1) One browse of tinder/Instagram etc. demonstrates that many many attractive women are happy to flaunt themselves in levels of undress far more extreme than MK9 characters just to get social media attention and followers. Just look at that Megan Thee Stallion Mileena shoot that was just recently officially endorsed! How come this is considered acceptable behaviour that many young women aim to emulate and aspire for but simple CGI characters in a brutally violent fantasy video game that aren’t ‘well dressed for winter’ are considered scandalous (and no I’m not asking for that in MK, just find it curious how many women love to flaunt themselves online nowadays more than ever but it’s suddenly frowned upon in western games)?
Human women have the luxury of bodily autonomy and thus complete governance over their own image. Choosing to express their sexuality via overtly sexual behaviour or revealing clothing is seizing ownership of it, which is both liberating and empowering in a society that gratuitously sexualises women and femininity itself. Basically, sexualising yourself of your own volition shifts the power dynamic away from those sexualising you without your consent.

Choice is not a factor when CGI women are involved as they are literally manufactured predominantly by and for men to cater to and embody their feminine ideals. Needlessly exploiting and commodifying female sexuality à la MK9 is abhorrent and reinforces tropes and beliefs that are damaging to women.

2) How come Sindel can get away with having her enormous breasts spill out in her new KL skin, not to mention that pvc and fishnet-wrapped incredibly-well rendered bottom of hers, which ok they’re selling her as a whorish villain now, but then actual inhuman characters whose faces have held no likeness to real women in the past, Mileena and Sheeva, are being made far more modest when one was previously a stop motion dragon lady doll and the other one’s face is half nosferatu shark monster? Just don’t see how it’s acceptable for the very human Sindel to be sexualised but not the actual beast-women instead?
Because Sindel's sexuality is an established aspect of her retconned persona and is showcased consistently in her Dominatrixesque dialogue.

Is there any logical reason for Sheeva, a highly respected queen renowned for her honour and fierce loyalty, to be in a mankini with enormous breasts on full display? No. None at all.

But doesn’t your explanation about Sindel contradict your first explanation that it’s about a woman seizing control of her own image as opposed to one created to be marketed to men for titillation?

Surely the new Sindel has been manufactured for the male audience as a sexual commodity and no amount of storyline justification can excuse that, otherwise why not do the same for Mileena who has been presented as overtly sexual in the past, but since she’s half vile tooth monster is surely less easy to classify as pure titillation and objectifying of women than the objectively attractive Sindel.

Incidentally I’d like to stress I’m not pro-titillation in MK, more so I’m questioning how healthy it is for girls to see all these women flaunting themselves online across social media so much these days, often with cosmetic work done and excessive camera filters, that in a number of cases I question is empowering in the first place and doesn’t instead stem from more deep rooted needs for the approval and desire of others, which then creates a cycle of this kind of behaviour from those who aim to emulate them and their online personas.

No, because unlike MK9 where the sexualisation is both ubiquitous and gratuitous, Sindel’s appearance aligns with that of the persona she projects.

Do you not see the difference between the baseless visual sexualisation of a character for the sake of pandering to male desires and the sexualisation of a character that openly talks about making men her consorts and telling them to kneel before her and submit? Sindel’s unabashed sexuality is very clearly rooted in her own self-liberation and empowerment and she utilises her sexuality as a form of asserting her power and dominance.

If you are reducing Sindel to nothing more than a sexual token for men to gaze at and enjoy then you clearly aren’t getting it. She switches the dynamic entirely and, again, wields her sexuality as her own tool of power on her own terms.

All this being said, her appearance is hardly sexualised at all compared to past iterations. She’s fully clothed and simply wears tops that compliment her breasts, and breasts are not inherently sexual.

Sindel chooses to embrace her sexuality and weaponise it, as opposed to it being something that is imposed on her by men to devalue and objectify. She reclaimed it and proudly brandishes it as an asset, not a liability, that can be used to further assert her power and dominance. It’s that simple.

