How much would "One More Patch" mean?

EMPEROR_THEO

I only use characters with wakeup scoops.
On the surface, it seems like one more patch would bridge the gap between the extremely competitive players who are playing to win (no pun intended) and players who have grown weary of the game because their favorite characters get destroyed by the god tiers.

What if the NRS developers announced tomorrow morning with a message as follows:

Injustice Gods Among Us: Patch 1.0whatever

MMH
(whatever nerf to teleport)
(whatever nerf to orbs)
(whatever nerf to forcepush)
(etc.)

Aquaman
(whatever nerf to anything fish and chips related)
(whatever nerf to his trait)

Batgirl
(whatever nerf to corner damage)
(whatever nerf to anything vortex related)

*insert nerfs to Bane here that would give 16bit a cry of joy*

*insert nerfs to Zod here that would make M2Dave call for 16bit's job*

*insert buffs to shitters here*

*insert walkspeed buff here*

-Would this bring Injustice back to 128 man brackets?
-Would the other side of the NRS community rise and support Injustice in a positive light, because NRS would (hypothetically) show us that they "support their games past a year?"

Keep in mind, I have no insider information. I am not using my psychic powers to predict this crazy request from NRS. I'm just a regular dude who wants to spark conversation.

Most of all, could this hypothetical, fantasy dream of a patch bridge the gap of us "not being able to play two games at the same time?" Upon MKX's release, would this patch that should imbue a sigh of relief to players that dislike certain aspects of this game (walkspeed, Aquaman, etc.) keep us supporting Injustice?

TLDR: How much would we actually support Injustice if "One More Patch" ever happens? What would tourney numbers look like?

almost moderate success
I just believe this would lead to another patch. I believe if you nerf all the characters people are crying about then a new character to cry about would be born. Think of all the characters lurking around top 5 in this game. One more big nerf,(which would be being made completely on tournament results and not fundamental values of the game) would mean no answers to those characters in tournament that are currently making top 8. Outside of mmh, am, and bg. What are we bitching about?

You would think that the greatest detective in the world, would be top tier. guess not, fuck...

I cannot say with any certainty that one more patch would restore the game back to where it was. I can say this with certainty though: this cycle will *never* end so long as NRS is unable to patch the games past the 6 month mark and people had best get used to it.
It will happen again with MKX. Top tiers will inevitably emerge, people will lose faith, and the game will begin a slow decline into obsolescence until the next game (injustice 2 I hope) is released. The hardcore players/competitors will remain...but by and large people will start to disappear because they can't motivate themselves to support a "dead" game that doesn't have longterm support. This isn't just an NRS problem. Marvel 3 is going through what many believe to be its death spiral now because the players know that its problems will never be fixed because its dead in terms of support.

Maybe Ares would always win trades and have a better anti air...?

Maybe Joker would have better acceleration on his walkspeed and better forward dash...?

Maybe Cyborg won't be a one trick pony...?

Maybe Scorpion is a bit safer and less meter dependant...?

Maybe Green Arrow will fare better against characters that he cannot handle currently...?

Maybe Bane players will have to think in a match...?

Maybe Catwoman gets that one buff that makes her dangerous...?

Maybe Wonder Woman gets nerfed...?

Maybe Flash is a bit less braindead...?

Maybe Grundy can...you know, fuck it. I'm getting tired of saying this, but it's too much work this late into the game's life.

It's actually Freddy Marvel
also if MMH, trident rush, Babs and Zod were all nerfed there wouldnt be abother character to complain about or a new broken tier of characters because everyone else is fair lol

Retired June 2012. Unretired June 2013.
It wouldn't really help the game. I mean, it wouldn't hurt it either, obviously. But I think, as far as turnout is concerned, it'd remain more or less the same. The people who left did so cause, well, they didn't enjoy the game that much.

Not to turn this into an MK9 debate, but if THAT game was patched at the time Injustice was released, then there's a bigger chance people would have played both games.

I base this on nothing but my intuition.

remove martians teleport, small buffs to regular orb duration remove double hit back 3, slight buff to trait

remove mb trident rush from the game, slight buff to reg trident trident rush remove trait give him a new trait which has to do something with sea monsters

batgirl: delete, make a cool character instead, butt seriously

bane: he's fine, nerf his dash speed so he's only fast with certain venom buffs

zod: buff startup on air zod balls, heavily nerf recovery, inverse it so he can't instant air but can still use effectively, increase inbetween trait time or nerf backdash

scorpion: buff everything especially movement speed, and spear recovery, and all that, give teleport faster startup but MUCH longer duration frames so he can punish moves on reaction but its slow enough to react to and punish, not sure how to do this so it is a valid punisher but can be dealt with

So a few thoughts:

-This would def. be a promising start.

-People will say "but then the characters after MMH/Batgirl/Aqua will be OP". Factually though, that's not true. Even in the game's present state, no one is surprised when Catwoman ends up #2, Doomsday ends up #3, Lex Makes Top 8, etc. So I think the gap at the higher end would be fine. I highly doubt say, Zod or Batman would win every tournament.

Superman, Doomsday, Zod, Wonder Woman, Flash, Sinestro, Batman, Bane and whoever else seem to be fighting for their lives in Top 8 with no guarantees and that's great.

-Although you touched on it, the lower end of the cast could definitely use a carefully considered pick-me-up as well. I think that would make one of the biggest differences in the game balance overall. For example, when Bane was strengthened, all of a sudden there was another major threat in Top 8. If more characters were brought up to become threats, it would probably drastically change the landscape above just making Top 3-4 nerfs.

We're talking serious buffs though, and not "Shazam has one less frame of recovery on Torpedo .. go forth and prosper"

This mean you don't like me?
I think more people would play if one more substantial patch was brought forth. Remember how many people came back to injustice during the last major patch? The game felt different for a lot of people, and it was a refreshing experience. The thing is, match up tweaking patches (slight nerfs and buffs) will only satisfy those already playing the game/ potentially leaving due to dissatisfaction. To bring the game back to 128 man brackets it would, in my opinion, take a lot of shifts to the core mechanics of the game that may not be feasible(walk speed, anti air, consistency etc.). I know that when I do a combo in the corner, and my character ignores the opposing character completely and is all "fuck you corner, you let this happen" I threaten to never touch the game again. I already have old man reactions, so the inconsistent anti airs on some characters is very very offputting, 'specially now that I've been playing SSFIV. (Played too much Injustice that every other jump-in in that game, I expect to randomly cross up LOL). While some, like me, love the game a little too much to boycott it, I doubt we can regain lost players like previous patches did due to a)how far the game's life now is b) MKX

So unless the patch is substantial enough to make it feel fresh again, I doubt it would do anything other than please current players. And to be honest, who knows how a substantial change can actually effect the game, except for us theorycrafters and wishful thinkers? Have have unforseen consequences.
