Rain general discussion

It's not the point. I just think that it would be a bit forced and indeed 'politics' at the moment. And I don't feel like this 'change' is necessary for Rain or any other already existing kharacter. They want to introduce LGBT fighter - go ahead, create a new one - let it be original not only because of his/her sexual orientation but with moves, backstory and design! To be fair, I enjoyed Kung Jin in MKX, played him and couldn't care less if he is gay or not. I don't like him in the story, because the way NRS wrote him (this chapter when Kotal begs to be killed...) is a piece of garbage. However, I can accept that situation because it's brand new champion in the pool. In case you want to mess around with currently known fighters it just doesn't make sense for me at all.

Some excellent points you guys brought up here. Dunno, I would certainly hate if Rain would just end up being used for forced "wokeness" in MK.

At the end of the day I really am playing the game for FIGHTING and not discussing sexual identity politics, so it doesn't truuuly matter - however, I would love to have a strong, creative, fun to play as, charismatic male character who just happens to like other dudes - and sis, Kung Jin is anything BUT that to me. Its just another layer of flavour to the game - like when intros themselves were introduced. Just a little bonus :p

No one is forcing you to discuss this specific topic.
There's really nothing to "discuss" outside of a pure videogame-ish perspective in Rain.
But if people like to imagine Rain as a gay/bi, go on... who am I to judge?

But my point is still valid.
I hope that we will talk about how much Rain is fun and good in the game soon... really soon.

No, your point is not valid. There's nothing more to say about his gameplay at this point because we don't know frames or which moves are tournament. But we can discuss character in general which is what this thread is. There's potential for Aftermath 2.0 which might feature Rain as well. Personality, sexual orientation etc might be interesting for those interested in the story.

Dunno man, what I understand from your reply is that we are really different if you think that sexual orientations are interesting to define the character.
But as you already told me, I'm not forced to discuss to this specific topic so, bye.

I guess I'll throw my two cents in as a gay man.

I would not like Rain to officially be gay. Why? Because he wears purple extravagant clothing? That'd be obvious and...lame. With Kung Jin his sexuality wasnt his entire character but merely one half of why he didn't join the Shaolin and that was told in a very understated way

The fact that this has become a thing in MK is really unnecessary lol

  1. Its not our business who is gay or straight
  2. It should not impact the character at all
  3. If a character is gay or straight, there is no need to push it true dialogue or whatever.
  4. Just let MK be a game and let the character be characters
Its basically pushing politics and its getting stupid. Like we need a heroine now till the point that it makes no sense and classic characters look like shit.

srry for being off topic
Since when does sexuality have to do with politics? These are 2 separate things. Changing a character’s sexuality for the sake of them being gay is dumb. But if it’s revealed they are in the story mode or hinted at in dialogues between the characters I really don’t see the issue or the “politics” in it.

As a gay man what’s wrong with Rain being gay, extravagant and wearing purple? I don’t see the harm in it being “obvious”.

Anway, Rain looks amazing and his gameplay is really interesting. Personally I don’t like the masks he has though, I’m not really big on the masks in this game in general. I hope they get more creative with their gear pieces in the future.

Rain is bi. I will not listen to any arguments for I don't really care lol. <3

Sexuality isn't politics, y'all make it politics. Not everything is brought up because of "wokeness" y'all are mad aggy over them adding possible character depth to a character that's shown up in like...a handful of games as playable? If that? We all know damn well the older Mortal Kombats weren't all there with in-depth character development. Idgaf if you think every character from 2d / 3d era are "straight" They're gay now. Every single MK character....Sounds stupid af, right? Imagine seeing a huge group of people and saying "Each and every one of these people are straight and I refuse to believe otherwise because of....no real reason."

That's literally as stupid as me saying "I'm gay, so now every fictional character I see is gay idc." Dumb.

And let's not forget that when they revealed Kung Jin was gay, it was literally a "Blink and you'll miss it." situation in story. A developer quote tweeted someone confirming it because if they didn't you wouldn't noticed. Then in pre-match dialogues he'd have a couple where he told a female they "Weren't his type." But I think that was with Mileena and even then you could write it off as him not being interested cause of her teeth. Compared to Kano and Kung Lao where Kano has intros offering Skarlet his sausage and Skarlet says she'll suck Kung Lao dry. Or all the intros with Kitana where she talks about her relationship with Liu Kang.........so if I can sit through those intros y'all can sit through an intro of Rain flirting with a guy idc.

People wanna see themselves in these fictional characters. That's the beauty of having a universe as huge and diverse as Mortal Kombat, and you can tell that they're making it more and more diverse and great. Each game. They encourage people to see themselves in some of these characters.

And y'all know damn well NRS is hella diverse and inclusive behind the scenes, the people who work on these games. Not everyone who creates these games, and not everyone who plays these games, are straight. So y'all are gonna have to accept that not all of these characters are straight and that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so baby.

Y'all are forgetting who Rain is literally inspired by. Prince was an LGBT ICON and STILL IS. To this very day. Y'all are gonna look me in my eyes and tell me that a character completely inspired by Prince is hetero? Girl bye.

Mileena's Bi. Tanya's bi. That shit is canon lmao. Both of whom are 2d era and 3d era characters. So that "2d 3d era characters are straight" logic just flew out the window my guy. And that's that at the end of the day. Period.

