The portrayal of women in video games.

While this will be seen as something controversial, I don't think it should. It's a real issue that deserves real attention and introspection. As we grow as a culture, and demand more respect in the eyes of others, we should take a hard look at how we treat women in our community (not just MK) and the way we look to the outside world when we over-sexualize our female characters. If there is to be discussion about this video, I'd ask that it be mature and not simply a reflection of the problem.

I really don`t want to hear "Jax has muscles and that`s a stereotype too so it`s all fair!"

No. When an ugly fat man can`t get a good serious role in a TV series, then we`ll talk. But don`t BS me and say that this is the same. Women nearly always have to be physically appealing to the male demographic if they are going to be considered marketable. Meanwhile, male characters and actors can be fat or hairy or old or scrawny or just all together ugly, and it doesn`t hurt sales.

First of all, obviously games aren`t the only medium where this issue persists. It`s everywhere. But there`s something unique about games, and comics as well. It`s the standard. When you look at movies, tv shows, magazines, or books, sure there are oversexed portrayals of women. And of men too, taking something like Magic Mike for example. But I can find you thousands of movies and shows that feature women in ways that are not supposed to appeal to sexual desire.

However, games are the opposite. We have to have a game like Heavy Rain to have a female character not running around in a skimpy outfit. (And even that game had to ruin it with a gratuatous shower and sex scene.) If you`re here to defend the persistant portrayal of woman as physical objects to gawk at, do it without comparing it to other mediums. Games are way worse, and we know it. And the existence of the problem in other places doesn`t justify it all together.

You see sex appeal overload in action and horror movies. And games are almost all universally action, so I can see why sex is so often thrown in. But that`s the whole problem. Our medium then becomes 95% saturated with female characters bursting with cleavage and thongs up their asses. For girls growing up with a film interest, at least they aren`t bombarded with sexual imagery at every turn. If they grow up gamers, they have no choice because sex is in their face at every turn. Is this really healthy for them? And is it healthy for our culture overall?

How does constantly being fed sex in order to peak our interest not just feed into the stereotype that we are a bunch of children?

We don`t have to strip sex from everything. I`m not saying MK has to change and that Jade needs a sack thrown over her. It`s not about one game. But maybe we could rise above our own horomones and personal tastes to ask for a higher standard for the greater good. Let there be sex in games, but don`t make it to where sex and games are synonymous.

We should can see a sexed up female character and love it. But we should reject when characters are turned into sex objects. The perfect example would be Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. She was a heroic woman that overcame a terrifying scenario, in a fully clothed Special Forces uniform. She never needed to flirt with anyone to get her way. Her clothes were never ripped off. She never made sexy one-liner jokes. Yet she was still entirely feminine. Then as the games progressed (or regressed, rather), she donned mini skirts and tube tops, doubled her breast size, and fell into the mold of modern CGI sex toy.

There`s something wrong with this. It`s alienating. It`s unimaginitive. And it simply pushes the idea that we have to appeal to the lowest common denominator every time.

I`m glad people are talking though. I don`t just stir up shit for laughs. Discussion is good for everyone.

Coming from a female gamer, I will say that it has always bothered me the way woman are portrayed in video games or the media. If you haven't heard of the word 'objectification' you should look it up because it is the very reason that the Mileena's and Taki's are seen as nothing more than eye candy. It delivers the message that if you're a female and you want to be seen as high and mighty in this world then "Show me ya Boobz" is the only route to go. It bothers me when I'm hanging out with my guy friends and all they talk about is the 'jiggly physics' that female character has. If we could stop with the sexy kittens wandering all over the media than woman would be taken seriously. Kitchen jokes wouldn't exist when they realize woman can be just as tough as the guys. It's something that I have been wondering what would happen if that were to change.

The point was that the reaction to discussion of this topic is incomparably hostile in the gamer community. Of course this is a universal problem, from magazines and movies to comics and games. But I think gamers feel an elevated sense of entitlements to maintain the status quo of objectifying women.

Seven74 There is no history of huge anti-male hatred and discrimination based on muscle size. But there is a history as long as human existence for women being viewed as sex objects and baby makers and slaves to men. And maybe we should ask ourselves where the real difference lies. If MK had several gay members of it's cast and they were wearing tube tops and licking lolipops, there would be an outrage (at least from reasonable people). How is it that horrible stereotypes about race and gender are easily viewed as offensive, while the entire female half of our species is forced to be portrayed in a way that immediately elicits the reaction of, "Damn, I wanna tap that ass." Obviously it's the market, but maybe we should demand higher standards. The majority doesn't always get to keep things as they are. If they did, we'd still have slaves and women wouldn't have won the right to vote.

That's just sick. My views on feminism may differ from hers, but no one deserves to be threatened like that.

As for feminism in video games, I embrace and even celebrate my sexuality. I cosplay the MK girls and have never once felt exploited or degraded doing it. I've always thought of it as showing love for the game and community and bringing hype. Keeping us in the spotlight. I have fun, the players enjoy it, even other women usually want pics with Jade or Milly.

