Discussion 10/21/16 Tier List (Spicy)

This is a nice dream but sadly, there's no such thing as a fighting game without a C or D/F tier. This game is NOWHERE NEAR that balanced.
If the thread were broken down to variations, I'd agree with that. But this thread is about each character's best variation.

Based on what I've seen since the patch, I can't think of any character without at least 1 very solid variation.

I imagine it must be frustrating developing a game for a community that often seems so insulated.

In other fighting games, S = broken. Think Vergil or pre-patch Phoenix in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Yun in prep-patch SF4, or Kabal in MK9. These are characters that have tools that make them ridiculously overpowered, thus granting the people who play them potentially fraudulent wins--I'm looking at you Viscant.

I'm sure many would argue that pre-patch Tanya fit this category, as well as pre-patch Alien. But now? With the new patch there is no character that bodies the majority of the cast for free, so let's get rid of S tier. It just makes us look like we don't know what we're talking about and will give someone who's coming in from another game the wrong impression about MKX.

As for D grade down, that means the character is basically useless (i.e. trash tier). Are there some questionable variations? Sure. But whole characters? Not at all. Triborg as a base character is way too good for any of his four alts to be called unusable, Cyber Sub especially. If you think otherwise, play him for a bit and you'll see.

Since no one has posted a recent tier list, and I'm slow at work I thought I would take the liberty of upsetting some people. This tier list is based on the best variation used for each character depending on the matchup.

*No particular order in each tier*

S
: Sonya, Takeda, Sektor, Sub Zero, Shinnok, Mileena

A+: Jason, Kitana, Ermac, Quan Chi, Smoke, Kano

A: Cassie, Predator, Reptile, Goro, Liu Kang, Cyber Sub, Scorpion, Bo'Rai Cho

B+: Kenshi, Jacqui, ?Johnny Cage?, Alien, Tanya, Tremor, ?Leatherface?, Kung Lao

B
: Kotal Kahn, Raiden, Erron Black

C: Kung Jin, Ferra/Torr, D'Vorah

D: Cyrax, Jax

I admit I am not a guru so there will be obvious things people are gonna want changed, please comment and explain somewhat so I can update this as it's out.
You haven't fought any Tanya's huh?

It's a spicy tier list fools, I chose to treat it as if it had to be broken up from S to D. A to B tier lists are dry

S doesn't always mean broken in tier list, just the best of the best

S+ or S++ was always the ones that were treated as if a certain character placed in that tier, was in some way above the rest (match-ups and overall tools). I disagree with the notion that S should be barred. That's silly talk.

To be fair, during the first few months people were still getting used to Johnny Cage's gameplan and cancels. Meanwhile, Predator, Tanya, Tremor, Kung Lao, Quan Chi, Ermac, Scorpion, Raiden, Cassie, etc all existed. They had better punish potential, pressure, mix ups, damage, etc. He's always been good and continues to be but the Cage community wasn't as bad as it's made out to be.

Or top 10 lol a+ To me
How does she do versus strong teleport characters like Imposter Shinnok, Ninjutsu Scorpion and Shirai Ryu Takeda?

By the way, the letters (i.e., S, A, B, etc.) are arbitrary. They do not represent "broken" or "trash tier". Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a well-balanced game, yet the community uses the letter S to represent its top tier characters.

Kobu does very well against teleport characters, if someone was to choose Scorpion Ermac or Takeda on me in tournament i'd use Kobu, Pyromancer handles shinnok though

Hmmm... I would have thought S tier would be no losing matchups just like F tier is no winning matchups. I guess it does not matter, but it does make a clear delineation about how balanced the game is or is not. I think that works well but meh... either way.

I don't think there is any variation with no losing matchups. There are 100 characters to choose from and just too much variety for a variation to have something that can't be exploited by at least one other one. Not now at least. Maybe vanilla Quan, vanilla Liu Kang, vanilla Raiden, or CEO 2015 Tanya.

Didn't that guy win EVO for Marvel vs Capcom 1 before it was even called EVO? Lol

Smart players pick good characters, leaving salty people salty.

He didn't really have a ton of losing matchups when I think back to it. But someone who played Lao back then please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yeah I doubt he straight up lost to anyone. Maybe he had some MU's where you had to adjust your play style a bit but I think he always had good tools with stupid plus frames off hat. Maybe Kitana was a struggle back then because she slowed the pace of play but he can/could deal with her.

I don't sell Avon.
There's no such thing as a B tier character in this game, even the perceived poorer characters (Cyrax and Jax) still have good tools but there's no real reason to pick them outside of loyalty to the character when you could use Smoke/Sektor, in Cyrax' case and Tremor, in Jax' case.
