The portrayal of women in video games.

http://geekout.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/24/booth-babes-need-not-apply/

What I'm talking about is the girls who have no interest or history in gaming taking nearly naked photos of themselves with game controllers draped all over their body just to play at being a "model." I get sick of wannabes who couldn't make it as car show eye candy slapping on a Batman shirt and strutting around comic book conventions instead.

I'm talking about an attention addict trying to satisfy her ego and feel pretty by infiltrating a community to seek the attention of guys she wouldn't give the time of day on the street.
I call these girls "6 of 9". They have a superpower: In the real world, they're beauty-obsessed, frustrated wannabe models who can't get work.
This is probably relevant but I somewhat agree with this article. Ya'll should read it.

And dudes get just as much of objectification as well, not just video games.

First you need to resolve the issue addressed in that article, I think the issue of women portrayal is just brought upon itself in a sense. Than people run with idea of objectification because both sides generally don't give a shit, aside from the few vocal minority.

Just watched the video and I'm really glad you posted this,

I think the real issue is just sexism in the video game world so to speak, not so much as how females are portrayed in videogames. Just look at TeamSpooky's stream chat when a female goes on commentary. The amount of sexist remarks is mind boggling. He literally had to ban people that subscribed and paid for the chat for how immature they were acting. The VGC has a long way to get past this "tits or gtfo" "get back to the kitchen" mentality.

As for how females are portrayed, that really depends on what game your playing. In Tekken, for dlc the male characters are literally wearing a thin thong, and the females are pretty decently covered up in their beach costumes (except for Anna). MK has had a history for making there characters well....sexy in the past. Depends on what game you play.

To add to this, in social media women are portrayed to look "sexy" as well, as compared to men. This attitude leaks over to games. That's the true root of the problem. You can't kill a weed if you don't get it by the roots.

Yea, I try not to look at the streams when I commentate. I've been told I should be gang banged, I'm a bony old skank, kitchen and sandwich jokes. Then there's my pm box of downright crazy stuff! Like, I'm too confused to know if I should even be offended by some of it. So sometimes I avoid checking it.

But I can just say "lol Internet" and ignore it pretty well now. Or avoid it completely if I just don't look.

This poor woman was like hunted. The pack mentality of people can be quite disturbing.

ETA; I have to admit, the bony old skank comment is kinda funny now. I don't mind being trolled a little. But what happened to her is way out of line. And over something that minute and unimportant.... We can get all "oh no! Someone is WRONG on the Internet!" sometimes, but never that .... Just cruel and disgusting.

Wow that is totally uncalled for. Just stay strong, the best thing to do is just ignore it all. They say karma is always the best medicine :p

Of course the video game developers/companies will be behind this movement. If they can get the number of female players to the number of male players then they pretty much almost doubled their market.

Samus Aran? GTFO of here. She had NO personality. Not until other M and metroid fusion.
Other M? Personality? Ohoho, you sure got me good.

I hope to christ you're joking

As to the topic at hand. Vidya games are in the same situation comics are. It's mostly a male dominated market and as such a good chunk of games/comics have fanservice for the burly men that buy them.

The point was that the reaction to discussion of this topic is incomparably hostile in the gamer community. Of course this is a universal problem, from magazines and movies to comics and games. But I think gamers feel an elevated sense of entitlements to maintain the status quo of objectifying women.

Seven74 There is no history of huge anti-male hatred and discrimination based on muscle size. But there is a history as long as human existence for women being viewed as sex objects and baby makers and slaves to men. And maybe we should ask ourselves where the real difference lies. If MK had several gay members of it's cast and they were wearing tube tops and licking lolipops, there would be an outrage (at least from reasonable people). How is it that horrible stereotypes about race and gender are easily viewed as offensive, while the entire female half of our species is forced to be portrayed in a way that immediately elicits the reaction of, "Damn, I wanna tap that ass." Obviously it's the market, but maybe we should demand higher standards. The majority doesn't always get to keep things as they are. If they did, we'd still have slaves and women wouldn't have won the right to vote.
this is a great point.
However, there is a huge discrimination between the presented males in most video games as well.
In this situation ... the demographic for video games plays the biggest role in how they are created. That demographic really doesn't ... and never has demanded high standards. I mean, there are other games that protray women in much worse light than this (you know that). I think if they really wanted to get to the bottom of it they would... but our inability to really care about fake women or how they are portrayed to other women lets developers do what they please.

