General/Other - Liu Kang Liu Kang Dragon's Fire & Flame Fist General Discussion

Can someone explain how the f213 fireball cancel works? I thought I read somewhere he gets a free f44 from it? but f2 is faster than f4 so how can he not just rinse and repeat f213 cancels since it hits mid? I'm guessing I'm getting something stupidly wrong here haha

Fireball canceling is based on how much stamina meter so you cant just keep spamming it.

What play style or characters are you guys finding difficult for Liu? I have not gotten too many offline games in, but was having a hell of a time against a friend's Balanced Kenshi.

What I like to do against kenshi is get him to the corner where he has very limited options. His rising karma can be punished with d2 if they don't hit confirm it (there is probably a better punish out there but this works for now).

Once kenshi is knocked down b12 stuffs everything he can do including backdash. In the corner you can abuse his slower normals with f21 (I think without meter he can't do anything but take the f21 loop but more testing is required).

Getting in isn't too much of a problem because his tele fury can be punished with flying kick. I think his meterless damage is the biggest problem because he has the extra meter for armour which you need to look out for. If you think they're going for armour you can always just do b1.

Opening him up is a chore sometimes but I play flamefist and go for chip most of the time if I'm not zoning (which I usually don't because of reflect).

The matchup right now seems like Liu is at a slight advantage but maybe I just need to play better kenshis. Hope at this helps

@Phosferrax i didn't wanna go too off topic in the combo section.

Yea I'm liking his FF for matches against characters who the goal is to zone. After a buff one EX Fireball is massive chip damage, hits mid, and does 15% damage. That's got to be the best EX Projectile in the game.

In Dragon Fire are people mainly using his fireball cancel for pressure, escapes, or for zoning mixups?

Ex fireball actually hits high which is stupid. I feel like there isn't much point in using the ex fireball with the buff active because the buff fireballs already do nearly 3% on chip anyway. I think Cyber Kano's ex is better tbh because it's a true mid and is plus on block.

Way I look at it, Dragon's Fire is more about offense, and Flame Fist is for more defensive play. Fireball cancels are for pressure as f44 fb cancel on block is +2 and f213 fb cancel on block is a ridiculous +10 (at least). Maybe could be useful for baiting them out into jumping but I find their conditioned to try to jump to avoid the low fireball anyway.

In Dragon's Fire, if I get a knockdown I want to continue pressure, but it's the exact opposite in Flame Fist. Ex buff is great is FF as well because it recovers so fast and lasts longer. He farms meter from people blocking his fireballs anyway, and he doesn't need it for anything other than breakers.

Oh yea I got confused, I was thinking of Dragon's mid fireball. Yea I agree Cyber Kano's EX Knives is the best. Over 4% chip and destroys every wake up in the game. Man why would the make Liu's fireball high in his most zoning/defensive variation??? That would be like Cutthroat having mid knives and Cyber having high. Makes no sense at all.

What??? Wow that's insane. So in theory you could double fb cancel on block string for chip and meter since you'll have stamina and they can't do anything but block. And can also throw in his OH knockdown or low. I'm gonna try this out right now lol.

So I'm assuming that FF is like a traditional zoning variation that can excel at certain MU's while Dragon is more of the "base" variation?

I have no interest in Dualist though lol.

Yes I find that DF is the base variation, then against people that I don't want to be near like Commando Kano I'll go for FF.

And yes, Dualist is dog shit. Don't bother.

Cool thanks for all the help man. I have no idea how I overlooked Liu this entire time, but it's time to correct it. :coffee:

Beat SonicFox in a first to 100 and I have proof.
Liu should wipe those stupid tattoos off his face and change his stance to a more WATTAAAAA-ish stance.
And why the raising his knee towards himself when doing fireballs in Flame Fist? It looks nothing like a real martial arts stance, it just looks weak.

It should look like this:

Or maybe he could punch the air and a fireball shoots out of his punch. THAT WOULD BE SO TIGHT, HIRE ME NRS

Also his WATTAAAAAA's are a little weak this time. It just sounds like regular falsetto, not screaming enough.
The rest is cool.

I was getting sick of having to work too hard to get a win as Liu Kang (Flame Fist) against my sparring partner so I changed to Dragon Fire for the first time yesterday, and I can't believe how much easier things became. It's ridiculous, my games went from going pretty even 7-6 to total domination 14-1.
Like I almost felt like I was playing a dumb character even, he builds an insane amount of meter on block so u can throw out random shit more easily and just MB to not only be safe but also gain frame advantage (?).

Like is there even a reason to NOT use Dragon Fire variation as Liu Kang.

He's modelled after Jeet Kune Do Bruce Lee. Less flashy, useless knees in the air and whatnot. you want a shaolin doing all sorts of crazy shit with his hands and feet, then Kung Lao is your man.

speaking of, I'd love a yellow jumpsuit for Liu, even if Fei Long already has one in SF....

I think Liu Kang is the only Bruce Lee type character that does not have the yellow jumpsuit. Marhsall Law from Tekken and Jann Lee from Dead or Alive have one and as you say Fei Long has one too, but Liu Kang is different from them afterall. Would like to see that Firegod Liu Kang outfit make it as dlc though.

how many times can you cancel f213 fireball ? after the first one stamina bar goes red; and dash cancel is punishable right ?

If only his character select stance was his idle pose. Pretty much the only thing keeping me from playing him

No, I want him to be LESS flashy. No stupid face tattoos. And he still pulls up his leg and does a stance when he shoots the fireball, I just want it to look strong and not weak. Also if his fireballs came out of his fists he would just punch the air for the fireballs to come out. How RAW and not "flashy" is that?

And yeah everyone knows he's originally modeled after Bruce Lee. You gotta keep in mind they're trying to make him his own character and not just another Marshall Law or Fei Long. Though I personally would prefer a more raw martial artist "Bruce Lee" type character over the face tattoo dragon dude design.

Come up with a real argument dude.
