Who's you're main?

Just thought I would start a thread were people could talk about their main and alts and explain why and how they use them.

I'll start.
Sub-Zero was my first main and I used him for a very long time when I first got the game. I actually might still have my most games won total with him. But I was new to the game so there wasn't much strategy, but now I’m a little more rushdownish with him. Never really been one to stay behind my clone and lob ice balls. My strategy consists of Rushdown/Mix-up play. I like to get in your head (if I can) and play mind games and baiting.

Reptile came next and I liked him to. Again, never did to much zoning with him. Mostly dashing around the map like a mad man, countering anything and everything with elbow dash, and eventually get a 31% dmg off when I get the chance.

Then I had an experimental phase with Sektor (who I’m going to try again here soon) but he didn't stick.

Then came Raiden. I really enjoy playing as Raiden being that his over head starters and grab mix-up with his teleport worked great with me. I probably used him for the second longest time.

Then came another experimental phase with Ermac and Mileena but neither stuck.

Then came Cyber Sub-Zero, and I love it. I love his rush down capabilities and 34 slide/grab mix-up trap. And having a great low starter and high damage potential. He is my favorite now.

So feel free to share you're fighters and play style and maybe we can all help each other find new fighters we might like if played to our play style.

I play... Kabal, Quan Chi, Sektor, Reptile, Cyber Sub-Zero, Smoke, Ermac, Sub-zero... needless to say I have commitment issues. Maybe I should just play Shang Tsung.

Noob
Well I actually started playing MK9 about a month ago. Played in a tournament with a friend before even touching the game. Got a couple hours of practice under my skin.

I immediately chose Noob. For some reason I chose him. I've liked him since MK3. I actually won 1 match in the losers bracket and I was happy with just that. I really like zoning with Noob. Most people just like to block high with him but he has a Shadow Slide that throws people off. After the tourney, I ended up picking up MK9 and started here on TYM, got a lot better. Learned some really helpful tips with Noob but I still can't pull off the 100% reset, I can only get 70%.

Today I picked up Smoke, I played as him for a bit in the story and I'm really liking him too. He's much more combo based than Noob which makes him really different. I already memorized 7 combos in about 2 hours of practice mode and 1 thread here in TYM. Hopefully whenever I go to a next tourney I'll be able to try him out.

Funny, the first time I touched the game at my friend’s house I chose Noob.

Yea this is really a helpful site, coming from a heavy FPS background I was used to getting shit for being good. Now people complement me and say Good Game. Took me awhile to get used to but its definitely one of my favorite aspects of the game.

I've heard of Noobs reset but never seen it, and I've been playing for about a month and a half and I’m glued. It partners great with FPS because there totally different and I don’t get bored.

I still have room for improvement. I think I just need to play really high level players and observe as we fight to pick up some things. I just don’t get in many games with really high level players.

I main Ermac because he's tons of fun and his force push is one of my favorite moves in the game. I'm also maining Smoke right now because he's very fast and he can play great mind games, but will be dropping him soon after I work on Rain, Mileena, and Scorpion more.
Scorpion-Great mixups, very flashy, very fun
Rain-One of the coolest movesets and his playstyle fits me very well
Mileena-Tricky mixups, fun combos, fitting playstyle

I definitely have room for improvement also. I'm on the same boat as you with the background. Mainly a PC FPS player now but I love consoles just for MK now. If you can, go to tournaments. From the two I went to(just went to one yesterday, same place), everyone is friendly and will give you tips. Its a HUGE learning experience and you can do casuals with some really great players. I've met Osu 16 bit, AU_WannaDie, and Medina4life. 3 really amazing players.
Even if you don't win matches, you still learn a lot from it. Offline play is sooo much different from online play. If you go to a tourney and go home and play online, you'll see how bad it is.

I like to think I'm good.
I try and be different in my fighting games, and never really like getting a win unless I worked for it, so I main Jax. I also play Sektor and Shang Tsung.

