Possibility of Implementing Abilities Competitively?

I'm sure many of you have either seen people say (or yourselves said) that certain character's gear abilities should have been included in their base set. The reason for that being is that we would see these abilities used in a competitive setting rather than letting them go to waste in mere casual modes, as well as possibly making a character more viable overall.
The most recent example I can think of is from today, Red Hood's jammed gun throw. A few others that come to mind are Cyborg's teleport, Flash's tornado,Scarecrow's projectile, or ANY of Brainiac's gear moves. (Not saying these are the only, or best, examples. However they are gear moves that could help each character overall)

Possible Negatives: Now, being able to implement these abilities would force a lot more labbing to be done on how to defend against the abilities and many combinations thereof. This also of course means the unfortunate possibility of finding super broken combinations, maybe even game-breaking. It would also take far more time in tournament to customize each player's character to how he/she specifically plays them.

However, if gear abilities were to be implemented into a competitive setting, I have a possible solution that NRS could add:

  • At the character select screen, after characters are chosen, add the option to select the 1-2 extra abilities for the character. This way time consumption is minimized and the opponent can also see the other player's loadout. Doing this would allow extra abilities to be chosen quickly.
(the ability balance issue would have to be normalized once broken tech is found. A possible solution is making one of the two abilities that combine to be broken take up two gear spots so that both cannot be used at the same time)

Overall this could make INJ 2 more strategic as well as more fun to watch for everyone while each player can add a personal touch of swagger with the chosen abilities.

What do you guys think? Just throwing an idea out there for the future.

^Yeah, I haven't messed with them myself, but it sounds like a lot of the abilities weren't balanced for normal gameplay. Can't Superman get an unblockable Super?

No idea on that. I've just seen many players wish certain abilities were part of core move sets because they'd either help a character be viable or just plain look awesome. Figured I'd try to get a discussion going on a possible way of implementing the abilities. If some are that broken then they'd have to be balanced out.

Doctor Fate has a full-screen unavoidable unblockable move that prevents you from using meter. No Super, no MB moves, no MB Roll, no push-block.

There is no way to balance gear moves.

Holy fuck does he really??

as cool as it might be, it isn't likely. Now I would not be terribly surprised if some abilities are added to default novelists as a "buff" to lower tier characters.
This would be a great solution for some characters, lets hope at the very least something like this happens

No thanks, some of these abiites are insane:

Aquaman has an ability that ups his chip damage. It takes only one ability slot. Imagine trident rush pressure.
Superman has an unblockable super.
Catwoman's cat ability is a combo starter that is plus 115 on hit o_o
Dr Fates move to stop you using your super meter.

The list goes on...

god no. we don't need to give every character a teleport or a projectile. also ivy has a 9 frame half screen double hitting low that launches and is -4 on block. gear is only fun because of how broke all the gear is and if they tried to balance it then it will just become a gimmick like variations

Also I forgot to mention,

If this idea is even considered, NRS would have to give everyone the abilites straight up, instead of earning them through RNG loot. Otherwise it's impossible to be competitive when the game screws you from earning shit and you can't lab a specific ability.

What're you supposed to do? Lab it in the multiverse towers with the AI? :DOGE

What a wasted effort these "Gear" moves are. Competitively, they are useless since they are game breaking. However, some are not so game breaking and could be used as somewhat of a "Super Art" style selection. With proper balancing of these more "normal" Gear moves, they could be implemented for competitive play. They could either normalize or create new, more balanced Gear moves to fit into the slots. Selecting your special moves before a match is not new to fighting games. Street Fighter has done it with supers as well as a number of other lesser know fighting games which allow special move choices before a match.

I sincerely doubt it. I'm fairly certain Abilities weren't created with the competitive scene or balance in mind. And since you have to grind to unlock the abilities, it's impossible to expect everyone to have access to them in order to lab with or against them.

I think some of them may eventually become base moves as balance changes, but there's no way the full system will be balanced for competition.

It's a shame we won't see things like Captain Cold's little platforms in competition, because some of the coolest (no pun intended) new mechanics are gear moves.

OK let's just put this to rest for once and for all.

A. This would have to be community decided which just won't happen, period. People will think certain moves are over powered and want them out and others will think they are fine. Or vice versa. Nothing will ever be completely decided on. No question about it. Also TYM isn't the only NRS community.

B. Think of the TOs that actually run the tournaments. You're asking them to spend 100s of hours to possibly get abilities on 100s of different set ups. It's not feasible, competitive mode is in the game for a reason.

C. NRS did NOT intend for gear abilities to be used in a competitive nature, they would have to implement a system that allows abilities to be chosen while having the stats gear provides shut off. I'd rather they spend their time balancing the game or on new DLC characters. I'm sure most of the community would align with this thought as well.

I'm not against it exactly, but it's just not feasible. It's not intended either, so let's just use the abilities for casual fun like it was intended to be.

I didn't realize how absolutely broken some abilities are because I haven't unlocked them all yet myself o_o
So those absolutely would be an issue.

But like some have already mentioned, maybe the less broken ones will make it through somehow to the base set for characters.

@ImperatrixSindel those platforms would definitely be sick to see in competition

Brainiac can't hitcofirm anything into a special to launch for a bar, while he's grounded, unless you bounce cancel.
This is dumb, he needs at least that sky laser or something else that could launch when meterburned, everyone else does?

While the idea of the gear moves was to ultimately help you in match-ups where you get zoned out or whatever, yes they are mostly overpowered and would take way too much work to balance.

Bane can't MB for a launch either. He can't MB for anything other than a bit of damage.

Logistically I don't know how that would work. Each tourney set up would have to have every gear ability for every character unlocked. If there isn't a "buy all" option like the Krypt then that doesn't seem feasible
