What's new

YOMI and Hype...

Matix218

Get over here!
Here are three big problems to me:

1. Because the YOMI guys are considered the elite of the elite and they get to travel to so many tournaments, any tournament without them at it is going to be immediately considered not high level. We've seen this before, "But VSM isn't there! Does it really count?". Obviously this is BS, but people see it that way when they come to expect these top players to be at every tournament. This might be overall how YOMI hurts the scene more than anything else.

I mean hell, let's just say the YOMI bus breaks down very last minute and none of them can make it to EVO. Imagine that situation in your head. Now how viable of a tournament would EVO be to you? Would you still value it over Combo Breaker? CEO? Whether you admit it or not, I'm sure that you all would at least question it, and that's EVO... now imagine any tournament smaller than EVO... they would mean nothing.

2. Because the YOMI guys can travel to EVERY major, even if players step up to the plate and do better than YOMI players, they aren't going to get nearly as much recognition as them, unless they can do it at a good amount of majors.

I mean for example, look at Red Raptor. He placed really high at Combo Breaker, higher than almost all of the YOMI guys, but when people talk about top players, his name is almost never brought up. I swear I am 100% NOT fishing for props here, but I'm a great example too. Last time we saw me at a big major, I beat 2 people who are YOMI now (Slayer and REO), but if you were to ask people for a top 10 players list, I bet a ton of YOMI would both be on over 90% of lists and Red Raptor or I would be on less than 10%. I'm not saying that me or Red Raptor or whoever are better or worse than the YOMI guys right now, but the point is that players getting recognition is near impossible with the amount of exposure that these guys automatically get.

3. YOMI is creating an unrealistic standard for sponsorships in the NRS community. For anywhere even close to what they're offering these players, any other sponsor would ask the players to stream regularly, spread the brand somehow, or at least have a standard for placements which are all very normal things for sponsors. When those sponsors look at the scene and realize that it's impossible to compare to such an overly generous sponsor, they might decide that they can't come close to competing, and sponsor players from other games. Also the fact that literally nobody but Sonicfox can travel and consistently place next to YOMI at a good amount of majors means that no players that can only go to a few majors can get the exposure that might get them a sponsor.

Definitely willing to discuss any of these points.
Awesome post Chef

I agree with everything you said

Well if MIT gets 17th and 5 of top 8 is YOMI at Evo then yea because chances are he got knocked out by two training partners in YOMI who made top 8

If he loses in pools to a random and then loses again in top 32 to a non YOMI player then YOMI is top as a group but he isn't by himself
EVO is the most important tournament, but is still just a single event..with a format where luck is an important factor too. It shouldn't be considered too much.

If MIT regularly places well in every tournament, his EVO placement doesn't make a difference. He should still be considered a top player, one of the best for sure.

Hell, even if Sonixfox gets busted out in Pools at EVO he should still be considered the best NRS player, no doubt on that. One event doesn't change everything.

So in your eyes, if any of the YOMI players don't make top 8 at EVO they aren't a top player?

I don't think most people see it that way.
If they lose to YOMI members they are still top

If they lose to tyrant, bigboi etc then while they are very good they are not top

Just one event is like saying Super Bowl and Olympics are just one event and that all qualifiers leading up to those said events should be counted equal

Sonic fox could get 33rd and still be top

Djt as well

Some have far more proven track records and those have leniency like forever king at Evo last year w inj and Jupiter

REO Speed Wagon doesnt play, lol. Come on Nitti, the dude tested the game, was in texas the week the game came out to clean house, went to northwest majors, pretty much lived at claudes house for weeks, then after combo breaker went to zoofox's house then they very soon after went to yomi and have stayed there.

