This statement really invalidates the entire rest of your post. Everyone already hows how to fight this cruel unfair marketing but no one will and WB knows it. Until people take actual legitimate action all this "outrage" is completely irrelevant.
That I agree with. They know they can pull it because people like us on TYM make up 1% of their revenue, and will buy the game regardless, so they do it. In the end they see it as "we'll sell a Bazilion copies by throwing out some commercials with Liu Kang, Sonya, SubZero, and Scorpion two weeks in advance" so marketing to "us" is at the tail end of the table. Our opinions on what they should or shouldn't do are irrelevant at the end of the day. They'll do what they think will make them the most money.

I get it, you get it, but it's still bs lol. I just don't think a lot of other people can see anything other than "how dare anyone even have the audacity to desire anything be done differently whatsoever". Nothing wrong with differing opinions or discussion, especially on a topic like this one.

Get staffed bro
MK aside, I don't pre-order games anymore, mainly from the disappointment of BF4 and Destiny. There have been a bunch of games that I would have usually pr-ordered and didn't such as Drive Club, Evil Within and most recently the Order, none of which I bought due to initial poor reviews.

Voting with your wallet is the only way, it just takes a lot of people to make a difference. Trouble is most people don't learn and will happily prop up these shady practices just to get a skin or XP boost.

Its not about the money, its a proven marketing system that works. A year of teasing is a year of "hype". A year that every time MKX speaks, the entire internet world listens and every carrot dangled is eaten faster than the one before. Is there money to be made here? Yes, but this is just garnish. The pay off is that Capcom's Charlie trailer is barely a blip on the radar, but in two days 40k eyes will be on a stream where NRS is showing next to nothing new.

We have only ourselves to blame for this.

I agree with pretty much everything you said.

The only thing I want to highlight is that sometimes it's easy to forget that the few members of TYM who follow the game daily prior to release are the vast majority of sales. That's why they can do it the way they do. If every person who frequents this site chose not to buy the game they wouldn't even notice.

They market to Johnny Casual 500,000. Not to TYM 500. I wouldn't be surprised if they withheld almost everything until the last week of March and then dropped a bomb of info and advertising. For us that follow non stop it sucks, a lot actually, but there isn't much we can do. I still remember when Capcom was charging all that money for custom costumes in SF4. From someone who came from Tekken's scene and had free unlockable customizable clothes for ANY character I thought it was madness. Me not buying any costumes didn't even make a dent in their wallet.

The only realistic option would be to stop following everything and then catch up the last week before release. Or just deal with it. Like you said it is an irreversible successful marketing strategy that is too big to be changed at this point.

I understand people's point of view who are frustrated, hell I'm frustrated, but we all have to understand how it works in 2015.

@SaltShaker Well here's the thing, and its really the only part of this situation that matters. Do you really think if NRS said fuck it, here's answers to all your questions, that the assholes trolling up these threads would just stop posting and vanish?

Haha not a chance. If anything threads and post might pop up saying, "NRS killed the hype by revealing everything too soon".

What a day. What a lovely day.
Back on the topic of this fantastic looking game:

I'm surprised more people aren't theory crafting what the gooey, red guy is supposed to be. Meat cameo? A fleshy, reconstructed Shao Kahn? Who knows....

After seeing Kahn's armor and hammer, I think there are good chances, but it could be also an attemp to revive Onaga, if you consider that the skull in Quan Chi's chest is from Onaga.

A lot of people think it's Onaga, I'm personally under the belief that it's just his armor design lol

But it bring him a kind of power, you could see it when he wins a match, and by the size of it you can tell it's not a human skull.

I did, on like the third page.
The Brotherhood of Shadows have Kahn's hammer and armour.
That thing in the middle looks like a failed Shao Kahn resurrection attempt.
We're going to get some weird version of Shao Kahn as the final boss

On the topic of shitty practices, I think whoever buys the Limited Edition or Kombat Passes is a chode. It's totally on you if you're such a fanboy to go along with these scumbaggy plans, not really surprised considering what site this , but do not get indignant when people rightfully make fun of you for it. You completely deserve it.

