I am (well, was) a longtime hardcore Tekken fanatic. I've been playing since T3 and have always loved the game. Sadly, at this point, I'm really fucking tired of playing the same game over and over. 16bit said it a while back on a KTP... we've been playing the same game forever. The system has barely changed, and the changes are almost always to the juggle mechanics which, aside from damage, has very, very little impact on the actual gameplay experience.

I played a ton of Tekken Revolution and enjoyed it for a while, but at higher level I ended up hating how it effected the gameplay. Power Crush moves are essentially the same. The crush system was suppoosed to be the "make a read and counter" system of the game. But now Power Crush covers 2/3 options (highs and mids, losing only to lows).

The biggest problem is the negation of frame advantage. Frame advantage used to mean something in Tekken, but over the years its become less and less meaningful to the point where it barely means anything! Who cares about +3 when you can just power crush through the next attack? OK, so now the attacker can wait and try and bait your Power Crush and punish... and if he doesn't do one? Now he's out of your pressure for free and you've lost the advantage. It's a stupid mind game, and it comes from the fact that the game doesn't have airtight block strings.

People have told me, "Well, in SF4 you can just mash shoryuken!" Sure you can. But the difference is that that game has airtight block strings. I can gain advantage, then press that advantage with an uninterruptable blockstring. That makes all the difference in the world. In Tekken, lets say I'm +3. My fastest move is a jab, which now comparatively starts up in 7 frames. In TR, invincible moves gained their armor on frame 6. We'll see what Power Crush ends up being, but in that case, my frame advantage was utterly nullified because I do not get a REAL chance to ever mix someone up.

Anyways, regardless, I've been playing the same game for over a decade now, and with a ton of other spectacular options out there like Skullgirls, BBCP, and with MKX upcoming - like it or not, Ed Boon knows how to create fresh gameplay experiences! - there is zero reason for me to buy Tekken 7. It'll be the first Tekken since 3 that I'm going to likely skip. Even now, I play SF4 and MVC3 plenty, and have stopped playing TTT2 completely. =\

The other problem is that while I agree that the series needs less emphasis on oki - Tekken Revolution did this same thing - it really hurts certain characters who rely heavily on their oki game. The fact that catching someone backrolling now just resets into a standup instead of relaunching? For characters like my main Lili, that is a GIANT indirect nerf, since she relies so heavily on her oki. She was one of the weakest characters in TR because the engine simply didnt play to any of her strengths as a character.

I watched a ton of the gameplay videos, and its really just more of the same. Yup, there's Paul doing Paul moves. There's Asuka doing Asuka strings. There's some more flash, but its the same damn game we've been playing since forever. T4 was a huge success to me personally simply because it was willing to take risks and provide a fresh gameplay experience. None of the other games have succeeded on that level since.

This is so odd, people who don't really play Tekken says "It's pretty much the same things" people who do say "It's too much change, I don't like all of this new stuff".


I personally welcome all of these changes and I think the game looks great, and I'm going to play the shit out of it and MKX.
About a month ago I made a vow to myself that the only FGs I would play seriously would be MK, GG and KOF if a new one gets made. This game is making me seriously reconsider my stance because, TBH, I rediscovered how fun Tekken can be, as long as you dont take it to the extremes Tag 2 took it.

Is Tekken 7 an example of perhaps all 3-D fighters having plateaued at this point.

The way the characters move looks exactly the same as since Tekken 3! Sure the skins and backgrounds look nicer but its still that same stiff look when you see back dashes and the like. The same plasma effects on hit connections. The same way the characters float/bounce when they are being juggled.

It would be like taking Street Fighter 2 and redrawing and calling it Street Fighter 3 plus some extra characters. At least when they had multiple versions of Street Fighter 2 (World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighter, Super and Super Turbo), where the graphics were tweaked, mechanics were balanced, moves were added/removed, new characters came in, it was STILL Street Fighter 2 and not palmed off as Street Fighter 3 Champion Edition.

When you look at Street Fighter 1 >> 2 >> 3 >> 4, the games look RADICALLY different. The same with the MK series.

Would it really hurt to try something new? Build a totally new 3D game, or make it 2D like the characters look in SF X Tekken or even 2.5 like MK 9?

MK X looks really different from MK 9 with lots of different stuff. SF 5 will look totally different from SF 4.

Tekken just looks very recycled now.

I dunno, maybe I'm alone here, but I like that it doesn't look radically different.

All I wanted from T7 is some more refinement in the already-amazing system. Add moves to characters, change some properties to make others more useful, and pretty up the game for the next generation. If I want to play something radically different, I'll play another fighting game like Mortal Kombat. I think a potential downfall of the series could be trying to make it too different, just like SCV added enhanced moves, meter, and supers. I didn't want that, I just wanted more Soul Calibur. For me, if I want diversity, I'll play multiple games. I'm liking what I see so far, and I'm feeling very positive!

Tekken needs to get rid of its legacy curve. T4 did that and it sold very well. TTT 1 and T4 drastically outsold T5, T5:DR, T6, and TTT2. I don't mean make the game like T4 but a drastic change like that is what is needed.

While I don't disagree with the basic sentiment of Tekken desperately needing a reboot, there is literally NO evidence anywhere that this is true. T4 did not outsell vanilla T5. And the reason why TTT1 sold well cuz it was simply T3 (the best-selling Tekken) but with a tag system and brand-spanking new PS2 graphics. And T4 was reviled by a lot of the existing Tekken community because it was different. It's the reason why T5 ended up just being T3 with simplified T4 walls. And then T5 outsold T4. Let's not get revisionist here.


