A lot of us who live here don’t understand it either. We don’t understand, how in 2020, in a time where just about any knowledge you could ever want or need is literally obtainable at your fingertips. Yet, we seem to have some of the most ignorant people in the world living here. And it’s not just innocent ignorance either. It’s purposeful, willful ignorance. People don’t want the facts, the statistics, the data, the logical reasoning, etc. Because they know that will contradict what they want to believe. They want to believe that this global pandemic is an overreaction. They want to believe that it’s not very serious, and only a threat to an insignificant number of people. They want to believe that we are already done with quarantining and self-isolation. But they know if they actually do the research, that it will prove their beliefs are baseless “wishes”. So, they believe if they say things often enough, and loud enough, maybe their beliefs will magically come true. They refuse to face reality on realities terms. Because reality might just dare to inconvenience them.

For The Walking Dead, I always wanted it to end where the survivors get to Canada or Mexico, only to find the outbreaks there were contained as well as the world over. Everywhere is fine save the US, which degenerated into what we've read in the comics/seen in the show because arrogance, entitlement, ignorance, and gun-loving nature of the culture.

I always thought that would have been sadly hillarious. Obviously that didn't happen with the comics, and can't with the show since we've seen Mexico in Fear the Walking Dead, but it's still funny to chuckle at.

America is built on the foundation of "Fuck you" and "I'll get mine on my own!" These were SUPER important cultural foundations for the creation of the US as an independent nation and its stupidly fast expansion + growth. For example: The ideas of religious freedom and checks / balances in the government system stem from those cultural ideas because it means no one's allowed to force a religion down your throat Roman Catholic Church style nor is (was) a single person in government meant to be able to dictate everything. The problem is that those cultural mindsets are not conducive to an advanced society that's designed around helping its people. It also doesn't help that the US is inundated with "communism and socialism are literally 666 antichrist evil" which means anything presented as "big government" is totes evil (because the government being able to do something is clearly communism and/or socialism).

I don't think it will end until we can get people to stay home. That's what's so frustrating about these protests; they're protesting the things that will accomplish their goal the quickest. It's maddening.

I just saw a story on the "well that sucks" Reddit about a teen who jumped off a balcony on "mashed potatoes day" at school because he wanted to be the first to get mashed potatoes. He ended up breaking his legs and getting no potatoes. These people are like the potato boy. They're in such a hurry to get what they want that they're not considering the consequences of their actions and are going to end up much worse off in the long run.

If an idiot wants to behave in a way that goes against their self interest, great, they have that right. But where their rights end is when they begin to endanger other people with their stupidity.

Are you talking about the sleazy politicians utilizing this time to force militantly partisan ideas, the large corporations fueled by greed funneling funds from the stimulus package that was meant to be for small businesses, the crazies who are against ever taking the eventual vaccine, or the protestors who are actively making the epidemic worse which is going to simply extend the lockdown? That's what bothers me most about the protesters. Most of them are likely low risk, but their actions would put a lot of other people at risk. Staying at home isn't just about protecting yourself, it's about protecting others. Taking a couple months away from organized sports, happy hours, and haircuts is worth it to try and save lives.

It is so fucking depressing seeing people eat or smoke themselves to death, putting them at increased risks for horrifying illnesses like COVID, which is far far far less deadly to healthy people. That's not necessarily the people's fault, though. We're constantly bombarded by advertising and served insane portions. If you order a small drink at most fast food restaurants in the US, you receive a literal bucket of soda. You're also incentivized to order way more food than you need. Even foods marketed as healthy alternatives, like salads, contain more calories than you need over the course of several meals (once you factor in all the non-lettuce ingredients). Tack on all of the misleading marketing about health foods, protein bars, breakfast granola bars, etc, that are little more than candy bars in disguise, and it's no wonder the average American has no idea how to eat healthily.

It's also expensive as shit to eat healthy, unless you cook all of your own meals, which many people simply don't have the time or knowledge to do. Why spend the time and money buying ingredients, cooking food, then having to wash all the dishes when I can just run to McDonalds or Taco Bell and hit up the value menu? (rhetorical question; I don't eat fast food if I can avoid it.)

