Getting Ermac EVO Ready

Alright boys and girls, shit just got real. Mk will be at EVO 2012 and thus, so will I. Training for this event will be imperative if one plans to take evo and win it all.
First and foremost, who all is considering/for sure going? A list of my fellow macs would be nice.
Secondly, its time to level the shit outta ermac. I dont think we have found all his tech yet (his feints still intreagues me) but if we have found everything lets make him the hardest to read. We ALL have to change our style to become more unpredictable. Ermac is chalk full of mind games. Current patch match ups should be placed here, discoveries you want tested and confirmed can go here, anything that can help one of our Ermacs take the cake should go here.

We have a step ahead of everyone else because we are many.

Alright, this might help both of us, but what makes Ermac's bad match-ups? I know he has a weak wake-up game...but what are things that many Ermac players have trouble against?

I mostly have trouble against the rushdown characters (ie Kabal, KL, etc.) because of what was said before, his weak wake-ups and his "slowish" normals

its pretty much been said that ermac has bad a wakeup game but his lack of a low starter and only one uncomboable overhead is also a problem. Rushdown characters can often overwhelm ermac because he lacks and armored moves other than his xray. A character like nightwolf and even ermac himself, can cause a problem because he can zone and rush effectively. Only 3 or 4 of his combos can jail. 2 of them starting with b1.
I think you kinda get the gist. But as metz stated we have the tools to counter all of that. It depends on the player and his mu knowledge.
Anyone else have something to add?

CSZ has a 9 frame jab, and a 6 frame d3, beating most of Ermac's normals.

If I was to throw a bomb at your feet and went straight to a dive kick, most Ermac players would go for a TKP, but I would deal 2% damage with a dive kick, and the bomb would explode before Ermac recovers completely from the move, giving me another 8%, if I was to do it early enough, the bomb would explode before the second hit of the TKP, giving me more damage than the TKP.

If I am super ultra mega lucky, my bomb would freeze you, and I could go for a njp u4xxslide for around 35%.

u have done this to me before. But players needa learn spacing and need to read the opponent. After u set me up with this a couole times I learned f tkp and f jumping. Just walk away. Even a block dash works, (at some points). So what I learned from you is to walk past or away from the bomb, and if u try to shoot another ia teleport.

You bring up a good point many people forget...

DON'T JUST LEARN THE MATCHUP LEARN YOUR OPPONENT!

I rarely fight Ermac's that know how to deal with my bomb shenanigans.

The way the new jip works is that after a jip, the opponent is at frame disadvantage for only 12 frames.
Any move longer then this can actually be hit.

This explains why csz can do a parry after you jip.
I've know this for as long as the jip frame advantage was changed. I thought everyone else was aware of this as well.

This means that we need to be sneaky with our usage of b1.
After resets you should be able to get away with this.

Thanks Zaf, I did NOT know that a blocked JIP is +12. I'm fairly new to competitive MK, though not to competitive fighting games. Getting as much knowledge like this helps me level up very quickly. That definitely means that JIP to the 3,1,2 string is the safest overall bet - I also personally think its the best, on hit or block, because it sets up his whole pressure mindgame.

As has been mentioned, Ermac has trouble with pressure because of weak wakeup. That could just mean that the best way to deal with pressure is to wake up blocking - I play Guile in Street Fighter, so I'm very used to having to play patient defense. Obviously though, in this game, your opponent is building meter and you're getting chipped, so just blocking too much is ultimately bad.

Wakeups get 12 frames of invulnerability, right? With lift and push being 13 and 14 frames, that technically means that even when using them as a wakeup, you could be hit out of them. Honestly though, waking up with either of these, I've never actually been hit out yet. When someone is going to try and rush me down nonstop, I'll check them with wakeup lift.

I'm still working on this, but has anyone experimented with Option Select EX TKS/TKP as anti-crossup? The idea is to input the EX move and continue to hold block afterwards. Theoretically, if the opponent is already over you, the move has now been inputted "wrong" and won't come out, and you'll be blocking. Otherwise, you'll get the EX.

-31, 312 shenanigans
-Ending b114 with fireball = mind game
-Carefully timed NJPs
-Jumping back with Airblasts
-Poking with 121
-After ending a combo with TKS, you are guaranteed a whiffed teleport to get in. 99% of the time, this allows for a free grab.

Questions and hopes for Ermac:

-I believe tactics with his unblockable b2 may be explored. Most people with be able to interrupt it, so perhaps by only charging it half way, you could do the b2b1~lift = mind game

EX: Lift, jk~tele. Dash to them and charge the unblockable.
Nearly always poked, but you may use it for NORMAL b2b1 because EVERYONE expects the unblockable.
Or if you cancel it (or simply dash to them while theyre on the ground), you could fish out unsafe wakeups.

ermacs b2 should be a staple in every macs gameplay. His unblockable opens things up but the hardest hitting combos come from releasing b2 at 7% charge. For example, a jip and a partial charge of 3,5 or 7 percent will connect while 9% and the unblockable can be poked out of. Also his b2 to b1 yields more damage than b21f2. There is a partial vortex from what the guys have come up with 1,2 tele can connect. Im sure someone else could explain this a lil better tho, I dont really use it, but I might real soon..

F4 mixups can lead to unblockable hitting or a free throw.
Extkp in the corner is untechable (right) so you can get a semi unblockable loop in the corner.