That all said, as someone that's been playing Tekken for damn-near 20 years, T7 is a letdown, currently. The new particle and slowdown effects are quite pretty, but the stage transitions are the same DOA-lite meh-ness from T6. The Bound system was replaced with the Knockaway system or whatever the hell it's gonna be called that functions damn-near the same. And I don't know what the movelists look like, but if characters are still rocking all the existing 150+ moves plus the several more that Namco always keep adding, this could potentially go over even worse than T6. Rage Arts add to the already BS T6 Rage system that few people ever liked. It's cool and flashy (albeit DOA-looking), but it's still gonna lead to BS victories if not tweaked. Power Crush is the only real innovation, and that's kinda sad. PLUS this shit is going to Japanese arcades first, which totally worked out for great console sales for T6 and TTT2

I really wanted T7 to be the "T4 that people actually like and attracts new blood". Instead T7 looks like T6-2. Which was T5-2. Which was T3-2

It doesn't need to be rebuilt.

A few big changes, fine tuning, and optimizations with each iteration is all I want, I don't want MK9 to MKX levels of tearing down and rebuilding.

Dont want to be off topic but I wanna ask this question anyways. In TTT2 or any other Tekken game starting from T5, you know how you are online and you have your PSN name under your character you are using, but when I am Offline and go in Arcade mode to fight the CPU I see names that ppl would use as their PSN ID under the characters name. Is that just a coencidence or is it something else?

Nah man, PS4 has some exclusives that I want and I want my PSN data to carry over for perks in game sequels.

Not too excited about Katarina, cannot wait to see what Nina is alike and so far loving Ling Xiayou's moveset
I'm hype for her because she's basically a character from an awesome anime I like.


Something about saucy ass-kicking latinas is appealing to me.

Tekken 7 is going to be a more defensive game. With the threat of power crush moves and supers, both of which should be highly punishable especially if power crush shares similarities to tekken revolution's invincible moves, then the attacker will have to bait and stop his pressure if there is any holes in his strings. I actually enjoyed tekken revolution with the obvious exception of the rpg elements, so I am not to freaked out about T7's changes and look forward to seeing more of the game.

Also, I better have Miguel.

When I first watched footage, I didn't really leap for joy at it. I'm glad there's another Tekken, but it looks too similar to the previous tekkens at first glance (and anyone without a tekken background or a weak tekken background is going to take one glance at the game to make judgements).

I do respect how conservative Harada is towards tekken. He and Ed boon are on completely different spectrums of fighting games when I look it. He doesn't do anything too drastic that could be game breaking, and always does plenty of testing to prevent bugs or issues before release. Looking back now, it's an amazing feat at how balanced TTT2 was. If you put the NRS team under the same project, I doubt they could have gotten the game 1/4th as balanced as the Namco team did. This is not a knock on NRS, its just really put the time in to make sure the project doesn't need any patches after the fact.

Of course, such conservative methods have their drawbacks (game isn't as fresh/to much testing leads to other scenes getting a head start). However, balance and well tested games is almost a rarety in this day and age and I respect the lengths the Namco team goes through to release a complete product (even if it does come of rehashed).

Finding out that they have 1/4 the budget of Tekken 5 is making me really worried now.

I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm getting even more SC:V vibes now. I really hope they can balance their budget and properly use their money. Hopefully the focus is on balance and online, but visuals and stuff are still so important. I'm very concerned for the project now. On a positive note though, Harada said that you could cancel the last hit of Paul's RA and instead keep it going as a combo, but no one in the location test seemed to figure that out. Very nifty.

Have you played TTT2's online? That shit is marvelous, and I damn near never have any problems with it.

They've clearly learned from T6 and they've already proved it.

Online won't be a thing to worry about.

I don't think they need that much of a budget to make a solid Tekken game, tbh, they aren't even close to being finished yet and the game already looks more than good enough to ship.

I think the biggest problem with this game being just another iteration of the same game is that it is not going to draw any new blood. Is it ever a shock that the people playing at tournaments are basically the same people who I've been playing with for the last decade? This isn't a dig on the people, mind you - I love seeing all of my old friends at tournaments. But it's a sign that the game is doing nothing to bring in new players.

Tekken is delightfully deep, but gigantic movelists and learning the ins and outs of every facet of play can be a daunting task. It's easy for me to keep playing each time because I already know everything from the previous games, like @Esruck Cype said. It's more or less been the same basic underlying game since T3. But for new players to try and jump in and learning everything... it's an informational brick wall. There's just SO much to put together before you can have fun. Some of the characters, like Lei, Ling, Yoshi or Hwoarang, can literally take years to truly master.

I think TTT2 is THE best Tekken game that ever was. The balance, the gameplay, the juggles, the "meter without a meter" management. It's like the definitive Tekken, IMO, other than T5:DR. And yet, without any hesitation, I will tell my friends to not bother with it. Like you said, it takes so much time to learn Tekken if you come from another FG, especially a 2D FG. But it's also the fact that you will not be playing with anyone except online (which is thankfully wonderful for TTT2), it's not really worth the effort. And as a loooong-time Tekken, that hurts me inside.

And there are no real compelling competitive storylines anymore. No EC vs WC. No ATL is the King of the Nation. No US vs Korea vs Japan. New blood (and lots of it) brings in new storylines and rivalries. The Smugs. The SonicFoxes. The CDjrs. The Koji KOGs. The Apologymen. I'm not trying to see another 5 years of insanelee, JFJ, FightingGM, and whoever fight each other, then get destroyed in the finals by the two Koreans that came stateside.

But oh well. As a Tekken fan, I'll still play T7 (whenever it comes to console; thanks Namco for pulling this arcade-exclusivity shit again), but I really wish Harada DID take a chance on T7 the way they did on T4. If just for the gamble of having "that ol' Tekken magic" that the series used to have back in the T3/TTT days.