Honestly, there are lots of MK characters that could be LGBT and I'mma list them just to make y'all mad cause I'm bored.

Kung Jin, canon gay.
Mileena, canon bi
Tanya, canon bi
Rain, bi
Noob Saibot, bi (His clone is his boyfriend.)
Frost, lesbian
Kano, bi (And his bar is a gay club and that's on that.)
Cassie Cage, bi
Sindel, bi cause y'all know she'll pull out the Edenian strap if she gotta cause she's a top 100%
Fujin, idk he kinda sus and I think he's cute so bi.

Y'all can argue amongst yourselves. MK be gay. It rhymes for a reason.

Different opinions obviously, you don't see the harm but to me the arrogant gay guy in purple is so on the nose and stereotypical it's almost offensive. Let Rain be his extra self not because he's gay but simply because he's Rain.

I don't care how handsome he is, making him gay all of a sudden just does nothing for him.
But by all means keep making gay Rain fanfics and fanart, I certainly don't mind that.

That may sound a bit stupid but... how the hell purple = gay? I mean, in my country, the stereotype is more like: pink = gay. But purple? is that something US common? or am I missing something? I thought purple colour in Rain's theme is 1) Prince tribute 2) royalty (purple + gold are royal insignia). Now the whole thing with talking about his orientation at the first place is kinda weird, so just stated my opinion, hope I didn't offend anyone as it wasn't my purpose at all. Still, there is only one thing that is actually tricky in his sexuality - his romance with Kitana in the past - I want to have that explored a bit more with the intros in Kitana, Liu and Jade :)

Kinda like:

Liu: who the hell are you?
Rain: I f*cked your girlfriend when you were not even born xD
Liu: <bicycle kick voice> WULULULULULU

MK was never about this crap. Being gay is ok lol no need to represent that in video games. I feel that since we have Osu16bit in NRS it’s becoming a thing.

it’s a bit like feminist that complain about muscular males being the heroes all the time and force strong female heroines in our throats. MK has too much of this crap now

I mean is it a stereotype when majority of the gay men actually are very self absorbed and shallow? I mean Grindr is literally where you find them the most.

MK was never about this crap. Being gay is ok lol no need to represent that in video games. I feel that since we have Osu16bit in NRS it’s becoming a thing.

If it’s okay why do you seem to have an issue with it being represented in video games? Kinda contradictory don’t you think? This has nothing to do with Stephanie Brownback. Times are changing, being LGBT is more and more becoming the norm in today’s society. That’s why there’s more representation in videogames, to teach people that it’s okay to not be hetero.

Also nothing wrong with feminism. You’re talking about Feminazi’s. Those are the ones complaining. I’m a feminist and I certainly don’t mind seeing muscular dudes. The thing is most feminists don’t like women being portrayed as weak. But let’s be real, no woman in MK is being portrayed as weak. They’re all strong and amazing (Except for Cassie and Jacqui, they can choke). I don’t see how MK has “too much of this crap”. Only in MKX we had Cassie being the protagonist. In MK11 it clearly was Liu Kang, Raiden and Kitana. So your point of it being “too much” can be thrown in the trash. Next.

I prefer to think of Rain as an arrogant but genuine canon asexual. He has no need for anyone else.

Now that's interesting to me. But that's the thing I like to think of him that way, some prefer to think of him as a raging stylish heterosexual (insert your "get bitches wet" reference here) and some like to think he's gay. These are all fine takes and shows how many different interpretations people can have on a character.

You're right people do want to see themselves in various characters (or they want to see specific sexualities that aren't their own) so when that's the case why should he have a hard canon explanation on his sexuality again? Why should anyone?

mook

Noob
It wouldn‘t bother me anyway, his sexuality has no bearing on why I like him as a character in a fighting game.

But saying he should be gay or bi just because Prince is doesn‘t really make sense. Rain isn‘t Prince in the MK universe, he‘s his own character. Just because Prince is a LGBT+ icon doesn‘t mean Rain is or has to be either.

The original gay pride flag had a purple stripe that represented "spirit", it and a couple other colors were removied and now it's just the current rainbow flag that we know and love.

In 2010, the color purple became used in a "Spirit Day" campaign started and held every year in October, to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ bullying.

That's why the color purple is signigicant to the LGBT community.

Stfu lmao. If we don't need gay representation in video games then I guess we don't need straight representation either. Genius idea. These character decisions go through Ed Boon, babe. So maybe point your musty finger at him and maybe not at Stephanie because she's...LGBT? Literally that's the only reason lol. And Mileena and Tanya were canon bi in MKX and that was before Stephanie came out publically and transitioned so idk what kinda low IQ point you're tryna make here.

Imagine saying LGBT doesn't need to be represented in video games. That statement alone tells me all I need to know about you lmao. And it's embarrassing.

Lol what the hell at that MK2 skin or did they just gave him Shang's rain outfit since it was already available to use?
Well here's hoping he gets UMK3 eventually. Isn't there a datamine that says he'll get his MK Annihilation skin too?

Still, this could mean that Mileena might get her MK2 and UMK3 outfits..so fingers crossed for that.
