What you think is the real reason of the variations?

All too easy...
I think there should be a way to hide what variation you're picking so no one knows what you're picking until the match starts.

Then, after that, if one of the players wants to try and counter-pick your variation, they don't know whether or not you're going to pick the same one again or another one that could possibly render your variation change useless.

The mind game possibilities are endless if they do that, ladies and gentlemen.
Man for this game only I'd love nothing more than to have character locks for each tournament. You sign up for the tourney and have to use that character the whole time, for each match though you get to hidden select your variation. I really hate more than anything in the FGC the counter pick mentality because it just shows YOU cannot beat your opponent but another character can, its just so.... lame, its just lame.

I think it's primarily for balancing, but it also allows them to have essentially 3 times as many characters as models, which is a pretty genius way to save time and resources.

I think it will end up like this :
Every character ( maybe with few exceptions) will have best variation which will be used by most players :)

I want to be wrong but its too good to be true that all 3 variations of each character will be good and viable

It ia possible this ends 7p blowig up in our faces and it ends up that there are really, really shitty MU regardless of variations. E.G. Kotal beats all Sub-zero's variations 7-3.

Call ME Crazy, but Ermac did have a pretty good rushdown thing going if you can get your opponent locked down in the corner. The wall combos I see ppl do on youtube are pretty badass, wish I can use them online but you know how laggy that can be. But I think you may ave answered the gist of what NRS is going for their characters.
Well, a lot of combos performed by Ermac (or any character for that matter) never saw the light of day in actual matches. Anyway you know what I'm trying to say.

This is not just something I think will happen but I also hope it happens because I believe every character should always retain a certain style of fighting. Variations should give them different options instead of altogether separate styles.

Play Monster Hunter!
It also helps a kind of stupid problem I saw mentioned a lot.
People not meshing well with characters they liked.

Like basically the entire world wanted to play Noob Saibot because of his trailer, but then when the game came out, they realized he played like fucking shit and quickly never touched him again.

Interactbles the main thing, the way the game looks and plays even the characters looks like the same style as Injustice. IMO it would hav ebeen better if they would have just kept the same graphics or upadated graphics from MK9 and kept it consistent so they can make another trilogy. If they wanted MK look and play like Injustice, they should have started that in the first game then make it into a trilogy keeping the consistent playstyle. but that is just me.
Interactables are a lot different in this game than Injustice. The MK series has also had interactables in the past, so it's technically not an Injustice only feature. The graphics of MK9 are very flat and the textures are horrible. Injustice improved on the graphics a lot and so will MKX. I don't see the problem with any of this.

I think what you are asking NRS to do is incredibly boring. I like the way they constantly innovate and hope they continue to do so. But, like you said, that is your opinion so I guess we just disagree.

I'm sure NRS is fully aware of this, but I think the variations system is great because MK is about story and characters more than most other fighting games. I'll elaborate what I mean.

In SF, people usually pick who they are good with. I mean, who would pick Rufus based on aesthetics (unless for hilarious or ironic reasons)? The answer is, people who find tier ranking or function more important than story and looks. Most of the competitive fighting game community shares that sentiment.

Now, with MKX the person who loves Sub-Zero as a character but hates playing defensively doesn't have to play a different character they don't give a shit about. If it's rush down you want go with Cryomancer. Want anti zoning? Go with Unbreakable.

Variations are perfect for MK because I know there are still a lot of people who like to main a character, not a tier ranking. A lot of us still main the character we picked up when we were 8 years old. Sometimes that character may have had shitty games, but like a football team (I hate football), you don't jump ship when they don't make it to the playoffs.

Yeah I get what you were saying, when they revealed how MKX was gonna play I thought they were gonna keep it consistent like MK9 though.

It can't be for balancing purposes.

I mean balancing 66 variations is a lot more work than balancing 22 characters. It's going to be a huge challenge -dare I say impossible to keep all the variations bug free and well balanced. Personally I'm convinced MKX is going to be a mess because I have zero faith that NRS can do it right lol. Yeah I'm not really the optimistic type.

It's going to be an interesting and fun game for sure but I wouldn't keep my hopes up in terms of having a quality product/balanced game. More power to NRS if they can prove me wrong.

Well, you may be right but I don't think it's gonna be all that awful. The 3 variations will definitely give a decent amount of dynamic to a character but it isn't by any means 3 separate characters. Between variations there are a few exclusive specials and some property differences in normals but that shouldn't be too hard to flatten out.

I'm no game designer so I don't know the exact degree of fuckness that comes with a gazillion character variations but I have faith (praise Boon).

I could see the buff characters like Kotal Kahn being a bitch to debug. I'd say Ferra-Torr would be a pain in the ass but from the videos I've seen, it looks pretty smooth. I can only imagine how many times Ferra got stuck in the border or the floor, twitching violently, when they started programming him/her.

My only hope is that this doesn't become a big chase-the-tail counterpicking fest of musical chairs. But typically in situations like this, not every variation is as good as the others; so people might just settle on something they like.

It's obvious - to add more to the game play. It might help balance tiers out tremendously. IE one variation of Scorpion could be top-tier, while another could be mid. It'll make match ups a son of a bitch though.

i Feel they added variations to help the character loyalists stay true. something tells me every character will have anti-zoning as well as zoning tools through out the variations. soo that leads me to think.... zoning scorpion!? i think so!

A Zoning Scorpion? I think he is pretty much a rush down since everytime he spears you he wants you to come over to him lol jk. But I think every character will have a mix of everything.

It's actually Freddy Marvel
Also I think he idea of variations is pretty simple, when you have a horrendous matchup all you have to do is use another variation instead of having to learn a completely different character and counter pick, variation counters will happen but it's still the same character so it won't be that different