I'll leave this out here for you.... what IF there was a gay character in MK. Would there be outlash that he is getting his shit beaten in by a white stereotype male? a black stereotype male?
At a certain point, we all have to remember that these are fantasy.

Honestly I've never played the game. When personality is brought up it doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be a "good" personality. All I know is it got slammed in reviews because she was too "girly" and taking orders from a man. The last metroid games I played were the prime ones. So I apologize if my comment was a little brash.

While this will be seen as something controversial, I don't think it should. It's a real issue that deserves real attention and introspection. As we grow as a culture, and demand more respect in the eyes of others, we should take a hard look at how we treat women in our community (not just MK) and the way we look to the outside world when we over-sexualize our female characters. If there is to be discussion about this video, I'd ask that it be mature and not simply a reflection of the problem.

I don't get what the problem is. Male characters are over-buffed and so Women characters should be over-sexy. Nobody wants to see over-buffed chicks and over-sexy males. So I say shits fine the way it is.

As a gay man, it doesn't bother me nor distracts me to see Mileena, Kitana, Jade, or even Sheeva dressed like dime store street walkers. However, it is utterly ridiculous. I mean, aren't these women supposed to be skilled and deadly assassins? If I had any control over outfits or victory stances etc., I'd have an alternative outfit for Cage and Jax in NOTHING but a tight speedo showing the outline of their cocks, and when they won the match they'd shake their ass like Magic Mike and give me a nice convincing wink. Now, straight men of TYM, do you see how ridiculous that would be? ;)

I still fucking love ponies. Also sharks and dinosaurs and pink things and Mayo's voice and Baraka's b3,1.

Never did grow out of playing dress up. :)

Female characters in video games have their physical attributes accentuated because the majority of the gaming audience is comprised of young men. Using attractive women to market to them is a no brainer, and no one should complain about it. Developers aren't selling pornography to minors, so what's the problem? Any 12 year old can walk down the street and see women dressed equally, and built physically similar to women like Laura Croft on any given summer day. In Heavy Rain, Madison Paige wears clothes which are entirely reasonable, and even in panties and a tank top it's not an exploitation because some women wear that in the comfort of their own home. If they had her in a thong bikini for the entire game then people would have a point. And when you look at fantasy games like MK, or Ninja Gaiden, or DOA then you just have to chalk it all up to fantasy.

If you go back and look at Indian,Greek, Roman, and Italian sculpture then you will see the same thing when fantasy is at play: figures are nude, and sex and sexuality is often accentuated. Also, back in western culture the male form was considered more beautiful and perfect than the female body. During the time of Michaelangelo women weren't even allowed to sit for nude studies. Would anyone consider the David an objectification of men? Would anyone consider Renoir's The Bathers an objectification of women? It's just fantasy. People like fantasy, especially when sex is involved. Men like sex. Women like sex. What's the problem?

Princess Peach is really a dangerous trope? Really? Real life princesses don't exist? Little girls don't like princesses? Most little girls like ponies, princesses, and they fucking go batshit for pony princesses. What the fuck is so wrong with that? No one is saying they won't or can't grow up to be a molecular biologist, or a physicist, or president of the United States. But a lot of them fucking like ponies!
You make fabulous points. And you are totally right. It's just the reality of it all. I, by all means, am not some crazy gay liberal who is offended by everything under the sun, but seeing my girls in 4 foot stiletto's, hopping around like gypsy hookers when I actually view them as deadly assassin FIERCE bitch warriors, it takes away from MY fantasy. Unfortunately, my fantasy is in the minority! lol ;)

