Corrupted Shinnok

Final Boss
I just followed the story and I found it extremely interesting. Here are the things that I enjoyed the most:

Shang Tsung as an antihero. Him allying himself with Liu Kang, Raiden, Fujin and Nightwolf against Kronika was cool.

The Shinnok's Bone Temple scene when Revenant Sindel talked to Fujin and Shang Tsung. "Raiden's violence against our Lord will not go unavenged, Fujin. Prepare to pay for your brother's sins." and "I will enjoy feeding Lord Shinnok your soul."

A revamped Sheeva playing a big role in the story.

Shang Tsung resurrecting Sindel. I got to tell you, Sindel is the most beautiful female character in MK11, her face looks amazing. She looks even better than Cetrion.

The reunion between Sindel and Kitana. It was a touching moment.

The reunion between Sindel and Shao Kahn. It was absolutely badass. Yes, Sindel betraying Kitana and forming a power couple with Shao Kahn was awesome. The fact that Sindel was evil from the beginning and not because of Shao Kahn was intriguing.

The antihero Shang Tsung betraying the good side and becoming evil once again, helping Shao Kahn and Sindel.

Shang Tsung betraying Shao Kahn and Sindel and killing them. Alright, did the power couple really think that the sorcerer forgot about the MK9 events, when Shao Kahn killed Shang Tsung to empower Sindel? I just loved how Shang Tsung stopped being their lackey and got his revenge on them.

The fact that the evil characters were against each other. Shao Kahn and Sindel rebelled against Kronika and wanted all the power for themselves. Shang Tsung betrayed Shao Kahn and Sindel just like I said before and killed them. In the end, Shang Tsung defeated Kronika.

The fact that you got to play as the evil characters during the story: (player) Sindel against Kitana and (player) Shao Kahn against Cassie Cage and Johnny Cage are some examples.

Now...

I didn't like how Shao Kahn disrespected Shinnok before the fight with Cassie Cage. By the way, Shinnok lost to both Cassie Cage and Johnny Cage in MKX and now Shao Kahn defeated both Cassie and Johnny in consecutive battles... Not cool, but I guess that was some sort of revenge, remember that Shao Kahn died in MK9 because of Shinnok and Quan Chi.

I also didn't like that Cetrion and Kitana looked weak, but at least they made Sindel look strong, that was good. By the way, Kitana looks awful in MK11 and that's a shame, she was so beautiful in MKX.

That's it. As you can see, overall I enjoyed it. I hope Shinnok, Quan Chi and Mileena will return in the next game.

During the whole scene you can see that Quan Chi has his doubts. He brought Noob Saibot with him, and he was ready to fight before Quan Chi heard from Sindel that the spell worked.

----

However, in this new timeline Sindel was killed by Quan Chi. Why? It's not explained. There's something about Sindel "distracting" Shao Kahn. Lemme stop you right there.
  1. Why did Quan Chi care? Shouldn't he be busy in the Netherrealm, doing Shinnok's bidding? Or his own stuff, since he was always more of a lone wolf?
  2. How is Shao Kahn so distracted that Quan Chi has to kill Sindel? Were Shao Kahn and Sindel spending time in the park instead of invading realms?
  3. Why make it look like a suicide? Who was Quan Chi trying to fool? Shao Kahn?
Of course, this nullifies the spell of protection plot. So what, it was a lie made up by Quan Chi to prevent Shao Kahn from invading Earthrealm?? Was everyone on board to make Shao Kahn believe his wife killed herself?
Ok, so I really don't want to defend the whole Sindel thing, which I still don't like. (Even though the portrayal of her, from design to voice, is excellent. It's just not a take on the character I enjoy.) But you're missing the obvious here. Shinnok is Kronika's son. Kronika wants "balance", or rather, wants her two kids to never feel like one is the favorite and both always get the participation trophies they deserve. If Sindel is as powerful as Aftermath makes her out to be, then her marriage to Shao Khan poses major problems for that balance. Because Outworld could just crush everybody and one side wins. That isn't what Kronika wants. She's trying to ensure an outcome where there is endless war. Winners and losers are ok, as long as losers can bounce back, or new players can step in to take their place. But nobody can win the ultimate battle or it defeats her entire scheme.

