Blind speculation! Which variations look like poopoo??

Cassie- Missile variation seems sektorish, which was a mediocre mechanic.

Ermac- flight mode is either going to be amazing or awful. Either way it's going to have strong competition given that both other styles give him what seem like VERY strong options, especially for extending combos, and losing those means he's going to need to get damage some other way.

Erron- Bald arm seem really underwhelming? Normals are going to have to be very good to compete with two awesome zoning variations?

Johnny- I can't believe people think stunt double is the weak one. The options that gives him is stupid. I can't see A list actually being all that great unless dash cancels are disgusting again.

Reptile- regardless of how good invis is or isn't, the biggest problem I see is that since it's the ONLY change, it's going to be hard as hell to justify over the other two.

Sonya- I WANT counters to work, I really really do. I'm hoping like hell they don't make them shit. That said I can count on one hand the number of games that have effective counter moves.

Jax's machine gun special doesn't look so useful, and I haven't seen the rocket launcher yet either.

Im not as well versed in mk as I am capcom fighters, but didn't reptile get a slight damage buff when he was invisible? If so......the potential........oh the potential.

Yes, but the way I see it is like this:

Noxious- always has an effect, which can be boosted after a combo/knockdown, and is totally unsafe to upgrade otherwise. Will almost always give decent if not downright significant damage.

Flash- Given it looks to be the exact same, this is basically his "damage" option, as it'll probably mostly only be done mid combo, and then give him dumb damage off of low/no meter. Probably totally unsafe/worthless outside of combos barring a few niche punishes maybe?

Invis- Maybe can be done mid combo, but if not it's strictly worse (noxious at least has some effect before upgrade and flash can be mid combo, this would do nothing until after your first connection). It'll give you mixup potential sure (as long as he's got some way to open people up and not just mid/high strings) and probably some damage, but i'm not sure that's enough when the other two options appear to be MUCH safer and reliable. You're gambling that you 1. get a combo that lets you invis and 2. get a second combo because of the invis.

Since no other moves change at all for reptile I really don't see invis being an easy choice at all unless he's got some mechanic or mixup that really makes it worth it, and from what I recall it was good in MK9 but not that used.

The final nail to me is that if you told MK9 reptile mains they could keep invis, or swap it for flash/noxious, I really doubt they'd scream to keep it as is?

Rocket launcher is....basically a pallet swap of erron black's rifle shot from what i've seen (crouches down, fires straight, does damage?). I'm hoping there's more to it, or maybe those two plus arm shocks and ground pounds gives jax a zoning game?

Also I forgot- etheral or whatever mileena (extra teleport). It's a REALLY cool idea, and I love the potential, but it seems super punishable, and she gives up some really great options for a chance to maybe play mindgames. I'm hoping it's better than it seems.

No one used it in tournaments because it cost meter and Reptile had a ton of other attacks that became amazing with meter while invisibility was a flat buff and free 50/50's, which are both good but not better than a giant slow forceball or an armored dash.

It doesn't cost any meter now, so it's a meterless flat buff and free 50/50's.
He never had an armoured dash

Ex-dash was merely +5, not armored. Still I've seen it being used to extend chip setups post-forceball.
Also it looks like it takes forever to enter full invisibility without meter in MKX, so that's some concern.

Other than that I've recently seen a match between 16 bit and Nicolaaas (hopefully I got his name correctly) and my impression was that invisibility ended up being helpful there.
One concern though is that since Reptile doesn't seem to have other differences (?) between variations, lack of variation-specific tool from another variation will be obvious and felt early, so people will judge these moves strictly.

I share this exact sentiment. The basic problem with parries in fighting games tends to be that they don't have enough active frames. The dilemma that designers face is that if they give them more active frames, they tend to become OP very easily. As a result, the vast majority of parry moves end up being mediocre and not as good as they need to be to make the character competitive. (*cough* Joker *cough*)

Ethereal Mileena is gimmicky and the utility pales in comparison to a command grab or low projectile.

Mournful Kitana looks to be fairly weak compared to her other variations, it really just looks like a Jade shoutout.

Finally, as somebody stated previously Brawler Cassie looks to be pretty weak.
I think ethereal mileena is going to be good , because if she has setups where she throws the Sai down at your body at the end of a combo , and holds it for the invincibility , she could easily bait out a wakeup , reappear , and blow you up , resetting the circumstance. Or she could make you respect that and reappear for more pressure instantly , I think it's got good potential

4- Brawler Cassie. This one flys under the radar. The air grab is cool, but the rest? A blockable command grab? A "MMA grab" that does an extra 1%? Why anyone would use this over Spec Ops or Hollywood is beyond me, and as the game grows Brawler will die.
Since many elements have been adjusted for the final version, and the game has yet to release, I recant this part of my statement.


The rest still stands however.

More reasonable ones would be kotals totem variation,spectral erm. , and reptiles disappear variation ,it's pointless
