Why nobody hates Kung Lao

The axe that clears the forest
I've personally never been a fan of Kung Lao. If he never appeared again in an MK game, I wouldn't miss him. There's just something about the way he plays that bores me to death. In both MK9 and MKX, if anyone played him (aside from Scar when he'd play Hat Trick), I would totally lose interest in the match.

I admire how consistent Kung Mao's been across his appearances. They really nailed it the first time.
I think one of the reasons his fanbase is so resolute--and his appearances so frequent--is because of that consistency. Authentic style, visual flair, fairly strong gameplay, the works.

This despite how daft "shaolin with oddjob cowboy hat" sounds on paper.

Lao is iconic. I miss him when he's not around. I think he's one of the few actually relatable characters in the MK universe, being a disciplined guy who works hard but comes up short and personality is pretty consistent across all the games as well. Imo he's also never had a bad design or unwarranted appearance in a game, so if he's made the cut in MK11 as the leaks suggest then it's probably for a good reason.

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
I have no issues with his character, even if he is almost always seen as the wanna be Liu Kang or his little buddy. I do however have an issue with his annoying moves in certain MK games though. If he missed a game, I wouldn't mind.

3. He's just a skilled warrior. He isn't Earthrealm's champion Liu Kang who won 4 tournaments, or Raiden's chosen one Johnny Cage blessed with god-like green powers. He is a pacifist trained under Bo Rai Cho, but proven highly skilled when he took out both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung in tournament (until Shao Kahn snapped his neck). I see myself as a Kung Lao, someone who wants to train hard under great fighters to become as skilled as the great fighters I look up to.
he is also a bit of a cocky sore loser who feels entitled to be the chosen one while he isnt, though.

Anyway, i can respect kung lao as a cool character though i absolutely never play him for more than one arcade ladder per game.

'ello baby, did you miss me?
Mask? But thats one badass picture. But i have always been biased towards lao.
Look closer, he's wearing a mask in that concept art. They said they wanted him to have the mask in-game in MKX "to hide his shame" but weren't able to do it for technical reasons.

Well he's more developed than Liu Kang and always had a fun play style in the games.

Without that hat though he'd look bland so it must be the hat:cool:

proud TERF!
I really hope he has an hat in which we can see his hair. Not digging that "scuba diving" look he has so far.

It has begun
I have always liked hus visual design and his theme, but the reason I hate him is because balance-wise he will naturally be a top tier character everytime due to his options.

Aimable projectiles, so mids, teleports with multiple followups, some leading to 40%+, fastest combo starting reversal in the game, can divekick you from anywhere and get a free conversion, good frames, good range, great chip, good staggers...

He really doesn't need all of that. His kit has always been way too loaded.

Kung Lao has been a balance nightmare since MK9

Also, Shoutout to anyone who played DA and he only had two special moves lul.

Design wise, Kung Lao is cool, and i do like the razor hat, as its pretty much what makes him iconic visually

Story and character wise, i do like the Liu Kang comparison of them being different sides of the same coin, and its pretty accurate tbh.

i fucking love Kung Lao, man wears a blade hat how can anyone not find this cool but i don't think he is more iconic than Scorpion or Sub-Zero. These two will always be a MUST in the Mortal Kombat games

I love Kung Lao and Liu Kang(username lol) In the new timeline(Specifically Mk9), they remind me a lot of Leonardo and Raphael, with Liu being less powerful, but less arrogant and more in control of his powers, while Kung Lao seems to be a better fighter, but is very emotional and has some edge.

It is better this way

Somewhat agree but I would say Leonardo is almost certainly a better fighter than Raphael, definitly more well rounded and versatile
