@HGTV Soapboxfan So I don't know if you are familiar with tag fighters, but your goal is to fit a character in a point/mid/anchor role. Point is your starter, operates really strong out the gate but does better with assists. Mid would have a great assist but maybe stronger with an assist like the point character. Your anchor is your last resort character, one who does REALLY well solo and can help you close out a match once you are down.

So Android 21 is great, because I'd argue she can fit into any of these roles. To keep it simple, let's make her point. So for your mid/anchor, a good fit is any character with a beam assist: an assist attack that is a beam that goes across the screen. They are great at full screen pressure and still help you combo. So you'd be looking at:

Goku Black, SSJ Goku, Tien, Gotenks, and some other characters I'm forgetting I'm sure. Android 21 (if you want to move her), Bardock, Yamcha and Vegeta also sort of fill this archetype, their assists function similarly to beams.

So for an anchor, this might not necessarily be the character that is "the best". It could also be the character you do the best with. If you maintain your sparking (the red power up thing), it's going to be hella strong for this final character, so you want it to be somebody you know you personally can do damage with. But in general, Android 16, Cell, Adult Gohan, Bardock, Tien, any Goku and any Vegeta are pretty decent in this slot.

Another good thing about tag games is you do have some flexibility in who you play. For example, I enjoy playing Frieza, who isn't that great comparatively. But my two other characters, Black and 21, can make up for his faults because they do really well in the roles they play for my team.

Bare in mind, this is all info based on the old patch, but most of it should be good. It might help if you check out the combo trials and see what characters feel good to you.
I am going through all of the combo trials for all of the characters now. I am familiar with general team composition rules just from watching tag fighters over the years so I am with you on how the whole composition works. To start I should probably pick something generic and the can specialize from there, so I am going to commit to playing 21, SSJ Goku, SSJ Vegeta, (maybe a more generic point since 21 seems complex with her move stealing and such?) for a week or two and then I can pick something more interesting.

Speaking of more interesting, I assume Frieza is an anchor typically? The golden frieza thing seems to make sense there? going off of pure aesthetics I could see myself eventually migrating to something similar to your team so I am sure I will have a lot of questions. Thank you very much

Frieza recently got buffed, for the golden form at least. So him having the bars for golden is actually more important now. Before the buff people hardly used the golden transformation bc it wasn’t really worth it.

Anyway, I started playing this game never before playing an anime game. After you get the basics, fundamentals, and basic bnb’s with your team, try and play as many matches as possible. You will lose a lot but you will learn after every match. The biggest problem is DBFZ doesn’t have the best netcode, so it can get pretty frustrating.

21 isn't that complicated actually, it's basically "you get a command grab, or you get a special you just took with the grab". For Frieza, I actually run him point, since he has low health and is really good at frustrating people. When he does get hit, it helps to be able to tag out to recover. And that team is fine, SSJ Vegeta is pretty standard everywhere and Goku is a good learning character

I have some offline training partners that are going to learn as well I think so at least I am not stuck with only online. I have heard the online experience is pretty questionable but it is what it is.

Gotcha. I think I need to just watch a lot of footage, I have only seen evo top 8 and various sonic fox vs Go1 sets thus far.

Hell yeah, that is undeniably the best way to learn. Especially when the netcode is subpar. Good luck man!

The only problem is that I am spoiled and online frustrates me even more than the usual player lol. But yeah offline training partners are the best

I’m prob in the minority here but I don’t think triple vegeta is as strong as I’d have wanted it to be. Ya the team has super flashy and awesome combos but you have to score those hits first. Doesn’t matter how often you switch, any assist for rekkas ends up being kind of shitty because both super geta and OGeta have low blockstun and zero lockdown. I’m speaking through the lens of an SSB vegeta player here of course....I think base vegeta would prob benefit more from a trunks or 16 assist as a mid, if you’re going to keep a vegeta shell in some way.

Yeah, already came to a similar conclusion unfortunately. Was waiting for someone else to leave a shit amongst the biscuits though :p

Tbh I figured it would be one of us to cry foul with bluegeta lol. The new training mode makes it even more apparent.

Edit: imo a shell like Ogeeta / Cell / Supergeeta would work well etc

Yeah those two work well together if you back them up with a beam/Yamcha/KBuu etc. But they def both want a lockdown assist in that 3rd slot.

Bardock is still fine lol. My main team of Growhan Bardy and Blue Goku are still [emoji108]

The teen Gohan “buffs” are nice from a QOL aspect too

Nice, any new tech hot takes for Tohan?

My teams have only gotten stronger thankfully :)

Team1 (Nappa/Yamcha/SSJVegeta) is pretty similar to my new team lol

Not really. Previously difficult bomb loops are easier to hit now bc of the hitbox buff. he’s otherwise the same: he does whatever the fuck he wants when you’re blocking lol
Oops there goes 60% of your life

Team1: Kid Gohan / Trunks / Ssj Vegeta

Team2: adult Gohan / Bardock / SSB Goku

Team 3: triple blue

Although I might take them out for Ogeeta / Trunks / Supergeeta...that team is awesome