Phew this is exactly the “hot potato” I didn’t want created and believe my perhaps clumsily-worded comments have been inferred as. I’ll try and break down my stance as simply as possible -

1) I believe men and women are truly equal, as should sexuality across the whole spectrum. Love and sex should be enjoyed by consenting adults entirely in equality with one another.

2) I think the costumes in MK9 are ridiculous and totally agree that honourable characters like Jade, Sonya and Kitana shouldn’t be dressed as swimsuit models or strippers for the sake of visual titillation.

3) The discussion stemmed from why couldn’t Mileena’s costume from Deception return all because of revealing too much breast, when I reiterated that Sindel shows off the same especially in her new KL skin. Both characters are also cut from the same cloth of ‘man eaters’, one literally, the other metaphorically. So surely Mileena's cleavage volume should only be subject to same scrutiny (or potential lack-of) as Sindel, especially when Mileena is a monster and can’t even be accused of taking advantage of a real woman’s image. As an aside I also brought up Sheeva as a reference to another character who’s now modestly dressed based upon her old attire dating back to 1995, but whilst not an evil femme fatale, she’s also of a primitive tribal warrior dragon race whose men only wear speedos, is it really fair to say what she can and can’t wear when everything about her and her people is open to pure speculative interpretation? Especially when she never existed as a real actress in the first place (and stemmed from the days when all other MK girls were actually very modestly dressed).

4) If a man is into being dominated, can’t a female character (one designed by men no less) ever be deemed as titillation for those who are into that? Anything sexual can be deemed as a sellable commodity for those who are sexually aroused by it. I’m sure there’s plenty of domination porn out there being produced by male-run studios irrespective of the dominating women on screen. I’m not saying there’s nothing powerful about Sindel as a character, what I’m saying is her KL skin undoubtedly appealed to many men for more than oldschool glowing eyes and probably had a lot of people enter the last KL just for that apprentice level skin.

5) I also don’t think that just because a woman promotes her own body across the internet which has become very very prevalent in modern Instagram culture, that it always stems from a healthy and empowering place. Which also leads to other girls following in their footsteps with similar desires to reconstruct their body in such a way to resemble these perfect Instagram stars. I was simply stating that just because any person has released something about themselves (be it man or woman), doesn’t necessary mean it’s always come from an empowered place and may indeed come from low self esteem or a desire to change what they look like in the mirror to what they feel will get them more widespread online appeal.

I certainly don’t wish to be having an argument on this or come across as a sexist bigot when that’s the exact opposite of my opinion, I’m just literally saying “why can’t MK11 do that for this character, when they’ve done it for that character who's got a similar persona and is far more facially attractive” and that I fully agree on not wanting to see the franchise return to being an interactive porn mag, or presenting a negative image of what women should be. I just feel there’s a lot of people on the internet who aren’t helping people have a healthy view of themselves because the person doing it doesn’t always have a healthy view of themselves in the first place either. Hope that makes sense and you’ve not taken offence to anything I’ve said :)

That leak is fake, any of them with exact skin packs or too vague are just nonsense. Think about all the leaks not mentioning “ow right after KP2, there’s a trailer coming announcing the movie skin pack with voices of Raiden, Johnny & Sonya”. Not Waddles, fake waddles, 4chan douches nor the guy who still buys DVDs. Not a single one! There’s not a source out there publicly leaking anything.

LOL!!! Intelligent people are those who didn't doubt DVD dude.

He was also right...again..about the MK movie.

That guy responding is the guy from the reddit thread who sae the screening.
I am talking about future DLC, nobody called anything beyond KP2. Not even him. So nobody’s being kept in the loop.

While we're in the middle of no-info period, why not talk respectfully this OT for a moment ;)

For me it's quite funny that it is talked about the sexualisation of ONLY women and no word of men.

Men create a video game with sexy women -> offensive (in general)

In the very same game we have sexy men (MK11 has Johnny, Jax, Kano, Liu and Rain shirtless or close to it; not sure if we can count Shao, Baraka, Kotal, Geras - let's do for the sake of Mileena and Sheeva) -> no prob with that (in general).

Seriously, does this subject have to come down to assumption that men create sexy women beceause of their unfulfilled desires?

