You can't talk about moving goalposts if you're throwing in UFC games that haven't even sold a million copies, lol
People will do and say anything just to be negative toward this game, including saying blatantly untrue things like, "SFV was better at launch than MK1."

They can just not like the game. It doesn't have to be the worst thing to humanity since Hitler and it doesn't have to be the end of the world. They can just not like it. But they go to some lengths, man.

Saying casuals don't want Shaolin Monks, but are instead on twitter begging for Sonya, is just disingenuous lol. If you are on Twitter demanding characters, you are not a casual fan of something
Man.

I don't see how that tracks.

Unless you think casual fans don't have characters they like?

That's like saying that players wanting Ken and Ryu in a Street Fighter game aren't casual.

His logic is impeccable.

Shaolin monks remaster/sequal has been talked about for 10+ years, the game universally praised - conclusion: yeah its just 10 hardcore fans, nobody wants this.

Sonya not a fully playable charcater for 1 game - conclusion: bro the millions of casuals on twitter are demanding her back right now, sonya trending on twitter all day everday since mk1 release

If his posts are actually genuine and not satire, he might be the most delusional apologist shill i have ever seen.

The thing is, casuals aren't asking for Shaolin Monks by the millions. They'd completely tear NRS apart for repeating an idea that is based on a currently failing genre and say "why didn't you just make a fighting game?"

The general public is speaking with their wallets, and right now MK11 is the biggest success by far, and MK1 is the best-selling FG (that we know) of the current generation.

The solution is not to hop genres, but to continue to make improvements and have better launches. And for WB to adjust their pricing and monetization strategy, which adds insult to injury.
Well, the general public is also speaking calling this game highly polarized, to say the least. Shaolin Monks 2 has been a highly requested thing for quite some time, though obviously I cannot for certain say there are "millions" wanting that. With the success of the singleplayer games from recent times (specially Wukong), I think it would be a safe bet, if executed correctly, I'm not convinced they'd pounce at NRS trying something different after obviously rushing a MK game and receiving backlash for it.

However, of course, this is all conjecture on my part.

Life was wasted on you.
As much as I want a new Shaolin Monks game, I don't think that's the course for NRS to take to see greener pastures again. It would please X amount of individuals, but I don't think it would see anything close to the success of previous NRS games.

My man if you're on social media, going under developer tweets and making requests, shit is not just casual for you.

If executed well, it has a hell of a lot better chance in the current state of affairs nrs is in, with regards to fan opinion of them and the games released recently, then a third in a row mk fighting game.

Everyone from the most casual of casual to the ultra hard core players will be super cautious about buying another nrs fighting game. The game will be scrutinised on all fronts it would be impossibke to avoid. Nothing short of perfection would cut it, if the next game is an mk fighting game.

Shaolin monks remake/sequal has been requested and talked about since the mk9 days.

On multitude of polls on eds twitter shaolin monks has been the winner. Any time ed boon mentions shaolin monks the comments and reception is overwhelmingly positive. But twitter also isnt the sole metric and lots of fans dont participate on twitter. Shaolin monks is beloved and universally praised pretty much anywhere you can look.
The only polls I remember Shaolin Monks winning were the ones about a remaster.

When Ed asked if people would like to have a new Shaolin Monks game, or just a remaster, the new game option lost. Not even 100k people voted in the poll.

Back during MKX Ed asked about KP3 or a whole new Shaolin Monks game, and Shaolin Monks didn't win that either:

So I'm not saying absolutely no one wants Shaolin Monks, but as far as the public wanting a new SM over the next fighting game, I'm not convinced. They didn't even want it over a Kombat Pack or remaster.

i already answered this question and even openned a thread about it, you however didn't finished, and proceed to say that, that wasn't they focus currently, so it's like beating a dead horse at this point.

I know for once, my propositions aren't golden, and while it wouldn't solve all the issues, definitely would solve part of it, in gameplay terms.

But also as you presented before, NRS needs more leeway with their WB bosses, when they request for something, like time, delays they also have to understand that these are for a better product overall, this is also something that needs changing and more so in the WB part
What are you talking about? I don’t remember you making a thread about anything relating to this, much less responding to it. Do you have a link to it?
The only one I remember that can even be close to this would be your thread about the Ghostface patch. And if that’s the thread you’re referring to, I didn’t even respond to you in that thread I don’t think. I only remember talking to PrinceGoro in that thread

I think one issue is people seem to have different definitions of what a “casual” is. From what I understand a casual to be, they absolutely could/would be on Twitter or any other SM begging for certain characters to be added.

What is your definition of a “casual” gamer, and is it different than a “casual” in regards to fighting games?

I think you have this backwards. We found out that MK1 had sold 4 million copies in August, when the game had been out less than a year. That's the number that everyone will use for comparison until we get a new update, which usually happens only once a year if that. That doesn't mean it's "stuck".
Sure, we will wait another year to find out how much khaos realm has sold, no problem, that if the support for the game is still alive and kicking by then

SF4 didn't hit 4 million until a year and several months after it released.
So you're adding an 2010 game variable and market time to compare to what in MK1 again? Do you really need to go this back, a game comparable to SF4 back then was MK9, i don't see why you need to go far back when SF6 it's there and directly competing with MK1 and has already sold 4 milion in it's year 2.

All we know is that Khaos Reigns probably didn't have the impact WB wanted it to, but from everything we know MK1 is still the best selling fighting game out right now. That's why MK11 is the peak of success, not SF.
"Probably" it's a specific word, it really didn't, have you ever asked yourself how much money it cost WB for production of the game, like paying orchestras for music composition, paying actor like Megan Fox for voice acting? Let alone, how much of that ivestment money they managed to recover? Not even talking about the aditional cost of Khaos Realms, which "clearly" didn't met expectations.

