It's that time of the year again: EVOlution, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. After a successful debut in Japan, it is time for Mr. Wiz to announce the lineup for EVO classic. With some major excitement around games such as Dragonball FighterZ and Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, how is the NRS scene going to be represented this year on the main stage?

WITH MORTAL KOMBAT ARMAGEDDON! No, Injustice 2 is what is bringing us to EVOlution this year. With the SonicFox era ending last year giving way to the Age of the Dragon, things should be interesting. EVO is going to be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas from August 3-5. If you plan on going, you have 6 months to prepare, so get training!

EVO Lineup for 2018 (with some announcement notes):
Injustice 2
Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator 2 (receiving a new balance patch in March)
Dragonball FighterZ (with the Lead Producer entering the tourney)
Tekken 7
BlazBlue: Cross-Tag Battle (now announced to be delayed until June 5th in America)
Street Fighter V AE
Super Smash Bros. 4
Super Smash Bros. Melee

Can we talk about how Arcsys, the smallest portion of the FGC, has 3 games at EVO? I think that's pretty friggin' impressive, I love the support they always give. Was it 3 years ago when they threw in a $30,000 pot bonus for BlazBlue?
YES! That is frickin' awesome, especially for a game that's not even out yet! BUT what's even more impressive is that Smash Bros Melee still has ALOT of love for it to return! Thats CRAZY!

Upset that NRs still dosn't get a stadium slot for Sunday.... I mean it is an American company, wins fighting game of the year and a host of other awards and yet the biggest American event can not seem to give it any real love.

So Blue-Blaze is a strange choice. I mean the game is not even out.. and will only be out for 1 month. Dose anyone know if it is a world wide release or will Japan have more time?

I do not think you can argue against the numbers of Smash and Melee. Regardless of what some people think about those games they pull in HUGE numbers for sign ups and viewers. While I personally am not interested in those games and also think it kinda sucks they run both as to me they are kinda the same.. no one can argue that it makes financial sense as they both pull massive support.

All in all, I think this is a good line up. No KOF kinda sucks ... and I thought maybe Soul Cal would be out in time. When they said "it is not out yet" I was so sure it would be soul cal : (

BlazBlue will have like a week in Japan over the US. But Arcsys has shown more support for EVO than Capcom and NRS, so I don't blame EVO giving them a chance to get their game out. As for the Injustice Sunday slot, I don't blame them. It's popular enough to get in over Marvel, but it's not THAT popular, you know what I mean? Just from reading the air in the NRS scene, I think a lot of people are wanting MK11 now

Injustice only pulled like 46K viewers during finals last year. MKX did over 100k on its final EVO while people were calling it dead. I've not gotten the impression that casual viewers are all that taken with IJ2. I think it does OK, but it just doesn't feel like viewers feel the same way about it as MKX.

I say that but IJ2 was one day and MKX did play Sunday on the main stage to get that 100K, so maybe that was a factor.

I think how the GF went down for Injustice 1 and 2 didn't help. Not saying anyone did anything wrong, but F23Man and Trident Rush didn't exactly bring the hype

It's too laggy to poke...
I can't believe mvci didn't get in. Capcom bias was obvious in prior years and now this is a strong condemnation imo. With all their mistakes, it makes you appreciate nrs a little bit more... until you remember supergirl... fuck supergirl...

If Injustice was on Sunday it still would have had a ton of viewers -- that's just how FGC streaming works
Exactly.. simply being on the main stage brings so much exposure to the game and the NRS scene itself. 1000s would watch that probably would not normally tune in and the game would gain a lot of new players and this kind of thing snowballs. Putting things on the main stage, MAKES it more popular.

Zhi said after eLeauge that he never knew how skilled and how intense NRS games until he cast eLeuage Finals. In fact he has been defending the NRS scene ever since as he was so impressed by the gameplay and the hype.

Massive exposure to the FGC is what NRS needs to get to the next level in eSports and it just sucks that the biggest US Event doesn't support NRS at all really.

I will leave my seal on you!
IJ2 is only at Saturday again which sucks, that should be on Sunday after all of the awards it won and was nominated for. I don't care that last year in particular it didn't get as many views as MKX. Yes MKX is still the better game overall, but IJ2 is still a fantastic game and it should be on Sunday. I am glad that MVC:I didn't make the cut to the main line-up though, this proves that even EVO can't be too kind for Capcom when it's the right time. I just hope that IJ2 at least will go last on Saturday after all of the other games.

This also proves that Marvel and SF5 are still two separate communities at the core, which is what I've been saying all along to the people who question why the same NRS community doesn't equally support two games at once.
^This, 110% true.