Do men create sexy men because they wish they looked like that?

Perhaps - to some extent - yes, but come on.

If women created a game with sexy topless men, would it be offensive and inapropriate as well? And what about women creating sexy women? Would it be considered mainly in categories of their potential complexes?

I don't jerk off to Sindel's boobs and don't cry to my pillow that my body isn't like Liu's. It is only a goddamn video game.

Also, I wish to underline that feminism is about equality of men and women and not superiority of women.

A human being is attracted by beauty, regardless the sex/gender (I never know which word is accurate here since in my language it is one word) - it's nothing new and nothing strange. That is why we will still be having beautiful Jade and handsome Johnny. And nothing wrong with that - MK is a kind of game when I'd rather escape the reality by ripping someone's spine and have a world with dragons and six-armed creatures, and after shutting the game down I can be a nice guy with zero sadistic tendencies. I mean, in video games there is a lot of FICTION and this is what MK's main role is: for a moment players can forget about how shitty the real world can be. There are many more suited games which cope with real life issues. MK is not much more than a pint of grotesque violence and humor with a little bit of spice. At least for me :)

Given all of the above, I don't mind having skimpy costumes in MK (male or female) and also wouldn't mind if we didn't have them.
In my opinion MK11 has all these aspects quite balanced - there are 'normal' and 'sexy' outfits for both men and women, and adding a MK6 Mileena or borat Rain wouldn't change a thing.

Cheers!

I can’t believe I even have to say this but no, topless men with muscular bodies that accurately reflect their physicality is not the same as women having ridiculously oversized breasts that are disproportionate to their frames and wearing thongs, bandages or having fishnets being the only barrier between your eyes and their vulva (MK9 Mileena).

Men are the targeted consumer for video games because they are the overwhelming majority. Women are sexualised in said games because men are the ones generating the demand.

Men being topless is not a result of gratuitous sexualisation, but an indicator of their strength. You’re comparing apples and oranges. @ me when Erron Black is wearing a jockstrap with his ass cheeks exposed and then we can talk.

Women like the sexy costumes too. My wife was all about the MK9 costumes, doesn't fuck with the mk11 ones at all for the most part. Shit whenever women cosplay Jade, most of the time they cosplay MK9

Some women, yes. I’m not interested in women and I loved some of the outfits, too, but it doesn’t discount how ridiculous they are nor the problematic ideals that they represent.

I can get behind that ;) Imagine Jax with a flat ass, unacceptable.
I mean deadass, I just want sexy characters. I'm not interested in a flabby Kano. I'm 100% straight on the weekdays, but I'm all about MK11 Kano being absolutely ripped and oiled. The same should apply for the women imo.

Personally I hate most MK9 female outfits because they're just lazy and stupid looking in Sonya's case.
At the same time I'm not a fan of Erron's MKX Alternate either aka "dood where's my shirt?"
Nice display of physicality for a man that's known to shoot guns and do silly dropkick/slides.

There's nothing wrong with attractive male and female fanservice but have some creativity with it y'know?
And try to have it fit the core idea of the character (Deception Mileena) or just pass it off as a silly DLC skin (Summer Heat Kitana).

That's where I stand on the whole fanservice issue.

Also you must be out of your mind if you think the only things sexy on a guy are his cheeks and his package, if muscles didn't factor to a man's appeal then Bara wouldn't be a thing.

Some people just can't understand the difference between power fantasy and sexual fantasy.

Conan is the man every man wants to be.

His girlfriends are the women every man wants to sleep with.

Simple as that.

Conan is not dressed in just a loincloth in order to arouse me sexually, but to make me idolize him as the perfect alpha male.

This so much. She looked like a fucking stripper who is about to go to a bachelor party.

i really wish to see that old school digitized arts returning for MK12 by modern gaming technology. We can get ridoff same sized female fighters or all the same bodybuilder male fighters.

And THAT'S the outfit she wears all story mode demanding to be taken seriously at the start of the game and tearfully talking about casualties in war at the end of the game. The one where she's wearing a tank, shorts, shades and a hat is never seen in Story Mode lmao.