A direct quote from one of the Yomi guys when they were chilling at jaxels last week and I proposed that we all go see New York City since most were from out of town (the day you drove them to next level)

"yeah, it would be cool to not grind all day for once"

oh he plays. but he doesnt play 10-12 hours a day. thats what im trying to say

Totally new guy here. In fact this is my first post. Been playing MKX for a month or so. I play tons of other games but haven't played a fighting game in over a decade. I mean I played Injustice on story mode because it was free on PS4. I decided to pick up MKX after watching a YOMI stream. I've been playing it nonstop since in my free time. My wife is sick of hearing me bitch at my tv trying to execute run cancels(which I still cannot do for a damn. You guys that can are amazing to me and I really want to main Cassie, love how her combos look). My record is crap online, I can still execute only the most basic combos. But I'm loving playing this game everyday. And I wouldn't have even thought of it if it weren't for seeing that stream. I look forward to the ESL and YOMI and art/team spooky streams like I do my favorite tv shows every week. I get all excited rooting for Grr and his F/T. Seeing if Pokchop can beat pig with his own character. Anyone remember how salty Slayer was when FK jr. Beat him with Jason? Good times.

And I know I'm not the only one. Talk of fighting games and majors and MKX has dominated chat in other games I play(mmo's, shooters). People are coming in and part of the reason is you get to see high level gameplay weekly and aspire to it and enjoy it. Just like the NFL or any other competition. I was at a major event for Magic the gathering a few weeks back. We were all huddled in the corner between rounds watching TCW on my phone because I had the best connection and loving every minute of it.

The NWO vs. sting analogy is awesome. The '12 or whatever year it was Eagles is a good analogy too: sign all these free agents. Predict Super Bowl. Don't win. Until they do win a major.

So I think YOMI's a good thing. It's brought more people into the game/scene which should honestly be more "hype" than any rivalry.

Why are you so immature? LOL you brought so much negative energy to this thread. Everyone was making valid points.
LOL did you even read the thread? Sorry for treating a crybaby thread from someone who's notorious for shitting on people across the world while having 0 stake on it for what it is. But hey maybe he's right YOMI is killing the hype RIP competitive MKX never had chance to live.

This is a wonderful post and it single-handedly justifies YOMI's existance.

What, this is some of the worse logic I've seen. Going by this guys like Momochi, Chris G, Daigo, & others aren't top players because of a few bad majors. If no YOMI payers make Top 8 at EVO they're still top players, they just had one bad tournament.

They should keep doing what they are doing. I fail to see how a strong team that travels alot is a bad thing.
Great players playing daily with each others is a benefit for everyone i´d say. Would be great if more such teams would exist.

I also dont think it hurts the hype in general. It probably lessens it in some aspects but also raises it in others. I would even argue that overall its a hype+. Also even if a torunament top 8 is full of YOMIs they still all want to win individually in the first place. And as a viewer i couldnt care less about a "clantag" as long as i see great matches & nice plays. At least thats what is most important for me personally.
Beside that they are lots of ppls that are not YOMI and are as good as them or in the same skillrange.

Also i get the "scene rivarly" argument, even though its a non issue for me. But its not like all your scenes just disapeared cuz one guy from scene X is on team yomi. And in an YOMI DJT vs YOMI REO grandfinal wouldnt their scenes still chear for their guy repsectivly? Or did those guy now just lose were they are from cuz they joined a team? Well... maybe i have a different oppinion on these type of things :)

YOMI doesn't destroy the hype at tournaments, until the end, and even then it just lessens it. The matches are still great regardless, but when 7/8 people in winner's side of top 16 are a part of team YOMI, it essentially becomes the YOMI local.

Them having the same team tag isn't the issue, it's the fact that they're playing match ups we see too frequently; we see things like Slayer going from KJ to KL for KL mirrors against DJT or Forever King, to which, from a spectator's perspective, the match seems as if it's already over before it even started.

Then, because there are so many team kill matches during the finals, the competitors don't even seem focused beyond the level of their local despite being in the top 8 of a major.

I'm sure they're taking it seriously but it doesn't seem as if they're as focused as they would be in a non-team kill scenario; when they cut to player cams they're always laughing or talking with each other. It just doesn't promote the same competitive atmosphere we're accustomed to for the finals, and I feel that carries over to the stream viewers.

