Blind speculation! Which variations look like poopoo??

People glossed over it too, but my calling for Rattlehead wasn't entirely facetious (I hope he will make an appearance here too, because I'd like him to go in depth about this point from his perspective) - audio cues make a difference. Learn to listen to what Reptile is doing, and not just watch him, and you'll find invisibility a lot easier to handle.

Thus far, I really haven't seen anything that shows me that Ferra/Torr is gonna be much of a threat. Even if all of his specials had armor, Sheeva had the same thing and look how she ended up.

IMO Reptile's invisibility and vanish should be projectile invincible on startup, and vanish one should give him a damage boost.

Other than just staying invisible for the take of being invisible will not be a game changing.

Why even play this version at all? Just pick Kenshi. Also, having only two "shadows" then you have to do a move to get them back again? Uh... no.

This variation will still be good because it's Cage, but that's it.

Well, the idea of kenshi with a nutpunch..

i never understood why they put invisibility in 2D fighting games. not like it's gonna fool anyone or anything
Guilty Gear & yes invis in 2D games is really strong which is why Chipp's invis has gotten nerfed. Hell the South Americans in UMKIII are probably laughing right now. I'm not even gonna touch the stuff I see being said about Soectral Ermac in this thread.

This thread is fucking terrible.
Yup

This works to an extent. Audio cues won't give away positioning all the time, and some of the things you'd want to use audio cues for (such as 50/50 mixups) will sometimes be too fast for you to actually detect.

What a day. What a lovely day.
I personally feel that the variations will be way more matchup specific than anyone seems to care to admit. You're obviously not going to use Deceptive Reptile against someone with a teleport or great zoning. Same with Spectral, while we don't know the full details of it yet, using it in the same instance probably wouldn't be the best of ideas. It's here that I think "variation loyalists" may suffer a bit.

I'm already thinking of strategies for Mileena. For example, Ravenous may suit my needs better in a MU where the opponent is more punishable and I want that extra damage.

Using Piercing against a more melee driven opponent (Ferra/Torr, Kotal) may give me just the edge I need to keep them away. And Ethereal... well, I pray for those characters with shitty wakeups.

You have to look at the big picture here. Naturally some variations will be better than others, it's an inherent flaw when designing a number of playstyles at this magnitude, but I think they will all have their worth in at least one MU.

Do people forget that Reptile can still block when he's fully invisible?
The point they're trying to make is that when Reptile blocks any attack he becomes visible again, so characters with tracking moves, easily spammed projectiles, etc. basically nullify his ability to turn invisible in the first place.

How much of that remains to be true in the case of MKX remains to be seen, however.

Yes but when you're saying characters with teleports are going to be a problem... when he can just block and punish is silly. And if they use a bar to make it safe, just so that they can see Reptile again then it's a small victory for Reptile.

2: raiden Thunder god: Lightning combos?? Over teleport and/or crazy orb traps that also might suck?? No spank you
Sounds like it's more about reverse mixups and chip rather than combos per se.

OT:
Totally not sold on both Sonya's gadget variations. Grenades look like nothing special when you keep in mind that it's MKX and everyone and their dog has something like that - without the need to reload. Honestly, that's the only problem because otherwise they don't look bad and having meterless wakeup reversal is nice.
Drone manipulations are slow, and you need 2-3 of them to use some of its functions.

Sonya's parry variation. Even under controlled circumstances they couldn't get her parries to work, and when they did it resulted in 10% damage and a hard(?) knockdown.
Parry is just a bonus. What looks like mixups from MS may end up way more practical than shiny 99f startup shit she has in other variations. Having a reversal won't hurt.

Agree on Warlock, we weren't shown anything good about him.

Try to fight Chipp from GG Xrd. Invisible character with several teleports, triple airdash/jump, ability to stick to a wall and sit there and still having some variety of reaching moves as well will make you mad quite soon. Bonus points for doing that on early version of the game, before invisibility nerfs.
Granted, MK is not b2b, partial invisibility is not as powerful and you can't block in the air, so...

Thus far, I really haven't seen anything that shows me that Ferra/Torr is gonna be much of a threat. Even if all of his specials had armor, Sheeva had the same thing and look how she ended up.
Sheeva only had it on Ex specials.

That's exactly the point. You can't get in? Knock opponent down, run to him and let him feel the might of your knee.
Granted, without reverse mixups of A-list and chip of FC he won't be as good as those once he's in, but what else can we really expect here?
