so im going through all of blood god's strings/knockdowns to see which totems are safe

on hit, basically every knockdown and d.4 will leave you safe enough to at least block a follow-up (d.4 loses to very fast attacks I think, but it's tight timing and riskier than its worth). 212 and throw give you the most advantage so i'd probably use those the most.

on block, you've got a lot less to work with but standing 4 and 114 are still there

everything else is very unsafe on block with two exceptions; Sweep is unsafe only vs very fast wakeups (mileena's roll won't punish but reptile's EX slide will) and EX sunstone's safety is depending on what the other person can do from what distance (assuming on block; it's a free totem regardless on hit)

i feel like sun scorch or whatever would be better if each level gave you a third of a bar and you only dropped one level

i.e at level 3, you burn scorch and you go down to level 2 but you get a third of a bar in return, so you can choose to reactivate it twice to get a whole bar. would prob be op though

hi everyone. this is my first time on the tym forums. i'm a veteran in the fgc and have been playing fighting games competitively since mvc2. although i missed out on mk9 because of umvc3, mkx got me hyped and so far i'm enjoying this game.

anyways, kotal kahn is awesome.

he has great footsies and normals. his movement speed is also above average. he also does great damage and has good mix ups. the only problem i see so far is that he suffers against heavy zoners.

So what does kotal kahn do against zoning?
from more than half screen away, aside from duck/block and inch forward, kotal kahn can also (in no order):

1. x-ray

its fast, tracks from anywhere and has start up armor. the drawback is that it takes 3 meters. kotal is meter dependent, and almost always, its better to save it for another use. just having the option to x-ray the opponent from full screen will make them respect you more. you can chose to x-ray them if you want, but you don't need to.

2. duck and whiff anti air grab

most projectiles in the game hits high and have some recovery. use that recovery to build some meter.

3. (ex) sunbeam

it can be hard to get out without a set up, but the sunbeam forces a reaction from the opponent. if you shine it on them, they'll most likely try to get in and rush you down, if you shine in on yourself to heal and duck, they'll most likely try to close some space and also try to rush you down

4. sword shake

against slower projectiles, you can time a sword shake to interrupt the second projectile. so far, i find this mildly useful vs sub zero's ice clones. it destroys his ice clone and also causes an unblockable. i also find this move useful vs characters that likes to play footsies right out of your reach (right outside df+2 range).

5. ex sword shake

i'm still theory testing this move but i've botched it a few times due to input error and getting this non-ex version. however, i did get it working once vs a thrown ice clone. the theory is use the first hit (swing) to armor thru the projectile and use the quake to hit the recovery of the zoner.

6. ex sword toss.

sometimes, you just gotta toss it out and show them you have a decent projectile too. a decent projectile that gives you hefty frame advantage and hits mid.

against anything closer than midscreen, zoning shouldn't be too big of a problem. kotal's normals have huge reach (f+1, b+1, f+2 b+3,2) and also his ex sword specials can armor through most projectiles. you can also use his deceptively good air normals from that range.

Hey guys! So I've been wondering what character do you guys think would be a good backup for Kotal Kahn? I'm all about character loyalty, but some of his matchups are atrocious.

I'm thinking of picking up Jax and Liu Kang, but that's just because I find them interesting. Execution is gonna take work though lol

Have you faced a good summoner quan chi?

unfortunately, not yet.

however, i would imagine the same strategy goes with other characters vs quan chi: corner him and rush him down.
That is if you can reach him. The consoles have the patch that gives his bat a cooldown, so I don't know how much that changes the fight. But pre patch, its almost near impossible to move against a good summoner quan chi. If you move you will either get hit by his ground projectile or the bat or even both and pushed back to the farthest side of the screen again.

In this situation kotal can't use any of his moves because they are so slow.

a lot of characters have trouble fighting quan chi, not just kotal.

just know that quan chi has a bad set of normals and has almost no options to escape the corner. don't be afraid of taking some damage trying to get in.

the cooldown period does makes his zoning game slightly weaker but thats fine as he also have a crazy vortex game.

What tips do you guys have for someone trying to learn Kotal? I decided to main him and have been practicing his meterless combos so far. I need to figure out how to improve overall with him (I went straight to War God cause he just seemed bad ass).

Yeah, I'm a Kano main who wants desperately to play this character despite all the salt in his thread. Killer Instinct Season 2 was the only other fighter I've ever played so I don't think I need to worry about who is top tier.

War God is the one I chose of the bat. Plus I've seen it in a tournament recently (Corn Alucard or something). I'm assuming it is the best. But after seeing the dmg buff potential of BloodGod I am thinking about switching. He actually seems simpler than using all the different WeaponAttacks he has for specials properly.

Just watch videos from tournamentplayers playing kotal like mr aqua, pnut, alucard.

Stop blocking the gunshots man. Neutral duck and inch forward. And i think f1b2xxdf2 is a better ender than uppercut.
Oh I know man it's just I gotta adjust when I'm online with lag, I go simple lol

But yeah getting used to ducking the shots again it's been a min. also I hate bringing it up cause it's a constant excuse but the delay is atrocious! XD

You don't think the tea bagging was necessary? How can you not? As soon as the words "Finish Him" were commanded tea bagging was necessary.

I suggest to play Blood God at first if you plan on maining Kotal. It'll teach you all his fundamentals and combos. Do that for a good long while and stick with it good or bad and really try to make BG good. Then pick up War God and you'll be pretty much badass.

Soul Scorch/Blood Totems have 5 less recovery frames

I think that shit just gave him new frame traps...
