What's new

Any Guitarists on TYM?

I can teach u every note on the guitar every string and fret in 3 mins

That's a great start

Then there's exercises I would ask u to do to be able to look at the guitar and see notes and patterns vs strings and frets

Then scales

Then understanding what forms a scale and what makes a chord

Then comes keys and modes

Its all is a progressive process but starting w knowing notes is great and makes things much easier
Too bad I do not live in ATL. Lol, I meant like coordinating, I am super slow at strumming and knowing which string to hold down and which fret, is where, especially if the music requires to move fast, I mis judge which strings to strum and how far the frets are, etc etc. I looked up a guitar class it's 8 weeks long for like 150, but some people tell me just buy a cheap guitar and learn tabs or w/e.

I play piano, bass, and a very shitty guitar, though I enjoy playing. I also compose electronic music. I'm always down to talk shop. How long have you been playing, @Zoidberg747 ?

@AK Pig Of The Hut are your chops still up right now? Seeing your old vids makes me want to practice more haha. The past year, life has been really busy and I haven't been playing much... now I suddenly feel like I need to be putting in time again each day.
My chops were probably at their best around 2010-2012 but since then I've rarely practiced or assigned tasks/work for myself

I took a massive departure since then and only fill in as a guitarist w corporate party bands or session work on need basis now

Still do some writing though

2005-2012 was about 60-89 shows a year

I know nubcakes is very active in music right now as well also under the mayo

Am I remembering correct u are in medical school?
Nah I am still in high school, after that going into pre-law then law.

Ive played off and on for 6 or so years but only really started getting into it 3-4 months ago

Nope, but my friend is willing to sell me his electric for a 100, everyone tells me to go electric since the strings are easier on the fingers, and it can sound like an Acoustic, but I was thinking of going Acoustic as my first guitar experience just because I am more of a solo artist type person in music when it comes to guitar, I do enjoy bands though. My only guitar experience I've had was randomly my friend teaching me how to play on this weird game called Rocksmith, shit was confusing, too many fruity colors, Lol.

I am just waiting to decide what I actually want to do with it before I purchase, but, I want a new hobby and am picking up an instrument, only music experience I've had was playing Alto Sax in Highschool. I've also heard there's electric guitars now with built in amps, so I can take them around and practice without hassle, been looking into them too.

Sorry this is a bit long, glad this thread was created though, Lol.

And a weird note, I feel more natural and comfortable playing with just fingers, when I use a pick, I feel like I'm not in touch with the guitar, I guess since you get no feedback to your brain because you're not actually touching the strings. But, I know pick is necessary.

Get a metronome, set it to 80 and do these:

Keep speeding it up over time. It is tedious and it takes a while but it will help you tremendously with strumming and hand coordination

Ya I have hope, lol, I just need practice. If I can type without looking on a small keyboard on a PC, I know it's possible to be well coordinated on a guitar.
That's the thing, you just have to keep doing it. It becomes super frustrating when you know what your hands are supposed to do and you can't, but eventually it will fall into place.

Another thing I have been doing is using a different tuning everyday instead of standard. It gives the exercises a slightly different sound and makes them feel less repetitive. Plus you expand your musical horizons in the process.

I've been really active on drums lately, setting goals for myself and practicing on a regimen. If anyone around the Hudson Valley NY area ever wants to jam (even if you're passing through for a tournament) let me know!

I have a Carvin california carved too, Carvin flying V, annnndd a Blackmachine 8 string for dem Meshuggah riffs.

I use a simple Carvin half stacjbecause I just play at home. Loud as fuck anyway.

I HIGHLY reccomend Carvin. Custom USA made guitars that are priced amazingly well and blow Gibson, Jackson, Ibanez, etc out of the water. Plus they use the original locking floys rose and not some shit knock off.

Check em out fools.

Cold day in hell...
I still play sometimes but I'm nowhere near as good as I was in 2009 or so. Not that I was ever what I would call great. I spent way too much time learning from tab and such and never really learning the theory behind it and things like that. I keep saying I'll pick it back up big time but I don't.

I mean, theory is great and all but it definitely isnt necessary to be great. There are some amazing guitarist you know surprisingly little about the theory behind it.

i suck at writing :( , any tip?
What type of music are you trying to write? A lot of times you can use the different modes of the scale to get a certain feel, this site explains it pretty well:

Spectrum of modes based on how they sound
LYDIAN IONIAN MIXOLYDIAN DORIAN AEOLIAN PHRYGIAN LOCRIAN
brightest ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- darkest
  • LYDIAN very bright, upbeat. Good for anything very bright and upbeat such as pop, kids music, etc
  • IONIAN very sweet, happy, bright. Perfect for happy songs, love songs, etc. Used for almost all childrens music
  • MIXOLYDIAN middle of the road bright scale. Good for light rock, pop, country, etc
  • DORIAN perfect middle ground. Not too bright, not to dark. Good for country, rock, blues.
  • AEOLIAN gritty, bluesy, warm sounding rock scale. This is the standard rock and blues scale.
  • PHRYGIAN dark, classical metal sound. A Randy Rhoads favorite.
  • LOCRIAN very dark, dissident, brooding. Good for heavy metal, dark classical, etc

While that's true if I ever really pick it back up that's priority one for me to learn more theory and be able to fully understand what I'm doing and why.

That is a good attitude to have.

You also dont have to go to in depth with it depending on your goals, a lot of guitarists write by ear with the occasional theory mixed in.

My brother is really into Malcolm Gladwell and read his books. I remember talking to him about this stuff. Seems very logical and makes sense.

I play guitar but I haven't dedicated as much time as I should have. I don't like strumming chords for a while (don't like the repetition) so I tend to play either songs like THIS or Classical Guitar songs. Though my favorite songs are Metal and Classical, I hate retuning my guitar for all the weird Metal tunings.

Ive been getting more into playing over the past few months and dont get to discuss it with many people, so I thought here might be a good place to start.

Feel free to talk about anything, your music, your idols, tunings, theory, etc.

Edit: I guess I'll start off with a question:

What is your favorite tuning and why?
My favorite tuning is E A D G A D. Makes writing in E minor an absolute dream.