Before we expect the average American to take control of their weight, we really need to crack down on all of these other issues that contribute to the problem.

What's weird is there was a health craze back in the 80s. Seemed like almost everyone was working out.

And yeah, the last friend I had was someone I'd known since I was a kid, I'd drive him to the gym which he did work out but he refused to change his diet, probably a bigger factor than exercise. He would yell at me for even suggesting a diet or not drinking soda every week. Like dude, you have dementia in your family, you are scared of getting it, they're now finding out too much sugar can cause it and you still can't go a month without drinking sugar?

There was more to it besides his weight but it was a major factor in why we stopped being friends. I tried helping out a friend but you can only help those who want to be saved, and he was dragging me down with him.

Nobody can tell me they don't have 20-30 minutes of free time per day, because that's what it takes to cook. All the second paragraph of yours amounts to is laziness. There is a middle ground between mcdonalds and buying all organic and making everything from scratch. And said middle ground is much much healthier than the alternative. I will agree that the population is uneducated on nutrition as a whole, they don't understand macronutrients or basic things like calories in / calories out. I personally spend less money when I'm not eating out all the time.

Taking half an hour to learn how to read a food label goes a long way. It is a lifestyle that people absolutely need to make a conscious decision to abide by, but it is seriously getting out of hand. Individual responsibility has to be considered. The average woman weighs as much as the average man did in the 60s. That is horrifying and it is gonna be like WALL-E in like 100 years from now.

I'm not saying this to be a dickhead, as someone going into the healthcare field, as someone who used to be overweight, and as someone scared of the coronavirus and how deadly it is, especially to people with underlying and largely preventable health conditions, this is scary and depressing.

Food addiction is a very real thing man, it's sad. Diet is much more important than exercise but both are essential. If you are blessed enough to not be born with a debilitating health condition, you should maintain that as best as you can. Food addiction doesn't have the same social stigma behind other addictions despite it killing more people and leading to more disability than drugs and alcohol. People will go on crash diets starving themselves, then engorge themselves like crazy on a "cheat day". Nobody encourages an alcohol addict to go have a drink to reward themselves for being sober. In America, eating is just as much of a hobby as it is a source of nutrients.

It isn't easy, at first especially for sure man. People don't like to be uncomfortable.

Getting into working out is it's own thing because you have roided out genetic freaks on instagram taking pictures with perfect down lighting, an insane pump, and a wide lens camera to look like greek gods. Stuff like that can give people a pretty fucked up body image and discourage them from even wanting to try. Would definitely be nice if getting healthier and stronger in natural ways was more of a widespread image.

As a small business owner who was fucked over by the handling of the stimulus, I heartily agree with this sentiment. First, I was entitled to a $10,000 payment to keep my small business from going under. Then, at the last minute, it was changed to $1,000 per employee, which fucks over most small businesses. But then, all of the payments went to multi-million dollar corporations, depleting the fund before small businesses like mine could receive a penny.

Here in Ontario, they suspect we've now hit the peak of cases; that we're at the top of the curve. This is not confirmed yet, but they're optimistic. We're still getting over 500 new cases a day in the province, and their current goal is to reduce that to about 100 a day.

We're still in a State of Emergency until May 12th (and I suspect that'll be extended), and Emergency Orders have been extended until May 6th, which requires non-essential businesses to be closed, hydro prices to be cheaper, the ban on price gouging for products, etc.

I’d say a decent amount are people like my parents and sister who had zero say in the matter. I appreciate you for pointing out that I did specifically state "preventable", so that I don't have to. If anyone interpreted my posts as lumping everyone in one basket, that's not my intention. Being born with a pre-existing condition is out of your control, eating or smoking yourself to death is not. Plenty are inherited, some are autoimmune disorders, some chromosomal, but a lot are preventable. I hope your family stays safe dude!

My main point is how nice would it be if the population was able to rise above these preventable health issues so there would actually be enough supplies to treat people who were just dealt a bad hand?