I've been through the entire cast, and those three seem to fit the best, while KL, Raiden, and SZ I find...utterly boring.

I started off with Stryker and Ermac, they didn't work. I move to Smoke, and I liked him, considering I use characters based on their 'flow', and he was my main. They I set down MK9 once psn came back up, and came back once summer started, only to found out that not only did I forget smoke, but he was completely overused. So i switched to Liu Kang, but found myself failing w/ him, so then i found Jax, and he stuck.

Im not sure who to main anymore. For me in order

1. was sub-zero really liked him since MK1, but was mainly cause I thought he had the coolest fatality lol. Wasn't till MK Alliances that I started to get more serious with fighting games and used sub in a more skillful way. Even till this day I enjoy playing as sub-zero and eventually will prolly find myself main him again.

2. Reptile because before I bought MK9 I watched alot of tournament footage and loved how people used reptile. Also I wanted the change of pace from sub-zeros defense style fighting to more rush down.

3. Noob Saibot. The idea of noob intrigued me not just his bio, but his playstyle. It was so much different and odd then everyone else. I fell in love with the black hole.

4. Kabal has some of the best rushdown and great zoning. Had a tool for everything. Ive always thought that performing his dash cancels strings to be the most challenging and rewarding thing to do in the game so I picked him up. I still use kabal when I need to win hes the one im best with.

Ive also experimented with Sektor, Liu Kang, Raiden, Rain, Quan Chi, Cyber- Sub, Ermac, and Baraka to the point I almost called them mains.

Right now im focused on Johnny Cage and Scorpion. I like scorpions 50/50 mixup but find it a bit risky to do. Im thinking if im to play scorpion I want to use his safe strings and capitalize on mistakes with big combos while keeping my opponent nervous of hell fire.

To me Johnny Cage has the best rushdown in the game. At least when hes able to get in. I use to hate Johnnys cocky attitude and when I was younger During MK1/MK2 all i wanted to do was use the ninjas lol. So now im thinking its about time I give Johnny his dues and use him. My only problem with him is that hes 1 dimensioned. Get in Rushdown with frame traps, d+1 pokes, and nut punch resets.

Not sure what I will do. Maybe try Smoke he has alot of good tools, but for now my main still kabal.

If you play as Noob, you must know that he's a zoning character. He doesn't have one move with armor and he doesn't really have a "Get me out of the corner" move. Kabal is a way better zoner than Noob imo and I main Noob. Noob does have a pretty nasty reset but it can be useless against people who can use wakeups to their advantage.

Well I play a lot of characters. During the demo phase, I kept switching between Sub Zero and Scorpion. Eventually I stayed on Sub Zero. When the game came out, I played around and I liked Liu Kang. I played him for a while, liking his mixup/rushdown play style. I think I might have the most played games with him. Eventually I started using different casts members like Shang Tsung, Sektor, Noob Saibot, and Kitana.

I watched some tournaments like PDP and Revelations. Ermac, Smoke, Raiden, Kung Lao, Reptile, seemed to be really popular, so I stayed away from them, since I like being original. Didn't really like following a crowd. So after awhile, I picked up Smoke to play against my cousin, who was a notch below me in skill level (hes the only offline play I got after demo). He seriously hated that because he said Smokes the cheapest character in the game with his stupid teleport punch etc.

Eventually, just to piss him off, I started using Raiden and Ermac. Initially, both were just minor characters to me, but then I started taking a liking to both, Raiden more so than Ermac. Raiden then became my main and became my best character. I usually just picked him if I wanted to play for real and to win, but I dont usually get in that mode online. Recently, I saw a great Reptile online one day and he raped me. I decided to try him out in training mode, and after that, I decided to get good with him too. Currently playing him exclusively (unless I get into the 'play to win mode').

This is the most used in order:

Liu Kang
Sub Zero
Raiden
Ermac
Mileena
Sektor
Smoke
Reptile

Disagree. Any of his clones is his 'GTFO ME'.

