Gaming Disorder is an official illness by WHO

Gaming Disorder

Gaming, music, poker, phone games, social media, smoking, drugs... ANYTHING can be a disorder when done in excess. When it takes a toll on the people closest to you. When you are streaming a game and your child is in the background crying/neglected (I have seen this myself). Unfortunately there are a lot of people in this scene who are delusional and justify their addiction by saying, "I am going to be a pro and top players tell me everyone can do it" Fact... most of those top players are scraping by. The same way people who smoke say it calms them down. This is truly only a hobby for 99.999999999999999% of people whether you like it or not. Most of you need an adult to tell you to get your ass back in school/trade.

I hope its not to late for most of you to realize this.

Addiction is addiction and like any addict you can only quit if you actually want to. This seems more like an attack on gaming than the problem itself. Like a “reason” to start making stupid laws.

Its a bit of both. A lot of people spew garbage saying they can "make a living in fighting games". Many people use the previous to justify their addiction.

TBH I think stuff like this needs to be said. Anything that makes it harder for people to pretend this isn't a legit problem.
Yes, it's the same for every kind of addiction, but I'm pretty sure people started taking all sorts of addictions more seriously once they were documented as such by health organizations.

anything that make you addicted to the point you start to negligence your real life .... is bad .... period ;)

Not sure you really understand what the world health organisation means by addition or what they define a disorder as.

Spending 8 hours a day playing WoW is NOT a disorder or an addiction. Drinking a 6 pack a day is not being an Alcoholic and having sex constantly is not being a nymphomaniac.

When they talk about disorders they are talking about how it effects your life, negatively. Someone playing 8 hours a day of MK11 and still holds down a job, pays rent, eats and exercises is not someone with an "addiction" or a "disorder". BUT.... someone that plays a game 4 hours a day but it destroys their marriage or they don't check on the baby ever or forgets to eat.. dose have a disorder. Someone that falls into depression or mania if they don't do a comfort task is also what they are talking about.

Addiction is a word people throw around but very few understand what it means and one of the things it means is that it is different for individuals. The thing is that addiction is NOT a logical thing being addicted doesn't mean "Oh I play a lot".

These two parts need to be highlighted.

It being a officially recognized disorder is good because people that actually do have an issue are able to get help. It’s not really an attack on gaming but enables people to be able to use & receive resources if they do have an issue.

This is nitpicky but there is no way you can play 8 hours a day and do all that stuff you mentioned, unless it is the weekend or your off work. That is unless you just never get sleep, which is super shit for your health and would definitely impact your life negatively whether you think it will or not.

Your main point still stands though, it is contextual.

Technically, it works.

Work from 8 to 5. Game from 5ish to 11, sleep from 11 to 7. That's what I usually do.

I am assuming you are single and dont have a wife/kids. If you have a wife and kids and still game that much it would most certainly be a problem. If you are just taking care of yourself it is just your choice if you want to game that much.

You're assuming I'm a lesbian, dude? XD

But yeah I am single with two cats lmao. I don't think it's a problem since I obviously hang out with friends and go for runs/biking during the weekend mostly. I think an addiction is something that really takes over your life completely.

There’s probably a growing gamer personality disorder too. So many of these younger kids, or even some adults, have horrendous social skills. I don’t mean being an introvert, I mean not understanding how humans interact with each other. So literally anything they see another human do is “cringe” to them.
I'm on disability as well :p

Except Jynx isn't wrong, so what's your point?
I didn’t say he was.

But where is the exercise though? That shit's important.

At the end of the day it's your life, do what you want. That's a lot of gaming but if you don't think it's negatively impacting your life than more power to you.

You're partially right, but you're very much oversimplifying.

The guy who has a family he takes care of but does cocaine so that he can go to work tomorrow, so he can get money to feed family and his cocaine habit, so that he can go to work tomorrow, so that he can get money to feed family and his cocaine habit...

There are MANY addicts in our society who do live this cycle and also have a family that they take care of and hide this side of their life from.

You can actually be addicted to something and not even partake. There is something called being "in recovery", but you'll never hear someone in recovery call themselves "recovered", they'll only ever say they're "recovering", and that's because the addiction is always there, even if they don't use, or partake in any way.
