Sonya has a few strikes against her. Her personality is set to "permanently annoyed," to put it nicely, which some people find unappealing. She's a Special Forces character who relies on "mundane" tech, which some people find unappealing. And she's voiced by Ronda Rousey, which some people find unappealing.

And if that wasn't enough, she seems very little changed/improved from MK9. Compared to a lot of other characters, even including Jacqui, who have definitely improved.

I personally like Sonya as a story character, but I can see why others don't.

Sonya personality is stale and cheesy but she's meant to be taken more seriously compared to Jax for being higher in commandment of the special forces. When it comes to her moveset receiving little improvements that can be said to half the roster. Too much change of a character can lead into a lot of backlash and i'm sure that's not what NRS wants for one of there og characters. For example her leg grab, which I see them adding into MKXI at some point.
