The Problems with the game industry (Part II)

Last thread has hit the fan.

Apparently it's beyond recovering, feel free to continue the discussion here (authorized by mods) as you see fit.

Carry on...

China about to drop another hit, with Ballad of Antara

It's obviously a souls like game, but it has some interesting design elements, might be worth checking it out, specially the character switching mechanic?

That wasn't it
Sorry, I must be conflating another thread then.

Speaking of ballad of antara, there was another souls like game set in japan that looked pretty similar to this but I cant for the life of me remember the name. Kind of a mix of sekiro, nioh and ghost of tsushima

There's a been a lot said about this game Concord(I didn't even hear about it before this but I'm not a Sony guy), but if the budget for your game is actually 400 million dollars then maybe you are far over your head. The original thread had comments about these bloated budgets and yeah I see a major issue being that these companies(movies as well as games) are way to willing to make games with massive budgets on the hope that they get the game that sells like hotcakes. Having to make hundreds of millions of dollars on your game for it to be a success seems like a bad business model.

But I think gaming is in a great spot in general, it's mostly multiplatform Triple AAA games that are having these issues. Perhaps the cost of producing these type of graphics and performance are too prohibitive.

There is no passion, there is no vision, there is no aggression, there is no fucking mindset

it's one of the reasons these games fails, execs think it's pouring money into something and magically will sell, that's not it at all.

For example the main problem with Ass Creed Shadows, if we remove the weird imersion right, the AI is so dumb it's hilarious.

Like Naoe can erase candles and guards don't investigate, they can't see shit either, and she has multiple ways to kill them without good counters.

It's also one of the reasons why Shinobido Imashime will still solidify itself as one of the greatest Ninja games ever, the moment the AI ninja entered the game later on, everything you did to others could be done to you, even dificulty to spot another ninja from a mile away.

Concord has to be the biggest blunder & flop I’ve seen in a long time. Why come out with a hero arena shooter for $40 or whatever it was when just about every other game in that genre is free to play? And are much better and more well established. It never made any sense, and was destined for failure. Seriously, why would I pay $40 when I can get a better version for free? Please make it make sense

they were calling it "the future of playstation" also no one were allowed to criticize the game during the production.

toxic positivity killed them.

Honestly the thing that annoyed me was all the developers having a colossal pity party for themselves when they had 400 million and a long development cycle and made the biggest gaming failure basically ever. There could be issues higher up the chain but it sounds like there is a lot of people in that company who were woefully unqualified.

The leaks from social media stuff from people involved paints them as sheltered spoilt babies.

Ubisoft Nukes themselves to the ground by disrespecting japanese ppl further with this one.
Removed themselves from TGS 2024 as Sucker Punch comes back and ends ubisoft and assassin's creed shadows career by revealing ghost of Yotei

The only disrespect they did was one gate design was one gate design which they have since corrected? Are you really buying into Racist talking points about Yasuke lmao. Come on man

If only this meant they would delay it to make a more polished game and actually consult with actual experts, but at this point, they're just delaying the inevitable, time to dodge TGS all together after the Nagasaki Tori Gate disaster

Yes I have, the Tori Gate has been the only real fuckup. Everything else is in line with how Assassin's Creed handles historic figures.
The way they displayed weathers and writting and stolen art without even ask for permission as well? Wait, so they have been doing this for a long time?

Digital Foundry suspects 10th generation consoles will likely be priced in-line with the PlayStation 5 Pro.

For Sony, they speculate that they'll need to go the Xbox route next generation, and release an "entry" level console at a PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X price point, and then their primary console at the PlayStation 5 Pro price point.

Of course we'll see what happens in 2-4 years, depending when the generation actually starts.

Considering how few games I play these days, I think this might be the first generation that I actually skip consoles altogether. If it ever becomes "affordable" for me to buy or put together a PC that can play modern games, I would much rather do that instead. The PS5 is honestly a piece of soulless garbage, and I regret getting it around launch (I just really wanted to experience a Demon's Souls launch again, but even that didn't happen because no one could get a console to play on).

I mean, I pretty much play only PS4 games on the PS5 and what few PS5 games I actually play are typically also available on PS4 and their quality is usually sacrificed to be multi-generational. I also simply can't afford to pay for online services anymore, so if I want to play online, a PC game is the better choice for me now. Also, and this may seem minor, but the fact that you can't even set a background wallpaper anymore really irks me more than anything else, despite being such a small complaint. Just the fact that they force you to ingest an advertisement every time you turn on your system grosses me out.

Well, I meant to make a one-sentence post, but I guess I got a little carried away. I've been a lifelong fan of Playstation, and just like with the inevitable MK2, this might be the first time I skip out on it.

Setting your own background is coming. I don't know when the update is going to be available to everyone, but I'm in the beta and am making use of it.

Yeah, I don't like subscription services myself, so no Game Pass Core or Ultimate for me. I do all of my multiplayer on my old PC (getting a new PC this Spring).

I got my Xbox Series X in April 2022, and it was too soon. My Xbox One X still handles almost every game I play very well. Right now I'm playing:

  • Diablo IV
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
  • Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition
  • Gears 5
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
  • Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns
With the exception of Mortal Kombat 1, all of these games play great to at least good on last gen hardware.

This generation as a whole has been disappointing for several reasons. We'll see how the 10th gen actually shapes up. Digital Foundry's speculation could be completely wrong, right on the money, or everywhere in between.

What is Digital Foundry's speculation on the next generation?