They lost money, probably more than they expected, considering MK used to see 11 to 15 million in a 2 year cycle, not reaching even half of this feels like a financial failure overall.

MK11 launched with around 100 million PS4s already in consumers hands, not even counting the other platforms.

If it didn’t launch as a PS5 exclusive, and was also available on PS4 like SF6, that’s another story. But I’d be pretty surprised if the sales projections didn’t take into account that they were launching into a smaller console base to begin with.

Also, I doubt that the cost of MK11 was based on having to sell 15 million copies just to not lose money. The extra sales likely put them pretty far into profit, as the biggest expense for a game studio is salaries paid for development time.

It’s definitely reasonable to accept that Khaos Reigns wasn’t a big financial success, but there’s not much to indicate that MK1 itself was much more expensive to produce than its predecessors.

I wouldnt call a poll of 13k people the public.
Thats a pretty gross generalisation, also the poll is from 2016 at the height of mkx.

And as i said twitter is just a small insight, one avanue to look at, point was any time ed mentions shaolin monks in any capacity be it remaster or a sequal it is recieved well and tracks good like it does here:

100k+ people voted, still small compared to millions that phurchase but this and the sequal or remaster poll is much more representative then that 2016 poll.

You need to look at the circumstances of the present, would the public be super jazzed about a THIRD in a row mk fighting game, after 2 controversial releases that ended up abandond despite claming they will be supported for years and years to come?

The current optics of releasing an mk fighting game are not looking good.

Releasing an mksm like game would allow for a much needed change of pace. Becasue making another mk fighting game would be under the spotlight of past controversial releases with zero room for error.

the hippydeepadoo slow ass devolution of mk string system it's depressing and the worst part is, as the speed decreased so did the combo creatity
MKX will remain peak for the amount of leeway MK ever got in a game since UMK3/MK9
It baffling how we went for having characters so well designed in X and 9 overall to the atrocious things they did to sub-zero in MK11 and MK1 (release day).
God forbbid if we ever get a playstyle that it's poke and poke back, and mix all day

Bro your claim is that MK is the best selling Fighter right now. I'm telling you that isn't true and you're changing the qualifications.

MK sold 4 mil and it seems like things slowed down when people realized it's subpar. DBS0 is an arena FIGHTER. Ya think MK is outselling Smash? Probably doesn't matter to you cause that's a Platform FIGHTER. Lol. That's the definition of moving goalposts, fucking dweeb.

Yall can suck NRS cock all day, but your arguments are borderline teenage girl levels of toxic. Just speak in good faith, I double dawg dare ya.

To chime in:

I don't think Mortal Kombat 1 is a bad game, but I do think it's the lesser of the NetherRealm Studios developed Mortal Kombat games.

The base game launched about 6 months too early and was extremely overpriced at launch. The "Khaos Reigns" expansion was insanely overpriced for it's amount, and quality, of content. Realistically, the game could have been developed for last generation consoles as well.

Gameplay-wise, I'm not a fan of the Kameo Partner system, but I expected that as I've never cared for tag or assist fighters at all. I don't think Invasions is as bad as people make it out to be, but it absolutely does have design issues in the sense that so many nodes seem designed not to teach the player how to properly use their full toolkit for this game mode, but rather to simply frustrate the player in a negative way. And that can be insanely infuriating.

Needless to say, I decided to play this game completely casually and not competitively at all.

For the franchise and the next game, what I personally think is that Mortal Kombat needs to take a break as a whole. Let the franchise sit for 3-4 years before releasing the next title.

For said next title, while I'd love to see an action adventure game, I don't expect that'll be the case and since such would not be a "mainline" game, I don't believe it would do as well as others in this thread think.

For Mortal Kombat 13, what I'd like to see is:

  • Story-wise, treat Mortal Kombat 1 and it's expansion as it's own thing, like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Pick the Story up again at the end of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath and have Liu craft a new timeline.
  • Keep that timeline dark, gritty, and simple. No multiverse, no more timeline or time travel shenanigans after this start. Let's get some narrative consistency going. I generally liked the characters from the Alternate Timeline, so let's keep things similar to that, though perhaps mature them a little more. Simple plot lines, like a tournament or Outworld Civil War, would be fantastic.
  • No 3D era plotlines. Except for Kenshi, if you're going to have additional 3D era characters in the full, post-DLC roster, keep it to 2, max. Give us new characters, or at least newer characters, instead. And give us new, but simple, dark, and gritty, plot lines.
  • Gameplay-wise, give us complete characters. No Variations or Kameo Partners.
  • Keep the Super Metre simple, like it was in Mortal Kombat (2011) or Mortal Kombat XL.
  • Bring back neutral jump punches like they were in those 2 games.
  • No Run button. I never liked running in when it debuted in Mortal Kombat 3 and I didn't care for it in Mortal Kombat XL.
  • Bring back a proper Krypt.
  • The Story Mode structure we currently have is a big seller to casuals, so it's not going anywhere. Do not bring back 3D-era style Konquest Mode, and nix Invasions.
  • Modern features as others are requesting are a must at launch.
  • I don't need to play dress up, give me a simple skin system (like in _Mortal Kombat XL), and let me select the skin I want to use on Character Select. I'd say tone down/nix microtransactions, but that's not going to happen.

Watching Ninjakilla have to go from the not mortal 5x iAFB corner combos in MKX to the lame as hell F4 Double Bicycle Kick version of Liu Kang in MK11 was one of the most depressing things ever about that game.

This is the kind of response you expect from a mature, honest, good faith interlocutor. Totally.

The latest Smash came out in 2018. I don't think it has anything to do with what did and didn't sell well in 2024.