Quan Chi killing Sindel makes perfect sense, given her characterization in Aftermath anyway, if you assume he did so following Shinnok's orders, and without being aware that Shinnok is just doing Momma's bidding. He's unwittingly being Kronika's pawn, by proxy.

Basically, if Sindel really is that powerful (and talk about coming out of left field, in MK9 she at least had the super saiyan Shang Tsung power-up), then her being married to Shao, who is already a crazy conqueror tilts the balance too far towards darkness and death. It's the reverse of Raiden beheading Shinnok, essentially. So Kronika demands that the couple be broken up. Cetrion can't just go in and whack one of them, as she's pretending to be a virtuous Elder God of Light and Life. So Shinnok pretends to have a master plan for conquering Outworld and/or Earthrealm by making the two realms war with each other and sends Quan off to do evil things, because evil. Quan Chi kills Sindel, completing his true task of breaking up the evil duo without realizing that was the point, and then uses her death to fuel the spell that protects Earthrealm. The spell is partly to cover his tracks, fueling the suicide idea, and partly to put an obstacle in Shao's way so that he'd have to jump through hoops to take Earthrealm. And all along the way Kronika gets her unending cycle of war and revenge.

My short critique of it is that it rectified the story mode feeling “too easy” in terms of the good guys winning. The DLC has a lot of good in it, but there are still glaring errors and inconsistencies that I blissfully ignore.

Super excited for the future of MK, but I remember thinking that when MKX was out that the next game would should an evil raiden and a whole outworld v earth realm where earth realm were the aggressors and instead we got timelines and a god of the gods who was the “gotcha!” Villain.

Basically, I’m keeping my expectations low, but was presently surprised by the DLC. I don’t think it validates the price, however.

So... my thoughts....

I guess they made a mistake at the very beginning of releasing DLCs by releasing Sindel's new BIO in November or smh.
Imagine IF we don't know that she is evil... That would be a big twist. Now her behaviour is more expected than snow in January (in my country ofc).
And the part that Shang is going to betray good guys - well, THAT'S NEW ekhm... No. And same thing with the part that godly-Liu predicts it...

To be honest, there is nothing in this story DLC that actually impressed me and nothing that really surprised me. Kinda fun was to actually beat some heroic asses with Shao/Sindel, but still some other characters are there just to be there and get themselves beaten up (Kollector, Erron, Baraka). Kotal is treated as a bitch 2nd time in a row, that's something, having in mind that he supposed to be one of the most powerful beings in the Outworld. Kitana is presented as naive crybaby instead of being a badass Kahn. Also the situation with breaking the legs of revenant Liu - does this make any sense? Can someone explain that to me?

Highlights of this expansion are definitely Fujin and Nightwolf. Of course the plot is not that ambitious and it's actually just simple walking around and ass-kicking, but still it's a good feeling to have Fujin into the spotlight that he deserved for ages.

And the funniest thing is that.... actually NOTHNIG happened, because we got this big 'REBOOT' button at the end xDDDD
Yea, no one really dies in Mortal Kombat but most important - no one really lives!

Anyway I see potential for MK12 being held actually in GKL times and being an ACTUAL tournament. But that would make roster a bit weird - how can we get there Scorpion and Sub-Zero? The posterboys of every MK? Ok, Sub-Zero is easy to be thrown - it can be another Kryomancer in the past. But Scorpion? HOW?
Different thing, which actually pleases me a bit, is that we finally can get rid of Cage family and the special forces shit - instead we will probably get to know the ancestor of Johnny with this green thing in the pocket. I'm also calling it now that we will get female Nightwolf next game.

