Really? I recall him being very well liked as a new character. He and Cassie. It was Jacquie and Kung Jin I recall being less well received.
MKX in general was a misfire, especially the kombat kids.
I'm confident they were trying something new. Keep in mind,
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon was meant to truly kill off most of the characters and the next game was going to feature a nearly all new roster. That obviously didn't happen, but seeing as how we still have many of the same key creatives as from the Midway days, I'm sure many of them are a little tired of rehashing the same characters over and over again.
I believe characters like Cassie, Takeda, Jin, and Jacqui were a test to see if they could have Sonya, Cage, Jax, and perhaps even Scorpion sit out a game or so, letting the developers explore new more new characters that had a connection to the old. Obviously that didn't fly, and thus why we have both or only the older gen in
Mortal Kombat 11.
We could have had a cool rivalry (or possible romance) between Frost and Takeda especially with Frost being so arrogant and hot-headed.
This is a very interesting idea. For Frost though, I think NetherRealm had already decided to go the more traditional villain route with her. In the
Mortal Kombat X comics, which were (are?) canon, she attempts to kill Cassie Cage. This is set roughly a few years before the game when the Kombat Kids were actually closer to being kids (as in the games they're actually young adults with years of real world experience. In the comics, they're younger and untried), and in-game, Frost tries to kill Hanzo quite quickly.
