The official Euro Kombat thread

@MsMiharo
Thanks for organizing it, and all the effort put into it.

Going forward, please take me off the list. All my games were super laggy, especially the last one vs Smascer and I genuinely believe the quality of playing goes down considerably when playing in laggy connections/rooms (e.g. try doing a d1 on a Lao teleport).
I will keep competitive play for offline :)

Thanks again and GGs everyone!

I think the overall organisation was fine and will get more fluid with time as the kinks are worked out.

As for the technical stuff, I can't comment as I don't know enough, but as an observer watching the stream it was annoying having to refresh every few matches. I'm not going to gripe about it though as I know you are aware if it and doing what you can to fix it.

As for the commentary, getting Taco involved was a great idea. There was a lot of down time between matches, so listening to some back and forth between the two of you made waiting for the fights more enjoyable. Getting other guests in future would be good too and help grow the scene. This weeks UltraChen Tuesday show touched on the topic. What will help grow the scene is having personalities that people tune in to follow. That means dynamic players as well as interesting commentary. Either way, going forward having two commentators will help.

Yeah having @rubmytaco as a co-commentator was great fun and I felt it helped out A LOT in terms of both commentating the matches (more knowledge) and in the downtime between matches. This would also allow me to compete as well if a slot needs to be filled.

I will keep looking over technical improvements but getting a good capture card is, as I've said, quite expensive. I've been thinking about maybe having an entry fee every once in a while (say every 3 months) and take 20% of the money and save it for a capture card. I really want the streaming quality to improve but I feel a kickstarter might be a far too slow way of doing it.

Or you could just set up a way to donate? I saw some thread about sending a johnny cage player to dreamhack (of all tournaments...). People are donating there even though it doesn't even affect them. I think there are more than a few people who would gladly donate some money to the euro kombat cause (as long as you keep doing this regularly).

I would honestly say that you should try doing this every 2 weeks and get someone to help you out with the organisation side of things. I would hapilly volunteer for that. Hell, I could even take over if you can't make it some weeks.

My only issue is that I work a lot and I work a lot of night shifts and that I don't have a schedule that's set in stone. Thus I can't promise something like "every two weeks" or "every other Saturday" since my life simply doesn't allow for it. I would however be open for the idea to have it more frequently. The monthly aspect was mostly to keep it manageable now at the start

I think if donations are going to a prize pool, people won't mind you taking a small percentage for costs and investments, so long as you're open about it.

i like the idea of EK and i want to participate there, i also would donate some $ for you to improve the stream, so if you set up a gofundme or something like that i believe there are a few others who would also donate a bit and you'll get that capture card in few weeks.

I understand. That's why I'm saying you should get some partners like me to pick up the slack when you can't. Of course everything would be streamed to your channel and uploaded to your youtube. I'm just saying..

Depending on times, I could possibly commentate in future if one of you couldn't. It would give me another incentive to learn things like frame data and matchups. I've got a couple of headsets, but I've never tested them on the PS4

If the stream is going over Capture Card i would recommend to use tools like skype / teamspeak for voice chat, there are better options :)

@MsMiharo as i was trying to you in the twitch chat, you dont need to keep going into the ps4s xmb to send invites (that seemed to be what kept making it crash)
just make a koth and have people join your session by going to your psn profile and selecting join game (ive been in private koths and have had tools jump in this way so no invites are needed)

less stream crashes would mean you wouldnt HAVE to shell out for a capture card and its a pretty simple solution.
(also if you have a smart phone you can use the ps app to send just normal messages so theres another way to stay out the xmb)

on the lag front, koth will always be lagger than 1v1, that the cross you will have to bear i guess
on the information front, TYM best place for that and if people cant follow it from here thats no one fault but there own.

also that you want to keep entrants at round the 16 mark and said you canceled 4 matches, maybe "backups" would be in order.
i for one watched near the whole stream to watch my friend irishmantis matches so if i knew there were matches being cut i would of jumped in to fill a spot just like id do if commentator was needed, sure theres others would feel the same

Good feedback. I genuinely had no idea you could join without an invite but as I said this is not (or should not) be what's causing the screen to go black. It is a known problem when streaming from the ps4 and happens across many games. It would however be less annoying for me and allow for a more seamless stream.

Don't know if anyone still watches this thread but I've been thinking about entry fees. Why? Simply because it would up the quality: Less people bailing and more "serious" contestants. The downside? Newer players might be less inclined to try it out.

I'm thinking something along the lines of 5-10 Euro. MAYBE I'd take a % of that, mainly because I invest 7-8 hrs a month on this and it'd be nice with a sort of reimbursement for that. The pot would be split between first, second and third place.

5€ entry = 80€ pot
MsMiharo = 10€
3rd place = 5€ (the entry fee basically)
2nd place = 15€
1st place = 50€

10€ entry = 160€ pot
MsMiharo = 20€
3rd place = 10€ (the entry fee basically)
2nd place = 30€
1st place = 100€

As you can see the prize pool would be quite decent for those who place higher up. I could also lower the % I take (this is just an example).

So what do you all think? Tagging some veterans who might be interested

Also next tournament we will try to stream only winners to save time and have less downtime. We'll see how it works out

if your going down the route of entry fee i feel you should maybe be stricter with peoples connections.
main reason i played in the one i did was because of the a rule of "ethernet cable or gtfo" and seeing as that went out the window and we have people with clown shoe connections jumping around all day i really wasnt to eager to play in one again...and that when it was free.

but it your gig so i see why you dont want to come off all lag nazi and put people off, me...i have no problem with fighting the good fight against these wireless bandits or wet sock for a modem users haha

also if your paying out 1st 2rd 3rd maybe go 60/30/10?

I was ok with the entry fee idea when we where playing the last tournament, but now I'm not so sure anymore.

Sometimes the game gets just too laggy to be considered even remotely playable (like my last match) or is impossible to connect (like firebreather vs Taco), and I have no idea about what a possible solution could be if this happens in a more serious tournament...it would be frustrating to lose money without a proper match I think.

I want to add that this problems don't seem related to the connection quality; Taco and Firebreather have a good connection and played each other without problems in the past...