Picked up the game release night at midnight, Played around with different characters, liked sub zero and liu kang, may comes around, start playing kabal shang tsung, june comes around, start playing quan chi and johnny cage, july, getting good with cage, go to first tourney and do well considering my layout was changed from my custom to default, august, getting really good with cage, drop everyone else, pick up nightwolf, learn a fairly easy bnb, use at casuals before 8/10 tourney at galloping ghost arcade with kaysick, decide i'm not comfortable using him, place 11th after losing to a reptile with cage.

sorry for the bad grammar, i really just don't feel like using it today.

so basically, i've mained cage since july-ish and i'm still learning a lot about how to play, doing less unsafe shadow kicks, etc etc.

Noob is a mind game pro. That is why I like him. Between direct blackholes, infront blackholes, and EX blackholes combined with shadows he can wreck someones world. He deserves his own title instead of "zoner". To me the most important thing with noob is controlling the match make your opponent move the way you want. Stay in there head. I agree with Kabal being a better zoner instant air fireballs dominate everything lol

Not trying to be a douche, but its hard to get out of a frame trap from Cage or from a Kung Lao when he's up in Noob's business. If he had a move with armor, it'd be another story.

I know you said last night that he had no armor and here and etc etc, doesn't he have it on EX-Upknee?

I thought I remember being hit by that sometimes and not connecting a hit.

Mileena

Shes the only female character that gets shit done instead of humping liu kang's leg so he can solve all her problems

Shes badass and unstable as fuck

She gives me a stiffy

Thats pretty much it.

Scorpion ... I don't know why, but when I first played as him I decided he would be my main. He reminds me a lot of Order Sol and Ky Kiske from Guilty Gear, so picking him up felt pretty natural. I'm still getting used to to mix-up options, but overall I like his chaotic playstyle.

Just a mark
1. When I first played the game, trying out all the characters, I took a special liking to Smoke. I was able to utilized Shake and do this 3, d1, 2 juggles well and set myself apart from my friends early on. This continued til a few weeks before CEO.

2. I knew I'd want to try someone new, and back when I was trying out new characters, I figured out that I could link f4, 4 into Teleport Uppercut, then jk to TU with Sektor, so I wanted to take him to the next level. I trained with him and used him and Smoke at CEO. Still, I got bomb trapped and outplayed. Not Sektor or Smoke's fault. My own.

3. Since I know he's not tourney viable, and that I wouldn't be playing any tournies any time soon, I figured I could learn Kratos. Blah blah sucks blah, I still tried him out. I figured a few things out and looked up combos. Kratos deals great damage and is a fun alt against friends.

4. A few weeks before EVO, I wanted to switch things up by learning a new character. I made a point to make this characters a female, to switch things up, and since I went to great lengths (sorta) to get her Costume 3, Mileena was a no brainer. Then I saw REO playing her, which was cool to watch. Though, her damage output wasn't what I was expecting, and her combos wasn't like the previous guys, which is okay. I liked her overhead starters that had good range and combos which, though mostly copy/paste, still effective. Her b,f 2 stopped wakeups just like Sektor's flames.

I also considered Jax, since his X-Ray is a grab (which I like), and I had success with him as a newbie, and randomly beat my friend's Lao with him as well.

I also tried not to main the same character as my friends:
Lao/Kang/Nightwolf
Ermac/Stryker
Noob/Scorpion

Mains:
Mileena - I just love to play her, great character.
Raiden - He has a hat and a godlike (haha) teleport.

Others I play:
Subby - It's fun to pull him out of my pocket but I can't really play him for more than 5 matches in a row.
Johnny - He is 100% fun and a cute 41% corner combo is something my opponents love to see. They like it so much that they let me do it 3 times a match sometimes :D .
Scorpion - Only when I want to be original.

I've never thought I'd see Scorpion compared to Ky :D .

Mostly because of his anti-air game: Sindel is more like Ky in terms of zoning. I would actually say Axl Low instead if Scorpion could aim his spear at different angles.