I think women's bodies are beautiful and should be celebrated however the individual feels is appropriate. So I do not mind smutty characters. Or appearing that way myself to others who do not approve.

It's strange how her and I have received similar treatment with such differing outlooks.

Specific areas of the brain are activated when a person is watching animation rather than "real life" if you saw a real life fatality you would be seriously disturbed. My point is, video games are completely entrenched in fantasy and fiction. If you take anything from a game to heart the issue is with you, not the game. In other forms of media that are clearly trying to.portray real life, that is where the issues start.

Look I agree completely that women should be treated better and not looked at as objects. But it would REALLY help, if women didn't dress the way they did.

They say, "don't treat us like sex objects".........then they go and dress like this...

I remember some woman asking for donations on one of those sites like IndieGoGo to obtain the money necessary to buy a huge collection of games--for research purposes--to make a video series on sexism and how women are portrayed in video games. Some guy I love to annoy on G-Faqs Sonic boards was so angry at the amount of money she made that he started making pseudo-sexist remarks on her twitter, and even made a boxing video game on Flash in which you could beat her up, just to demonstrate "equality." Needless to say, the game became viral and controversial, and that scallywag appeared on various news articles.

Case in point, well, actually, I don't know what my point was. Just a funny memory.

Getting threats because for a belief is just wrong. The gaming industry has shifted a bit though, we no longer see women being helpless needing to be saved all the time, we see them kicking ass and taking out the villains themselves, that's sort of progress, as far as being sexual objects what about women watching movies like Magic Mike, yeah that was popular because it had a great story right? Or the twilight movies, women love those because of the great special effects and amazing story right? It's not because all the boys are pretty and sparkle in the sunshine is it? People are all superficial.

If any video game is to be blamed it's Cooking Mama.

You see therein lies the problem. I would say males enjoy when women dress up like that. Hell women do to! I mean its just cosplay. I cosplayed as Zack from Final Fantasy VII once. No big deal. That Jade outfit is for fun, not something women usually wear all the time. If you feel good enough about yourself, then go for it!

Did you not watch the video?...

Sexism is a problem, however, sometimes I feel folks are being a little too sensitive. MK for example is clearly pure fiction and over-the-top in every way possible. Jax has giant steel arms and Sonya has giant....well you get what I'm saying :)

There are plenty of accurate and respectful depictions of women in video games--more so now than ever before. There are plenty of problems with sexism, but I just feel video game depiction of women is low on the list. Efforts for equal pay for women performing the same job as males, for example, is much more important.

I understand that game designers are creating these characters and their likeness, so there is concern, but plenty of women embrace the sexy yet powerful and dangerous angle depicted by female characters in video games. It seems to be buckshot in that regard--some women are offended, other are indifferent, and others embrace it. For this reason, I feel there are far worse sexism issues at hand. Ask any woman if they think it's fair to be paid differently because of their gender--I would think nearly 100% would say no. That is not the case with the depiction of women in video games.

I really boils down to the majority and the majority is guys. Stats show that guys play video games way more than girls it's a well known fact. Does it bother me that I'm the minority? Hell no! I love hanging out with guys, it helps balance out the drama I deal with, with my girl friends when I just don't give a shit any more I'll go hang out at my guy friend's houses. The point I'm trying to make is that when you are trying to sell a game you are going to go with what every guy (the majority) wants and that's sex appeal in the female characters. Maybe if we could get the same equality with the sex appeal for the guys as well I wouldn't really care. Not saying I lose sleep over this stuff just saying.

I'll give a perfect example: In TTT2 you can get the beach DLC where everyone has a beach outfit. The guys in the Michima/Kazama family wear thongs. Does it bother me, hell no! In fact I get a kick out of it when I pick those outfits purposely in front of the guys because all they do is gag the whole time. But I do it anyway. The point is if your not going to change the Playboy bunnies in video games, then give us girls something to holler at as well. :) I really like this forum because it gives me the chance to see what the guys and gals really think.

Samus was the best portrayal of a female character I can think of while still retaining the eye candy aspect (dat zero suit unf) but they ruined her in Other M making her very emotionally vulnerable and in need of rescue which is in deep contrast with her previous portrayals.

...but even so, I don't know what its like to have female problems and stuff so yeah...like its said...the distance between men and women is wider than any sea ;_;

Firstly, Bayonetta is the best portrayal of a female character. :REO

Secondly, I completely understand where these people are coming from. I am currently a prostitute in GTAIV, and thanks to this campaign I will be able to become the financial consultant I always wanted to be and get off the streets.

This could destroy tym, people will be waking up soon and logging on to tym and will see this. A dark path we have just blindly walked into. Every one will find that no matter how supportive or grossly offensive someone's opinion gets, they are 100% correct and there are only hush up responses from those who wish not to share theirs. Just like me.
However I deeply dread the condition of tym after this thread stays up for too much longer. when all goes to hell I just want everyone to remember that it happened because under_the_mayo thought it be cool to be "controversial" and is entirely his fault
