Why nobody hates Kung Lao

Let’s see whose fire burns hotter
1. He has one of the coolest and most iconic weapons in the franchise not found in any other forms of media, and he wears it on his head. It was designed after Oddjob from the James Bond franchise, whom I have countless memories of 1-hit killing people as him in James Bond: Nightfire. I asked my super casual game friend who only plays Fortnite who her favourite MK character is and she said Kung Lao over Scorpion/Sub Zero/Raiden/Johnny Cage/Sonya/Kitana/Mileena. I asked why and she said it was mainly due to his weapon.

2. He represents the Shaolin. Why is this important? Because while the franchise has gone all over the place from militant Sonya to magical Ermac, there's nothing quite like the ancient martial arts and making them look bad ass by putting them into a videogame and combining them with other powers such as fireballs and teleports. What better way than by having a character doing one of the most stylish and show-offy martial arts in fast and furious, Shaolin style.

3. He's just a skilled warrior. He isn't Earthrealm's champion Liu Kang who won 4 tournaments, or Raiden's chosen one Johnny Cage blessed with god-like green powers. He is a pacifist trained under Bo Rai Cho, but proven highly skilled when he took out both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung in tournament (until Shao Kahn snapped his neck). I see myself as a Kung Lao, someone who wants to train hard under great fighters to become as skilled as the great fighters I look up to.

4. He has no quarrel with you.

He now has a quarrel with you.
You third point is mistaken.
Every MK character is a skilled warrior including Liu Kang, lol. He wasn’t made a champion by default, he beat his way. And this might be a secret for but it was intended that Kung Lao should win MK1 but he refused to compete because he knew the price of winning (neverending battle and unability to age) That means he could be the first champion. I like Lao but in the current timeline they turned him in a jealous boy who always wants to be better than Liu Kang ( who was also made an asshole in the new timeline).

It's a shame NetherRealms Software just couldn't keep Liu Kang as a generic good guy. I liked zombie Liu Kang in Deadly Alliance, but Revenant Liu Kang and and Emperor Liu Kang are meh.
You mean Deception and I hate both. Like, what the fuck? Those two idiots wouldn’t be able to kill him in DA and Raiden wouldn’t be able to put a scratch at Liu in MK9. He fucking destroyed Shao Kahn. NRS fucked up a lot of characters in terms of their behaviour and character. I’m not even touching Johnny’s anscestors bullshit they made up in MKX.

Hard disagree, Liu Kang as a generic good guy is forgettable and boring. He has nowhere to go as a character. On the other hand, Liu Kang as an arrogant champion who's bitter at the universe for screwing him out of the life he should have had, is dynamic. He has room to grow in all sorts of exciting directions.

He wasn’t boring at all. Every character is boring if Cage is in the game.

He's actually much cooler than Lui Kang. Much more original design and moveset. He was kind of scary when first introduced in MK2. He's become more a comedic sidekick lately. But I have no quarrel with him.

It's a weird narrative development. How did Liu end up in charge of The Netherrealm? It's bizarre. But let's go with it.

Really fucking hated Kung Lao for the first half of MKX to be frank. He's always been a character that I've tolerated but one that I don't like. I can see why people like him, but he was that character that ruined my day and he's kind of a dweeb. I remember back in MK9 I would root against Perfect Legend because he played Lao.
