Combo Breaker 2019 Top 8 Set!

Mortal Kombat 11 at Combo Breaker has proven to be an excellent showcase in gameplay with perhaps the most diverse competition we've had so early on in an NRS title with representatives from all over the world including Australia, The Netherlands, Canada, and many more! Competition has been consistently fierce from pools to top 24 play and the momentum hasn't slowed down.

I enjoyed watching literally every single match of this top 8. We saw Cetrion, Jade, Skarlet, Kung Lao, Baraka, Kitana, Erron Black, Geras, Sonya, Scorpion, Jacqui, and Cassie just here in top 8. Holy shit that's a LOT of characters being used at a very high level from so few players.

Did you guys noticed how Skar avoided so many grabs?
There's a lot of mind games that go behind that. Yes people say that it's a true 50/50, but there's a lot of variables behind it. A Jacqui player strongly excels in the corner meaning most throw attempts should theoretically be towards the walls to maintain positioning especially against Sonya's strong ring zoning game. But Scar knows this so the chances of him guessing right is higher. There's also the mindgame if Sonic was willing to risk positioning for 140.00 dmg.

There's a lot of layers behind that which I really enjoy watching.
 
can we all just agree now that Bo5 is so much better than Bo3 .... for viewers and players? Nothing in CB has been as hype as these matches and a lot of that is as they were Bo5.
I disagree - I think FT2 ended up working very well, especially for the viewer, for everything leading up to top 8. Top 8 needs to be FT3, but FT2 actually gave pool matches stakes and made more sense for a tournament with that many entrants.
 
That tournament was so hype. And big props to Scar who was strong on so many fronts; one thing was he was teching so many throws (he trains with Sonic, so he probably has a feel for Sonic's throw game). Another point the commentators brought up was that he hadn't been doing many wakeup attacks before the finals but started implementing those in suddenly. I'm sure Sonic is the type to analyze his opponent's other matches even when he's not playing and so this seemed to have caught him off guard.

The most impressive thing in my opinion was just how reactive Scar was with everything. He stayed patient through SonicFox's constant stagger and grab pressure, all the while getting in small hits that he would instantly convert into good damage 95%+ of the time. He regularly read and blew up SF's pressure attempts. Absolutely amazing.
 
One thing this tourney showed me, especially during that Grand Finals, is just how important teching throws are in this game. In Mkx, it didn't feel as important because that game was 50/50s and double-digit plus frames for days anyway. But in MK11, it's such a crucial source of damage that being able to tech them reliably seriously increases your odds of outlasting your opponent.

Like, how many throws did Scar tech? How much damage did he deny Sonic Fox, and it was damn near down to the wire anyway?
