Honestly, I can't say I'm excited about whatever is next for MK's story. Only two games after MK9 and it's pretty much confirmed that we are already getting another reboot/reimagining/rewhatever. What's the point of MKX introducing the next generation if they were just going to throw it away after a couple games? And pretty much everything that happened during MK11's story doesn't matter because everything got reset. What little character building that happened there does not matter.
Between reboots after only a couple games and now full blown character backstory retcons with Sindel, it seems clear to me that NRS has no idea what to do with the series or is just so bored with it that they don't even care anymore and just tries to throw something together quickly.
I know the old games would also retcon things also, but they didn't have full blown cinematic story modes that tried to get you invested into the story like the new games do. It was mainly just bios and mostly non-canon arcade endings. With NRS' push for cinematic presentation and the story having more of a presence within their games, plus the fact that it's been decades since the original games, I kinda expect more at this point -- not to sound entitled. It's just really disappointing to me personally as a big fan of the series.
I'm also kinda worried about the movie may inspire whatever new game they do, and possibly being one of the reasons they decided to reboot AGAIN in the first place. If WB wanted Leatherface in MKX even though he wasn't very relevant, you know they will try hard to do cross-promotion between the movie and the game. Especially since MKX was supposed to do that but the movie was delayed. Remember the "we are going to sync-up the movie and the game" talks that was happening then?
Seriously, what if next game comes around and we have a completely new timeline that is inspired directly by the movie? And character backstories have been retconned again? Like holy fuck, no.
