About leaks, do they suck?

I have no idea what kind of pre-release marketing strategy NRS were going for this time around but the leaks have made me more excited for the game than NRS has

Although even if their marketing strategy was more hype, I'm never one to turn down a juicy leak. Sucks for them but it's great for me - it's on them to seal up that ship

Two of my favourite FGC YouTubers made really similar videos and it got me thinking about the impact of leaks. The issue that I want to bring up is that these guys are flown to events, most of us scrubs only have the internet to experience these things and when you are prominent members of this community, you're a YouTuber who will bring good press to these games, you have to be a bit biased. And that's fine, I get it, they have to think about their career and I respect that. I'm not saying both these guys aren't genuine in their reviews of games, for the most part, I feel Max is humble and he will tell it like it is, but there is still a bias there and their situation isn't like most of our situation.
Naw im on the same end of the spectrum and the way I read it is people are disapproving of the leaks because 1) they want a public forum to keep good ties to NRS saying "we were a good boy, please notice we didn't talk about leaks" and 2) it hurts their reaction video profits cause people will care less.

As someone who doesn't get privileged access to NRS stuff, and doesn't make reaction videos, I can confidently tell you, leaks are fine and they happen all the time. Every "name" coming out against the leaks, has a financial motivation to do so.

Who cares leaks instead of offical gameplay reveals? But i also hate superslow NRS reveals.

Honestly, I just think at this point NRS and everyone else with a big game that always have leaks, movies too. Movies I can understand more being secretive due to spoilers. But games, with something like this, modes, characters I don't get why at this point developers don't just let everything all out. I mean the storyline in games rarely gets spoiled if you notice, but rosters lol forget about it...

That being said, I am not a fan of leakers in regards to "please don't tell anyone" I mean it's obviously someone at NRS. If they find out they should be fired. Of course for us fans it's fun, though sometimes some of us do want to be surprised depending on the kind of fan you are.

Terrible times breed terrible things, my lord.
Yes and no. Only in this situation though because it a fucking video game.

Personally...
Yes it does only that I know how it works and the consequences that come along with it on a personal level. It truly can ruin your life. Just like a NDA, contracts, trade patents ect, when they are compromised or broken.

I've seen a few former colleagues on both ends of the spectrum. So I and like many others know how serious some business, companies and employers can be or adamant to enforce it. Which is kinda rare or not has often.

Even though Shit CAN GET REAL SERIOUS!!! If they go after the other business, company or parties.

On the other hand. This is a leak of a video game roster which is about to go gold and be released in 1 months time. So for fans on the outside were loving it. Even NRS could be like haha whatever IF!!! IF it's true. Has this could also just be part of their marketing hype or buzz to do such a thing as "leak" info like this. Companies do it all the time.

If it were true though then I kinda want example shown. Either negative or positive. Just to show if NRS cares one way or the other. But what would happen to the individuals who did it. I'm sure that'll be kept under wraps.

Untill that individual breaks nda and "leaks" what happened lol.

it certainly sucks for the devs and marketing team, i imagine they're bummed out. but this does happen with almost every NRS game, maybe it's time to tighten security so this shit doesn't happen anymore.

I think that verbal leaks are one thing, but visuals are another. It looks like a lot of fakes came out this week, so be careful.

Irregardless of if they "suck" or not, in this day and age every companies marketing team needs to be prepared to deal with them, and not just with "oh..uh...please pretend you didn't see that".

I get that a ton of work goes out the window, but the strategy needs to be adapted. Obviously the majority of your market will still never know, but things like the kombat kast are already targeted towards your diehards more than your casuals, so you might as well acknowledge it and go with the flow.

Maybe they had something cool planned that got blown up because of this, and that's a shame, but there's only so much you can do to stop it, so you'd better be ready for it.

Here's an example from myself:
Kombat Kasts are in middle of my sleep schedule. I did not care about Noob before at all. I actually hated him. So I planned to not wake up for his stream, and let's be real, they will spoil the character before showing it on Kombat Kast.
But, I'm a sucker for sickles. After seeing his design and weapon of choice, I will definitely wake up and watch his stream.

That would mean +1 viewer. And I dont think I'm alone in this case. Let's say +100 viewers more thought that way. And there are others that couldnt watch it because of work. That's a lot of people just from a picture. Get what I mean?