Who else is still on the table? Edenians - that's for sure. They are long lasting and vital - Kitana, Jade, Rain, Tanya. Outworlders too - Kotal, Kollector, Dvorah, maybe even Erron and Ferra/Torr (other Ferra/Torr obviously), Goro, Sheeva, different Baraka, some other Reptile.

Ermac is a NO, as he was created far in the future. Same as Skarlet, Noob. All present humans (besides Liu but he shouldn't count) are a big NO too.

My opinion? That may actually work! Maybe I will sketch (or someone will/someone already did - I didn't read the whole thread yet) some analysis of potential inclusions to MK12 later on.

Peace out

There's no way we will have Mortal Kombat in the distant past without all the Klassic Kharacters. NRS wouldn't risk losing all that money.
With all the money they got with the previous games (and MK11), they should take that risk.

Sonya or Kano are not that much played in MK11, so a game without them won't necessarily be that bad (since they were in almost all games)

Retired forever; don’t ask for games.
Strictly my opinion:

Honestly, a person wouldn’t be missing much if they didn’t get the aftermath edition.

That aside, while there was cool shit in aftermath that I genuinely liked. Shang Tsung’s role in particular. Sheeva was pretty cool for once, too. Fujin being prevalent was great, too. Hell, I even though Liu Kang and Kung Lao got the best possible ending. But after that, everything else was just pispoor in terms of execution and story explanation imo.

But that doesn’t seem to matter, and none of this matters anymore anyway, plot-holes, retcons and all. MK is starting again after all. And who doesn’t want to see this start all over again (sarcasm intended)

I won’t end this on a sour note, I like this fresh start into uncharted territory the franchise has headed. Here’s hoping they don’t retcon something again in mk12, maybe they won’t but anything is possible at this point.

Also.. It kinda irks me in a way that the crown thing was made up as a cop out for the storyline expansion.

Rather than saying "How can we move the story forward?" its feels like they asked "Whats the easiest way to squeeze out another 3 hours and charge $40 bucks for it".

"Oh yeah the crown, lets just add in the fact that they'll need it to fix time"

At no point in the original story was this mentioned or even hinted at. Nobody was asking "but what about the crown" after the base game. The "good ending" in AM could have easily been a base story post credit scene and literally nothing would have changed.

The entire crown issue was just a vehicle to get an expansion out without having to put any real creative thought into where the franchise goes from here.

They could easily have a roster mix of characters which are

  • Klassics not from Earthrealm which age doesnt matter (Kitana,Reptile,Goro, etc.)
  • Great Kung Lao Era heroes which one could be a Sub-Zero ancestor
  • Vision/Dream excuses to bring in Scorpion like Joker in Injustice 2
Its totally doable to do a Mortal Kombat 0 and still have a shit ton of Klassic Kharacters.

As long Sub-Zero and Scorpion are in it its fine.

Am I the ONLY person that isn't so sexist that I was happy to actually see Kitana get the win over Shao Kahn without Liu Kang to do ALL of her fighting for her? She's 10,000 years old and trained as a warrior-assassin for most of it for fuck's sake. She shouldn't need a 20-something year old monk from Earth to be her savior. It was about time she finally got treated as something other than Outworld's Princess Peach to Kang's Mario. Of course they go right back to her being utterly naive and worthless but just ehhhh. I'm not saying this out of some feminist SJW bull. I'm a straight white male sadly. She's just my second favorite chatacter in the series and it was nice to see her do sonething other than get enslaved.

I also want Raiden to be back to his Thunder God status. It feels wrong what they did to him in this game.

“I'm a straight white male sadly.”

Being ashamed of yourself for race or gender or sexual orientation is a real thing that thousands of people go through. There are hardly any places where you are made to feel that. Please be more respectful and less insensitively unfunny.
This. @Bloodfang please keep your self-loathing to yourself. There is no need to perpetuate it by broadcasting it publicly like that.