NRS: Hey, enthusiastic MK fans! Here's a gift for your loyalty and for preordering MK. The gift is called Goro.
Zephyrus: FUCK YOU NRS! HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GIVING ME A GIFT WITHOUT ME KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT IT! FUCK YOU I WON'T TAKE IT!
NRS: OK, looks like you don't want Goro. Sorry to bother you.
Zephyrus: FUCK YOU NRS I WANT GORO BUT I WANT YOU TO GIFT IT TO ME ON MY OWN TERMS!!!!

You have trailers of the game. If you like what you see so far, preorder. If you don't, wait until the game is released, check out what it has or hasn't, then decide if you want to buy or not.

NRS. DON'T. OWE. YOU. SHIT.
Pre-ordering for AAA games is usually stupid, and you should feel bad for doing it. People, ask yourself 3 important questions: "Why is there day 1 dlc?" or "Why couldn't Goro just come with the game, for free, with no strings attached?" or "Has DLC gone from true expansions that were thought of after the game was released to publishers ripping out content to sell back to us?"

aj1701

Noob
Also I've been an MK fan for a very long time, but I'm still not preordering because I simply cannot support WB/NRS's business strategy with MKX. There's something very shitty about releasing info about 4 characters, then offering a day1 DLC (a full character! Almost competely unheard of even in this day of shitting marketing gimmicks) for preorders without 1) even showing you what the DLC is (no goro gameplay at all, no indication of whether online will be nothing but goro/boss mirrors, etc.) and 2) without showing even a quarter of the roster yet. Then to jack up the prices of the DLC season one pass while trying to rename it to allow for more "post-season" content is just ridiculous.

There are also ppl on this site and in twitch chats lobbying for goro to be allowed in tournaments day 1. If goro were a fun bonus then I'd have no problem with it, but to pressure tournament players to preorder out of fear is a really shitty tactic.

I have been a loyal Midway/NRS customer since MK1 in the arcade and should not be "thanked" for that by being bent over and fucked by marketing gimmicks.
So you were playing mk1 in the arcade at 5 or 6 years old? sure, ok. There's nothing wrong with their marketing strategy, goro is free with preorder, and you never know full details about any game prior to release. They are doing the same as any business, trying to charge as much as the market will bear. There's nothing wrong with that, and you do the same when you negotiate salary with your employer.

If you think its too much just don't buy it. if enough people agree they will change things. But please for the love of god STFU about this stuff already (goes for anyone bitching about reveals, dlc or marketing for mkx).

Go ahead and name one benefit to consumers pre-ordering that isn't some "bonus" skin/character bs.

Nothing wrong with their marketing? You obviously haven't seen their collector's edition, breh. That would be $180.00 for a sub par statue you can get on clearance in 6 months and a golden scorpion skin. If they were smart, they'd offer two editions: Scorpion or Sub-Zero. But no, instead we get this single, overpriced chump Scorpion edition for a game that will be $20 or less by the end of the year. That won't stop people like some in this very thread from buying it, unfortunately.

So if people are this worked up about Goro, how does everyone feel about Evolve's DLC practices?

Guy says statue is cheap without actually handling it.
Guy forgets the special edition also gets you extra skins, access to the dlc characters, art book, etc.

Also, that edition is optional. For the people that want it. Don't want it, don't buy it. The advantage of pre-ordering is this:

Say you don't have sixty bucks on hand for the standard version of the game. All right. If you have five bucks, you can pre-order the game. Now, you can put money down on the game as often as you like, until it is paid off. So instead of spending your sixty at one time, you can budget and spend twenty or ten every so often until release date. In fact, if you pre-order the game now, and drop ten bucks a week on it, you would have it paid off before the release date.

Pre-ordering allows people who work within a budget to get games easier.

Yes, I kept up with some of the news, it's not exactly my favorite model.
I would say that, by comparison, getting Goro if you pre-order without knowing what he does(Even though he will be revealed at a later date) isn't nearly as bad.

Shark Tank

I don't actually play these games

Well, definitely not compared to Evolve which was announcing DLC before they showed screenshots.

But then again I'm a goro sucker so...
