 variations + some custom abilities in 1 variation.

This game was built around the idea of custom variations. They should have just let that rock instead of caving to the players who freaked out about customs and begged for tournament variations. Look at how it turned out. Genetic feeling characters that can't do shit. I feel so restricted playing tournament variations. And I only ever play tournament variations since I play ranked most of the time online.

Fighting games need CRAZY shit in them to remain fun and interesting. Customs allow you to do just that. And yes, I've heard it all before, "You can't lean the matchup of customs are allowed". Really? I've leaned what most of the moves in this game are capable of. I don't even look at my opponent's variation, I just look at the moves they are using during the loading screen. I believe since customs were the original focus they listed the moves for you to reference and make you aware of what your opponent is using.

If anything, the variation system ensures that most characters get some play time during competitive settings. There is at least one or two variations that make most characters viable. This was not the case with MK9 from what I remember.

if 1 variation means mega roster than I am all in.
if 2 variations are done MKX style I am all in as well, but w/o custom move sets. as much as it's a fun idea most of the moves are unusable
Sidebar: I also prefer real skins over gear. I am not a fan of red Sub Zero Blue Skarlet and Yellow Kitana and MKX skins were by far more creative
and polished. The character colors actually mean a lot to me visually

I'd say no. I don't mind them for casuals, but so far they haven't really seemed to work as intended, at least on the competitive side.

I'd much rather have just 1 complete character. imo the variation system hurts character designs because everyone needs a base kit that can function well with a bunch of different tools and it just ends up with every character having a set like v1. the zoning variation, v2. the rushdown variation, and v3. the weird and bad one. No character can really be locked into a specific archetype which kind of limits the potential. One of my favorite parts about the injustice games is that they have a lot of awesome character designs that really push their archetype like Grundy, hawkgirl, captain cold, and bane which I don't think they could really do if those characters had to flex into 2 other variations.
I disagree with this, because I feel like just having 1 loadout removes opportunity for creativity. Maybe they felt giving some characters certain things felt like a risk, like they just wouldn't be used much, but then thought well theres 2 other variations so it doesnt matter. With just one variation there may never have been a character with that trick like setups, or Sonya drone, konjurers egg etc. They might have felt these weren't good enough for it to be the only loadout and played it safe/boring. At least variations allowed a bit more creativity.

I'd dig full customs. So similar to the MK11 system, but you can slot in some moves when you pick your character. Maybe include some presets that can be customized if you know the combination you want.

One of the issues I have with MK11 is that it didn't go all-in on the customization. It's not just the tournament-variation thing, it's also far too annoying to swap loadouts during casual matches.

Edit: Watching this pros-playing-customs tournament now, and it's awesome. I like the game in its current state, but this shows how much potential is still there.

They marketed this game like CUSTOMS CUSTOMS CUSTOMS, but then last minute they through some shit together. Make it like mkx if variations are still gonna be a thing.
Ed said at the start that they may or not be used for competitive play, that they were still deciding, and that he was leaning against it in favor of having standard variations for competitive play.

It was people here spreading misinformation that they’d definitely be in comp, but that’s not actually what the company said since Day 1.
 
No, please give us characters with more base options! This will bring out more creativity in the characters’ gameplay. Instead of one playstyle with each variation/loadout
