MKX's 'Restart Match' Option Kills Tournament HYPE

Justice

It's just a difference in what players consider as "hype". For the tournament player, it's all about the gameplay and strategy. For the non-tournament player, seeing fatalities or brutalities or even flashy kombos or specials that they haven't seen before is "hype". It's all good either way and one is not obligated to cater to the other.

I do think for top 8 at least though a match could be ended with a hype-inducing fatality. Not every round, just the last one to put a period on it.

for the growth and more so the hype of the game when players are on stream they should let the win pose and fatalities rock... off stream instant restart makes most sense..

It Top 8's at least TO's or streamers (ie Sp00ky) should warn competitors to let shit rock for stream and spectator hype...

Hopefully for EVO the Top 16 or 8 or whatever as the matches get like 50k viewers the players should let the fatalities and win poses rock there will be a lot of ppl in attendance and on stream that haven't seen them all ..

In the end the players in the match can say fuck it and go right in and that isnt wrong per se but it is in deed a hype killer...

in the long run nobody wants to see that over and over and also , it can take up to much time but i also i think its all situational .. sometimes , someone restarting the match hella quick to cut off a x-ray/fatality is hype cause you know they are like "okay lets get this shit started again" and it adds to the tenseness of the battle but sometimes letting the fatality rock can be hype as hell also.. for instance.. with all the Tanya hate @ CEO - DJT and MIT let the fatals rock and the crowd went ape shit.. .. truely amazing crowd hype.

As a player I will skip straight to rematch, but as a viewer, I wish players would let the X-Ray game win run out.

Totally sat on the fence here.

I get OP's point, actually.

Remember when Curbo babied (PL I think?) at MLG? What if PL just restarted the match before we even got to see that? Honestly, I think we just need babies back. That shit was fucking amazing. There's really nothing that compares to that sort of thing in MKX. Brutalities are great but.....

Get babied, bruh.

For tournament pools and casual play skipping all that stuff is actually recommended but like others before have stated I hope that future Top 8 matches will let the fatalities/xray/brutalities rock for the sake of HYPE.

Couldn't disagree more, the fast reset is one of MKx's best non gameplay things. Having a fast reset is vital for button checking and for players to keep that all important focus when on a streak. Less downtime is better.

I think it would be nice to have a lock out if brutalities and fatalities are playing... but I can understand players just wanting to get back in fast.. spesh if they are salty.

It's part of the appeal of mk to the spectator. As for not caring what the spectator thinks... if you like 10k plus prizes you had better care what they think. Nobody is paying because the players are good they're paying because people are watching. The more hype the better even if it's the pop from a fatal or xray finish. I personally hate when I know a brutality is coming and we get the quick restart.

At some point you were not part of the competitive scene. You were probably looking up things about the game just because you love mk and wanted to see more of it. Then you happened across footage of top level players in tournaments having these intense matches. It looked fast and challenging but also fun. People in the crowd are getting hype. The commentators are getting hype. Then the match finishes in a way that to you is spectacular. It could have been a baby, or a clutch xray, or now a brutality. What you saw was from start to finish awesome and you wanted to know more. It was the game you love at a level you've never seen before that. I was that kid at some point and so were most of us. Even if to us it's nothing or even if it's a small part of the hype I think it's important that it's there.

Nobody said it needed to go. The feature is fine in casuals, but in CEO top 8? What about Evo Top 8? Think about how anti-hype it is for people watching when someone wins with an x-ray or brutality and the animation is cut by a pause menu or Sony's blue system menu screen. Nobody goes to an event or watches a stream to watch pause menus.

Keep in mind too, and someone else in this thread said this as well, that the players are playing for thousands of dollars now in large part because of the people watching; those people who casually enjoy the game and love x-ray's, brutalities, fatalities, and all that. You are right that it is an awesome feature in casuals if you want to grind matches, but that is the polar opposite of "putting on a show" in a Top 8 finals setting.

Think about how upset people would have been in no brutalities or fatalities were shown at the initial fatal 8 tournament?

I tend to agree that the players probably should consider that as the scene grows it is less "hanging out" or w/e and in fact a "show"... they are basically getting paid for being entertaining and that should be considered. Still, until the stream audience is paying to watch it is really still amateur no matter how big the event is and so is more about players than the audience.

Some players like to go straight back in after a match. I agree it sucks to not be able to see the finishing stuff but you cant really regulate this at majors. You also cant regulate people unplugging their controllers real quick because players might be entered in many games and need to get to another match.

What I will say is people need to stop restarting when they havent even died yet. People do that in my local scene and have occasionally done it when they wouldnt even be dead! Players should at least stick it out until finish him or the brutality starts.

No. I don't get hype seeing fatalities over and over. But a super casual spectator will probably want to see the fatalities on stream

You would never be able to do this if you were standing at an arcade machine PERIOD. Also, what other game do you see people do this in? Street Fighter, MvC, Tekken, KIller Instinct? Even in KI you have to sit there during an opponent's long ass Ultra Combo if he doesnt finish it early. It should only be allowed by winner's discretion. If you dq'ed someone for it the whole point would be moot. It just turns the game into a glorified sparring session.

I agree, but for different reasons. Rushing into the next match like that is too quick and gives you no time to gain your composure and prepare for the next round. It only takes like 10 seconds to start the next match.

I absolutely haaaate waiting through fatalities. I never use them, I hate when my opponent uses them and I damn sure never want to see them on stream. Such a waste of time.