And, as an artist myself, I would like everyone to see the thing I'm producing, even if its under the name of a company. I would like to get myself criticised. But if I was an artist working at NRS, let's put all the hype behind for working behind a MK game, and think solely about what I'm talking about, I would be hella mad at my marketing team. I would want everyone to see the things we have done for the past 3 years, and so close to the launch too. Just show us, god damn it. But nah, instead, we get Kombat Kasts, which were fun in MKX days because there were a lot of info drops, but now we get barebones. I'm tired of their release schedule.

I like this leak exceptionally, because PND Mustard, whom I liked very much, basically said, end his career, calling him a prick. Like, what the f***? Who the hell do you think you are? Thanks for showing me your true personality. After that I de-followed him. He took it too far just because he wanted to lick NRS' shoes. I hate the words "licking shoes" or "crying", but its basically it. Miss me with that shit.

Max is the same as well. Why the hell did you cover SFV Season 1 DLC leaks then, if you are this considerate? I like Max a LOT. I watch his videos a lot. I love the dude a lot. But that video was the first video I ever disliked of his. It's so hypocritical.

TrueUnderDawg... I like his point. I get where he's coming from. But he's wrong. Especially the "cake" example was horribly wrong.

EDIT: Maybe TrueUnderDawg is not really wrong at all. I'm conflicted. I think its about personality. Some people like it, some people not. I think its easy as that, theres no reason to pry further, I think. But, like I said, I'm truly happy because I got to see that PND Mustard's awful tweet and stopped me from following him.

It's their product, whether fans like it or not I think NRS should be the ones to decide when and how to do their reveals.
Shame this is the truth. It's a company, like you said, and we cant decide what they want to do, even if it is horribly wrong. I just wish they would listen to their community instead of their god awful marketing team.

You don't think people who break contractual duties and who leak confidential information deserve to be ruined?

They do. But there are nicer ways to put it. "Prick" ? "End the dude's career" ? Those are strong words. He's acting like he leaked some government level secret. It is not. It's something that we will know in 2 months time. He's over-reacting just for nice guy points from NRS. I dont want to see that behaviour from a cool guy like him. Shame he showed that side of his, because I dont follow him anymore.

I'm sure in a perfect world, everyone would preorder and buy your game while knowing little to nothing about it. It is easier to sell someone their own imagination than a real world thing.

We are actually super lucky as a group to get to so often see so much of a game before launch. we often even get to play the games before they launch or see others do so.

It really should be that way with informed buyers, but It's not an accident you have to fight to find game trailers that actually show you the game or are offered to buy dlc before anything for a game has ever been shown at all.

Eh, but is that really true?

Every name is probably doing the Youtube thing for a living. Most of them only care about views, which is why you see so much clickbait titles. Oh, and unnecessarily long videos, where they're only rambling... all to get to that sweet sweet 10 minute mark in their videos. The more clicks and the more likes they get, the more money they get.

Here are the Youtube channels of Super and Honeybee. Look at how many more views their leak videos have compared to their regular ones:

I personally honestly do believe, that Youtubers, who refuse to dwell deeper into clearcut leaks like Maximilian and TrueUnderDawg did it... They do it, because they believe it's the right thing to do.
And that goes on to show what kind of people you're dealing with. If I was a content creator, I wouldn't have made a video on the clearcut screenshot leak either. It just doesn't feel right. (But that doesn't mean, that I dislike leaks. I've already stated, that I dislike the way NRS does the reveals and that I'm happy about all of the leaks - they give me more stuff to talk about with you guys.)

"nicer ways to put it"? I mean, I definitely see where you're coming from with the second part of this post but you act like the person who caused this leak is a friend of yours or something. LOL Is that the case?

While I would never leak something I'm all for leaks outside of story mode.
Tbh it's kinda ridiculous that we as consumers pay and pre-order a $60 plus product without a general idea of what kind of content it contains.

1) I say what I said, as someone who does Youtube for a living

2)

Once again, he's being open about it because he doesn't want to damage his relationship with NRS so he can continue to get stuff like privileged early access and free flights out to events etc etc etc.

Dude makes his living off reaction videos and shit like that, the reason he is taking a stance now is to protect his business relationship and salt that further reaction videos will take a hit.

Max is out there to generate $$$ and nothing else, never confuse it for anything else. He does all the laziest shit possible like fake rage and reaction videos. Maybe back in the Marvel 3 launch days he was a great content creator, those days are long, long, long gone.

it depends on the category of leak, the game, and how the game is being marketed. when it comes to fighters, like mk11, where we're being drip fed content every other week; I'm gonna love a leak. especially with mk where you can never know if your most requested character will make it in or they could be taken out from the previous game and given back to you as dlc. with leaks you almost get to know what you're getting into and plan accordingly