But like I said, the quality of the matches still remain the same, it's just the externals of the tournament that suffer. For casual viewers I'm sure it makes no difference, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I am more likely to start opening other tabs when I see a YOMI vs YOMI match, even if it's the grand finals.

That's the reality of the situation, though. There isn't anything wrong with YOMI as an organization; they decided to dedicate their time to the game, so they're reaping the benefits and they shouldn't be criticized for it.

However, I think the players of team YOMI need to recognize the reality of things: most people aren't in a position to be able to dedicate so much time to the game, even if they wanted to, and telling people that it's fine and they need to stop complaining and level up, is ignorant.

The truth is that it is fine, but they shouldn't be acting as if they are on an even playing field with anyone else that is not a part of team YOMI.

HOL UP Ya boy coolwhip trying to get that Freddy DLC back on tap by giving everybody EMP nightmares.

I live in Georgia about 50 miles away from YOMI in a shitty town where the only offline play I get is at the local GameStop where some dude plays Mileena that also browses TYM (I don't know your name bruh). Watching YOMI is the closest thing to a scene I have and I think it's shitty that they are constantly getting pooped on by Kappa and now you got people TYM, where they actually post, trying to break their balls. Like I said earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped caring about the community because of threads like this. If YOMI wasn't around, you'd just have people complaining that some teenager was bopping everybody and how they wished there was a team that could stop him.

Definitely willing to discuss any of these points.
I'd like to address these points, if I may:

1. People have done this "does it count" nonsense since MK9, YOMI has nothing to do with it. Hell, if Sonic Fox wasn't at a tournament I am sure people would say it doesn't count. People focus on trying to discredit people's wins instead of giving them props. This is a community wide issue, not a YOMI issue. I agree that YOMI adds fuel to the fire but the fire has been burning for quite a while. I also think Reno is a professional and probably has backup plans for getting his players where they need to go, so I doubt we will be seeing this happening often.

2. Again this is nothing new and nothing to do with YOMI. Showtime got top 8 with Reptile at one of the largest MK9 tournaments ever yet people didn't care as much as REO dominating every tournament. People rank those who do consistently well over those who do well once. It's true that the YOMI guys get out to more tournaments, but that is what sponsors are for lol. This point is disproven once again with SonicFox. People think he is one of the best because he has placed top 2 consistently, adding YOMI in front of his name would not change that. Ironically, most of the YOMI guys were considered top well before they joined YOMI. ForeverKing got out to most majors in Injustice and he was never sponsored. The only exception would probably be MIT and DJT, and even then people considered them top because they always did well at EVO.

3. They spread the brand by getting top 8 lol. It is impossible to watch any major and not see YOMI plastered everywhere in pools, top 16, and top 8. I also don't think they are scaring off other sponsors, and don't see how that would ever happen. Hitbox still supports Tyrant, MadCatz is looking to pickup more players. A lot of venues/tourneys still sponsor people(KIT and VGP come to mind). As long as sponsors see any positive in sponsoring a player, they wont stop because there are other sponsors in the market. The last point is also untrue as Canada guys like Honeybee and Biohazard have been to a lot of tournaments and they don't even live in the country. Not to bring up King again, but he made it to most majors in Injustice and had no sponsor. It is totally possible if you are dedicated/lucky enough.

TBH I don't think any of those are actual problems with YOMI and are more of community based problems that have been around for a long time. The only thing YOMI really hurts is scene rivalries/scene drama.

Well the issue is that those community problems ARE there, and while we saw it somewhat in the past, it was considerably less so. I mean sure, we saw some people saying if REO wasn't there it didn't count, but he wasn't at EVERY tournament, plus he was just one guy. Having 20 people going to EVERY major is a huge difference, and will take this minor community problem that we have to whole new levels of crappiness.

Also just fyi PL hasn't been in Fnatic for a long time lol.