This could destroy tym, people will be waking up soon and logging on to tym and will see this. A dark path we have just blindly walked into. Every one will find that no matter how supportive or grossly offensive someone's opinion gets, they are 100% correct and there are only hush up responses from those who wish not to share theirs. Just like me.
However I deeply dread the condition of tym after this thread stays up for too much longer. when all goes to hell I just want everyone to remember that it happened because under_the_mayo thought it be cool to be "controversial" and is entirely his fault
Cool to be controversial... You`ve entirely missed the point. Some people care about real world issues, and like to think that they are part of a community of intelligent people capable of having a real discussion.

first off: women have the right to dress any damn way they like. if a man is so pussy-starved he can't even look at a sexily dressed woman without losing his shit and acting like a damn fool then he needs to be neutered. blaming women and their clothes for how men treat/view them is like blaming women for when men rape them. the fault is with the rapist, not the victim.

with that said, yes, in video games, and in all facets of life, women tend to be objectified and treated like sexual objects. they may advance, but in order to do that, they must accept the objectification and play the part. and they will always be seen as inferior while also being demonized for using their womanly wiles to play the game. this is if they are lucky enough to be deemed sexually attractive. if not, they will be ridiculed mercilessly for not living up to whatever image is imposed on them, and no matter how brilliant, qualified, or capable they are, they will be held back and forced to fight 100 times harder for what should be theirs already. men, of course, are not really subjected to this. no matter how thin, fat, old, young, etc., a man (a white, straight man, that is) can be successful and be taken seriously. so long as they are aggressive, dominant, cocky, and full of "swag" ( i HATE that phrase). these traits, of course, are NOT generally appreciated in women. those that show them are absolutely vilified for it.

now, specifically regarding video games, on the corporate/creative/developmental/financing side, sex-obsessed straight men make up the overwhelming majority. therefore the games they create will both reflect this and be intended for a similar audience. so, while you will see plenty of diversity in how male characters look, most female characters will be beautiful, dressed like whores, and given jiggling boobs (notice there are no jiggle mechanics for say, johnny cage's or jax's ballbags, nor are there any male characters who dress in thongs and grope themselves for a victory pose). it isn't just in america, either; japanese games are probably even more extreme in this regard (ivy, sophitia, chun li, cammy, mai shiranui, etc.)

i'm no prude, nor am i offended by the female form. but as a gay dude, i get nothing out of watching semi-naked female characters cavort onscreen. and it does seem odd that (using MK as a reference) nearly every male character is not only fully clothed, but wearing armor (which makes sense since they are about to engage in bloody battle) while the females, who are also marching off to kombat, are doing so in high-heels, corsets, and thongs. i see it for what it is: horny game developers using sex to sell games to horny gamers. i'm very sex-positive, and i think sexiness in all its forms should be celebrated, but i think ANYONE who buys or plays a video game just to see some digital titties bounce needs to get laid IMMEDIATELY.

Maaan we don't even have a full fucking quan chi guide and yet here we are planting c4 in tym's foundation.
I like mortal kombat dammit! Move it to MKU

Go play the new Devil May Cry demo. Your wish is coming bro... during the first cut scene look closely at the male presented in the billboard for that green drink.

You can't miss it.

Do not touch me again.
A few issues here:
  1. This is not the proper forum to discuss a serious topic like this, simply because the arguments will be so one-sided. We are not the people who are offended by the ridiculous portrayal of women in video games, so what do we expect to get out of this thread? If anything, misogynists will be polarized further by internalizing the opinions of other like-minded individuals.
  2. Women are portrayed like shit in video games. There's no doubt about it. Think about why there's a "Bob" in Tekken but no equivalent female character.
  3. The sexist portrayal of women is part of a much bigger issue: the "farm-to-table" sexism and male dominance of the video game ecosystem. The marginalization and downright abuse of women in the tech field has been well documented, which undoubtedly affects how these companies decide to portray females. The sales of these games to kids not only nurtures the unrealistic expectations of women that they have, but also act as reinforcement to the game companies who operate under these bullshit premises like "sex sells." We're currently in a midst of a positive feedback loop where every game has to be 'sexier' in order to one-up the previous iteration.
